Departure. I have never listened to Evolution the whole way through. Departure was a real classic piece of work.

I have changed my mind. I had picked Departure b/f but just barely, and said I like both Dep and Ev equally. Wrong. I tried listening to Evolution today and nothing spectacular. I hadn't listened to it in a long time. Some great songs, but on the whole some of Perry's vocals absolutely grated on me. I'm sounding like Saint John, but just didn't find his vocals pleasurable a lot of times. I could probably give away this CD and just download the songs I love on it. Too Late, Sweet and Simple and others. The ending with Daydream and Ladyluck made up for all the songs I didn't like getting there. And I've been a fan of most of Perry's early vocals, but just not all of them, b/c some rock songs were too high and piercing for me, and I really love the richness of his later vocals, Escape period on. But I have always really loved Departure with the bonus tracks, save a few songs that I skip if listening in the car.

After llistening to Evolution, I played Infinity. Perfection from beginning to end. What an album. That CD is amazing and I love love Perry's vocals on every single song and Neal rocked on guitar, the fantastic backing vocals in such great harmony, great duet with Rolie. Great songs. Winds of March with the great instrumental towards the end of drums, organ, guitar, magnificent, and then Perry's vocals back in. This isn't an Infinity thread, I know. But comparing it to Evolution, I see how inferior Evolution was on the whole for me, jmo.

I think Departure is easily the weakest of the first three Journey/Perry albums. Some amazing stuff, but also some serious filler along with some tracks who's studio versions pale to what they'd become live ("Line Of Fire" and "Where Were You," mostly). I think the high points might be more distinctive than Evolution, but Evolution is the more consistent LP.

Huh??? Oh my! Give it a listen to. Someday we need to convert St. John. Infinity, Evolution and Departure are among the top three favorites of all time.

Infinity, Departure, and Frontiers with the added bonus tracks are my top three favorites.
