I like watching Boise play. I don't however feel like they could play a competitive game against against Florida, Alabama, Texas, etc. Yeah, they beat Oklahoma, just like Utah beat Alabama but how long can you hang your hat on one upset game? I think the Broncos, along with TCU would have been more inclined to suffer a fate akin to Cinci, or what happened to Hawaii a few years back. Sure they might win but if they happened to get blown out collectively, it would have been devastating for the smaller conferences of College Football. I think by not letting these smaller schools suffer the chance of getting embarrassed all together in BCS games all in one season, the NCAA keeps the door open for these type of schools to keep getting invited back.

First of all, I don't think I saw anything that would prevent Boise from hanging w/ the likes of the teams you mentioned. They have speed and they had defensive poise, something Cinci and even most of the Big Ten bowl casualties of recent years have lacked (well, at least the speed part). Anyway, I don't want to get into a debate about that, as it's all 100% hypothetical anyway, so just throwing that out there.

But "leaving the door open" for smaller teams assumes the continuing of the Bowl System. That's the whole crux of the problem and the whole point FOR the playoff: There is ALWAYS the chance that a Boise State or Utah lurking in the playoffs could pull off the shocker upset win, just as there is during March Madness. It makes it far more exciting and at the end of the day, a deserving team will win the whole thing anyway.

Also, the "smaller conferences" would certainly have an easier time recruiting if there were a playoff. If I were Urban Meyer, I'd just sit there and say "Look, come play for me, we lose 1 early we might still be able to win it all, go to Boise State/Utah/TCU etc etc. you can go 14-0 and the best you can hope for is second best, why go there?" The playoff would ideally add so much parity to the system and if not, would at least add a huge element of excitement and surprise to the whole thing.

The bowl system is guaranteed for another six years at the least because of the TV contracts. I'm all for having a playoff but as it is now, for smaller conference schools to keep getting invited to the BCS, they need a good showing. Putting BSU against TCU was a winning situation for the NCAA where as if they had put them against teams that MIGHT have blown them out, people would be asking why these schools were ranked to begin with. College Football went with the more favorable odds of having a competitive game vs the 50/50 odds presented by the other scenarios. As much as Boise upsetting Oklahoma was great, an undefeated Hawaii team getting their asses handed to them by Georgia was not.

I'm on record as being anything BUT an Ohio State fan that lives in Ohio. With that said, I was glad for them after all the disappointments. I have to hand it to Tressel - I really thought after the Purdue game that the team would wilt and be done. They persevered and improved. That's good coaching, whatever you think of his overall conservative philosophy.

THAT was the biggest problem for Cincy last night, Florida, while VERY good is not THAT much better than Cincy. Shame Kelly did that to them.

TCU deserved UF.......players were begging for UF. They got hosed.

TCU should be careful what they ask for. If they thought BSU were bad they should see what would happen against Florida. It wouldnt be pretty. Possibly worse than the BEATDOWN Cinncinnati got.

I'll wait and see, we thought the same of Daryll Clark and he actually regressed a little this year despite being 1st team All Big 11 again.
I still don't trust Pryor in big spots but he seems to trust himself which is ALL the difference.

How bout Ohio State's DEFENSE, btw?????!

Man...they are good. REAL GOOD!

Next year...TOSU brings in perhaps the deepest, most talented stable of running backs I've seen in a long time...assuming Saine comes back (which I think he will). Couple this with Pryor's obvious development, a crop of good WR's, virtually our entire OL, and what is perhaps the nation's BEST defense and, like it or not, Ohio State could once again challenge for a National Championship! Assuming they don't screw it up along the way...of course.

Texas struggled mightily against Texas Tech, Oklahoma and shitty-ass Nebraska. Alabama is better than all 3 by a wide margin and Texas cannot beat them. I don't think the game will be all that close. Florida is head and shoulders better than Texas and Alabama whooped them pretty good.

I hope you are right. But aren't there several defensive guys that might flee to the NFL?

And I don't know.....I'm not totally convinced about Pryor yet. But we shall see.

Hmmm...what "problems" with leadership do you refer to? I don't see any. In fact, he is turning into a great team leader.

Watch where he goes. You'll see. He's going to be very VERY good.

I was across the alley at the Glendale Hilton for the lunch buffet. Alabama was filtering out of the lobby, leaving on their way to Pasadena, about a 15 minute drive to the RoseBowl. The weather is 75°, will drop down to around 65 at game time, I reckon. Perfect for football.

After talking with a few Alabama players the last day or so, I can see why the SEC is so good. I don't know how many of these guys could even pass a High School Proficiency Examination. When you've got that kind of Academic latitude when it comes to recruiting, you're pool of potential players gets a hell of a lot bigger.
