Oh it does matter. Turner should lose his job for that ridiculously poor decision to go for an onside kick and I'll tell you why. The math dictated that for SD to get back to even, they had to force NY to punt. Had they kicked off deep, the Jets never would have gone for it 4th down on their side of the field. They kick off deep, hold them to 3 downs and NJ punts with a minute remaining. The onside kick makes zero sense. I doubt Kaeding would miss a 4th kick within realistic yardage. The game should have gone to OT. The Jets had nothing to really lose if they didn't make it on the SD 30. That was the right call by Ryan to try and win it right there and he did.
I didn't even really feel like it was as ballsy of a call for Ryan to make as the announcers were making it seem like with the way the Jets corners were playing.
Hindsight is certainly always 20/20. If that (great) onside kick gets tipped the right way and Chargers recover and score, it's a genius move. I liked the aggressiveness of the play. It just didn't happen to work.
But, Turner has probably run his course in SD. While I'm not familiar with all the stuff Turner does and doesn't do, a great example is using Tomlinson all game, which was like Mangini using Jamal Lewis all season long for the Browns. Simply a lost cause.
I just still can't get over how awful the field goal kicking has been the entire playoffs. I have seen so many missed, 30-40 yd, should-be routine kicks in these playoff games. Simply unacceptable for pros.
