Why would you want to be fired? Are things really that bad? The job market is tough as hell out there right now, so I'd seriously consider staying unless you have something else lined up. Just my $.02.

Uh, I'd start looking for another job. (a) The reason they don't want to fire is due to them not wanting to participate in unemployment compensation and know a person can't collect if they voluntarily quit. (b) You are a minority or protected class and they don't want to get sued.

Hey, I would make them pay you till they let you go. They are trying to be cheep. But you can look for a job just in case. You have time on your side because they don't want to pay workmans comp.

Hell no, I would never give in, especially if the boss is that much of a coward. In fact, if I had warning that someone wanted to "make me quit," I would go out of my way to be the 'perfect' employee. Even if I hated the job, I would be too ticked off to go out without a fight

I would start looking for another job so that when you do resign, you have something lined up. Steveo777 is right, it sounds like they want to make you quit so they don't have to compensate you. But, in the meantime I would use every advantage of the current situation, such as building a client base or contacts to network, creating and working on projects that will add to your experience and resume, etc. Just don't do anything that could get you fired 'with cause' which would usually allow them not to compensate you. Many on MR are lucky, because surfing the Internet at work for stuff that is not work-related - like MR! - is often defined as 'time theft' and is considered the same as if you stole office supplies.

If you quit you don't get compensation or if you get fired 'with cause' - getting caught for something like stealing would justify them in firing a person without compensation. If it's a personality clash or something, but they cannot actually fault your performance, they can let you go, but then they have to pay you.

I would look for something else as soon as possible - this is a very negative situation. If this boss wants you out, it's a guarantee that no matter how hard you work or what you contribute, you will not benefit with a raise or promotion. I don't know the specifics, but there are always tasks that no one wants and you'll get assigned every one of them. Why use your valuable time and skills to contribute to and benefit a company or individual who doesn't appreciate it? If your boss has a boss (or there is another manager at the same level as yours) who may not be aware of this and is able to act on your behalf and move you to a different department, asking for guidance and a resolution to the situation is something to consider if you like the company.

Yeah, well put. It's very easy for a person in authority to "constructively" fire someone by giving them all the worst tasks and making their life a general hell (think Bill Lumbergh telling people to come in on Saturday).
