Both songs are estrogen-filled, chest-thumping songs. Love the SP-sung recorded versions. Unfortunately, by the time he sung it live (ROR tour), his vocal range had diminished. Just doesn't sound like the record anymore.

It sounded live, but I couldn't tell with the mic so close and the timeframe.

Here's the only other live vocal from Steve Augeri I could find on OTY. Sounds good. Live audio from 2002.

Really don't like Deen's drumming, but SA is awesome in that track. Really crisp vocals.

LOVE DEENS DRUMMING!! He is the most animated person of journey until JSS came and went and now ARNEL.

Yes much agreed!!

Love "only the young" and "Ask the lonely. Both should be played on the radio much more than they are. Both of the songs have strong choruses and vocals.

I don't like that version at all or his tone on it. I don't believe OTY is one of his best songs. He excels more on Send Her My Love, Suzanne and WCTNGOF, After the Fall, and so on.

To me, I was just listening to the differences in his voice between when the two videos were shot.

Who played drums on "Only The Young."? There's no way that awful, processed 80's drumming is Steve Smith. Imagine how good that song would've sounded with real drums and not something that sounded like a Linn LM-1.

Hey Jeremey, always good to hear from you. I would say I like that version too 8)

So that there's no confusion, my earlier comment was referring more to listening to the differences between each video based on the footage and that they're about two years a part.

Good call LA!!! I could care less about that incident these days. Why is it SA is persecuted for this crap even this many years later but its become an acceptable practice these days for other acts (Britney Spears, Pussycat Dolls, etc) and people still sell out the concerts?

I could care less about the incident anymore and don't skewer Augeri on it nor the rest of the band. I find it funny, though, the ones that love to bash Neal/Jon/Management over it but now Augeri is a saint. Either blame them ALL or let it go. They ALL agreed to it and did what they thought they needed to do to get through that tour they committed to and it was a huge mistake, but doesn't take away from all the years that particular incarnation of Journey gave their all to their fans year after year touring.

They were all to blame and if it did go on beyond one tour then they should never be admitted into the R&R HOF. I know other artists lip sync but half of Journey's allure was the stellar vocal work done on the songs. To defraud fans there has top be a penalty if you're not going to reimburse them. I don't care about Britney or others who lipsync. Journey isn't out there doing dance routines or any type of theater. You are just paying to hear them sing and play their instruments. If they can't do something as simple as their job, they should suffer repercussions for it.

It doesn't matter. They will never be in the HOF for a multitude of reasons. I don't even think about that anymore as an option.
