Life-Saving Songs

Postby rockinfayrose » Mon Jan 11, 2010 3:03 pm

What songs get you through the hard times? That's the question of this thread because everyone must know what song felt like a life-saver in their times of trials, heartache and turmoil. Personally, many, many songs at different points have been my source of solace during this journey of life, giving me strength and sanity whenever standing at the edge, but none standout more for me than Meat Loaf's "Rock & Roll Dreams Come Through" and "I'd Do Anything for Love" in the rough year of 1996.

So when life sucks, what's in your CD player??

anything i can turn UP and scream along with in the car.

Janet Jackson's "What About" is a good one for that. Angry firey passionate song.
The other day... "Never Walk Away". That's a great one for cranking up.

It's more about just screaming it out in the car just being by myself than it is about the actual song.

Yep, screaming along to a cranked up song to vent is very necessary sometimes to let out frustration. I often take the longer route walking home to do just that...passersby probably think I'm a freak but who cares

I'm more of a reticent type person. I like listening to simpler songs when I'm confused or lost about something.

Not surprisingly, Don't Stop Believing (someone had to be the first  ) always puts a smile on my face, especially when I hear it out of the blue on the radio. I like to listen to early to mid-80s Top Ten stuff from my youth when I want to just forget whatever I'm dealing with and remember being 12 or 13 with my whole life ahead of me, but I'll put on a CD and listen to the whole album like I did back then. Reckless is one of my favourites, but whatever I'm dealing with will impact what I want to listen to. Soundtracks from movies that came out during my teenage years or movies depicting those times are rather comforting too and sometimes I'll just play the movie in the background: Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, The Wedding Singer, etc.

Another Journey song in particular helps me put things in perspective, but less because of the song and more because of the story behind it: Only the Young. It reminds me that things will get better and perhaps not everything is so bad after all.

I just looked at my avatar and remembered Shania's song Up! - that's a good one too. It reminds me of her story and the loss of both of her parents at age 21 and the knowledge that for everything she has in the world, I wouldn't trade places with her - then I feel pretty blessed.

I don't know. If I'm depressed or going through something, I don't tend to listen to an uplifting song or an anthem type song. I listen to music that takes me even deeper into the feeling I'm experiencing, so for me melancholy-type songs or very sad or dark songs.

Beatles- Let It Be - fantastic recording from live sessions - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DIZtNdYhBU

Don't know about life-saving, but there are at least a couple of feel-good songs that come to mind that instantly put a smile on my face........Journey's Be Good To Yourself and Mr Big's Shine.

That one really did it for me a few years ago after some epic crap went down.
Now it's my alarm tone on my cell phone. Every day at 5:30 am, Steve starts yellin'...
I just figure it's a good message to wake up to. :D

hmm, a few for different reasons over years, but within the last couple it's been Duran Duran's "Ordinary World". The lyrics fit so much, from trying to find life again after incredible loss ripped away the one I knew; to even needing one certain friend, who instead turned away from my reach out. Makes you realize your true blessings though. I've just always liked the song too.

When I was going through a tough teenage break-up, I was all down and out. I heard the Kiss song "Reason To Live", and it picked up my spirits. Awesome, awesome song!
