Ok, Tell me more about Giant

I like that song Andrew's had on the front page. I know there are a few fans here, I've seen them mentioned.

Recommend me some stuff.

ok, they basically did 2 albums (Last of the Runaways and Time to Burn) before getting caught in the grunge scene and disbanding. Stylewise, they were melodic hard rock with vocals and guitars by Dann Huff. As many sessions as he has played on, you've probably heard him a lot. After Giant disbanded, he became a very in-demand country music producer. Out of the albums, both are very good. Time to Burn is generally regarded as being a little bit better.

the albums...Last of the Runaways

Stay (Acoustic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8smf2ZEwBA

after Time To Burn, Giant disbanded. About 2000, they dusted off some b-sides and unreleased songs to put together an album called III. No surprise, some good, a lot that you can see why it didn't make the original albums. There was also a Live and Acoustic cd released around the same time. Partly electric, partly acoustic.

That was it, until now. The new lineup has been heavily criticized for not being Giant.....basically no Dann Huff (with the exception of playing guitars on one or two tracks), and pretty much a totally different lineup. Current vocals are done by Terry Brock, who made his name in the band Strangeways. Brock is a very different singer than Dann Huff, but a very good one. If it tells you anything, he was apparently considered for Journey in 1986, and probably could have pulled it off very well in the 80s or 90s. The talent in the band is there, but so far, I've yet to be blown away by the samples. I'm holding out for the full album for a final decision. We'll see.

Thanks man. Much appreciated. I knew there was significant line-up turnover. I'm gonna follow up on your suggestions.

They were a great band, but he left out their best song! "I'll See You In My Dreams"...

I was trying to stay away from the pure ballads. It is a good one, of course.

I haven't been on CoD since our bender last Sunday night Jim, you been playin/gonna be playin? I might get on for a bit after 24 premiere tonight (I know you're watchin that!)

I'm pumped, I've purposely avoided all the teasers and any talk of plotline. I'm goin into this season blind.

Those were all great songs. I've only gotten through all of them once, but I liked "Innocent Days" the best so far. That's subject to change on more listens, of course. I'm gonna buy these albums 8)

I can't get enough of "Promised Land" on the front page though. Kickass song with a bit of a modern twist. Vocalist sounds quite like Kelly Hanssen.

I dunno. I thought Promised Land was average at best. Terry Brock is one of the best singers out there. I think Kelly Hansen (at least on his original material) is a bit higher pitched.

I'm just feelin Promised Land. Uplifting song, good message, nice vocals. I like the groove and the chorus harmony/guitar solos are very nice. Undoubtedly retro but with a twinge of modern flair, too.

I think it's the plodding chorus that gets me more than anything. AOR can be very good. It can also be the most lifeless stuff out there. Promised Land just sounds like they are trying too hard. Obviously, your mileage may vary.

I can see how one would feel that way about the chorus. I'm also a huge 70s power pop and 60s/70s "light-er" rock fan, so AOR songs like these appeal to that part of my music sensibility.

It almost turns into just another same-sounding AOR ballad, not unique, but there's something in this song that stops just short of that to where I enjoy it. I wouldn't call it a great song, but a really good song.
