Journey and Gospel

Going through the canon here, I'm hard pressed to find any Journey tune that has really had a strong potential for crossover into the R&B/gospel arena. I'm not talking blues here, just to be clear. Two examples from other groups would be Foreigner's I want to know what love is, and REO's I wish you were there. Does Journey have anything along those lines? Is it something to contemplate doing on their next release just to show some initiative outside the box?

Some have said "Knowing That You Love Me" has a strong Boys2Men R&B vibe.
If they write another song like that, fine, but I don't think this is musical territory the band needs to explore.
The margin of experimentation for Journey is very narrow.
Even the hard approach of Red 13 ticked off fans.

Isn't Arnel's claim to fame his ability to be a vocal chameleon? People say he sings with a lot of soul. Kevin Cronin isn't actually that type of singer but it's more to do with arrangements and having the choir in the back round and the whole package, not just the lead singer trying to sound like a brother.

I'm sure even Arnel would admit it would be a long stretch for him to do an R&B tune and make you believe it. I think R&B and I think of Luther Vandross when he was alive.

Sweet and Simple and Easy to Fall are my studio votes.
The intro to Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' from the ROR tour was pure gospel. I can almost see them wearing long red robes when I hear this version. All that was missing was the Harlem Gospel Choir.

Well, in my never-to-be-humble opinion, I'd say LTS has/had definite potential, especially when it's taken down a step. I also think "I'll Be Alright Without You", "Once You Love Somebody" and "Happy to Give" could easily make the leap to R&B.

I think "Sunshower's" harmonies are VERY gospel. So is "Easy to Fall" from TBF. Lyrically, they're not, but they have that gospel feel musically to me. "Easy to Fall" is one of the great unknown Journey tracks. Best song on TBF for my money. I also think "Sunshower" takes a lot of flack. It's certainly a better song than some others I could name.

I think "Sunshower's" harmonies are VERY gospel. So is "Easy to Fall" from TBF. Lyrically, they're not, but they have that gospel feel musically to me. I really like Like A Sunshower, love the updated but retro feel to the song. Easy to Fall really good, too.

Interesting that you said that about TBF. It's such a sad and depressing CD. It's very beautiful but sad. And I thought to myself there had to be songs on it that had a gospel flavor and there are a few; cept I can't seem to name one. Gospel songs are songs about overcoming; surviving and conquering. IMO, alot of TBF just seemed to be about surviving.
