I'm guessing it'll be the Great One lighting the cauldron - Terry Fox's dad ran this morning so maybe not likely his mom will be involved too. I hope it's Gretzky - that would be fitting, I think.

Gretzky was a product of no one EVER laying a body on him....had the talent, and the league allowed him to basically skate around UNTOUCHED, sorry....

There was an article in the Vancouver Sun saying Gretz would not be lighting the couldron, but that has since been retracted. Hmm.

I don't know Dean, I've said somewhat the same thing too. I love Gretzky and he definitely had the talent, but then he also had the Semenko's too. LOL, but then again this is coming from a Flamers fan, Oilers suck!

Same thing with Jagr....never got hit. League likes to protect their poster children. All leagues, in fact. Kobe, Lebron, Jordan...Gretzky, Jagr. List goes on....

I know Gretz had protection. Hell, everyone knows that. However, so did Mario and other great scorers. It's a smart thing to do. Gretzky had Marty McSorley and Dave Semenko. What, is the argument that Gretzky wouldn't have been the NHL points leader if not for protection? That's ridiculous. Just because that Oiler team was probably and arguably the best ever team in all of sports, shouldn't take away from Wayne's accomplishments. I hate Edmonton too, and the Flames as well, but how do slam a guy who single handidly saved hockey and at the same time, expanded it too? He is directly responsible for the Anaheim, Phoenix, San Jose, Florida, Tampa Bay and Nashville franchises being in existence today.

I'll tell you one thing....and I know you are gonna disagree, thus showing your limited hockey knowledge...

Cam Neely was JUST as talented as Wayne. If not for That BLATANT hip/knee check by Ulf Assholeson, he would have been legendary.

Ok dude, it's on.

I love Cam Neely, but to even suggest he was as talented as Wayne is absurd. You are showing your homerism now. Neely was great anyways, IMO. FWIW, I loved him as Seabass in Dumb and Dumber.

Unbelievable:

A luge athlete from the Republic of Georgia, Nodar Kumaritashvili, was killed in a crash during training on the Olympic track at the Whistler Sliding Center on Friday, Olympic officials confirmed. Olympic and luge officials immediately began an investigation of the cause on a track that some competitors have said is too fast. (more...)

I feel like shit. I posted a blog about the Olympics today and in it I made a joke that said "watching and waiting for them to flip over at 100mph. But not the USA guys..." Barely an hour later, I read this. Soooo sad. :( I think someone is telling me to stop it with my awful jokes. :(

He isn't favoured to win gold in any event. The South Koreans and the Canadian, Charles Hamelin, are all better than Ohno. Don't get your hopes up too much, especially don't expect anything at all in hockey for the USA. This is a two team tournament and the US isn't involved.

Just watching the Vancouver news - the young man who died was going something like 144 km/hr. They said it's possible the speeds on this track could even be faster, up to 155.

Well, thing is, it's actually not that common (so I heard in '06) for speed skaters to still be competing like this at Apolo's age (a very advanced 27  ) They're usually 18-22ish, I believe I heard. So I'm sure there are some real contenders that will give him quite a ru- er, skate for his money. I think he'll do alright though. :D

I wonder if they're going to use Journey's What It Takes To Win somewhere in the coverage. Fantastic song for the Olympics - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z88bOoFVFss

Very sad about the accident on the luge. It sounds like, from what I've read and watched on the news tonight, many in the luge community have been worried about this very thing happening since it's the fastest luge run in the world there. The speeds are unreal on this run.

Epic fail Olympics. This has completely tainted the Olympics in my opinion. They will obviously prentend like nothing has happend. Competators are now concerned for safety? geee that's not suprising! what a joke. Who is held accountable now?

Ridiculas.

Aussie warned luge would kill

AUSTRALIAN luge athlete Hannah Campbell-Pegg warned that Whistler's superfast luge course would kill somebody - and 24 hours later it happened.
Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, died after he slammed into a metal pole during his final training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre, sending shockwaves through the Games community.

His luge flew up the side of an ice wall, throwing him into an unpadded pole on the 1450m luge course, billed as the fastest on earth with speeds of up to 150 km/h.

The IOC and luge officials are investigating the crash, which could cause the entire event to be canceled.

Even before the crash, several luge athletes had warned the Vancouver course was unusually dangerous.

Sydney's Hannah Campbell-Pegg, 27, nearly lost control during a practise run on Thursday night.

"I think they are pushing it a little too much," she said.

"To what extent are we just little lemmings that they just throw down a track and we're crash-test dummies? I mean, this is our lives."

The luge crash was the second in two days and the German mastermind behind the track has admitted that safety modifications are needed following the tragedy,

"We now have to consider how we can alter the piste. At the exit area we could increase the height of the walls by some 40 to 50 centimeters,'' he told German sports daily Sport Bild.

Meanwhile, the Georgian team have announced they will stay in Vancouver, participate in the Olympic opening ceremony, and compete at the Games as a tribute to their fallen colleague.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said that "our first thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the athlete''.

Rogge is meeting with international team officials to decide whether the event should proceed.

An emotional Rogge said no decision had been made about the event's future.

"This is a time for sorrow, not a time to look for reasons. That will come with time."

Vancouver Organizing Committee chief executive John Furlong was shocked.

"Nodar Kumaritashvili came to Canada with hopes and dreams that this would be a magnificent occasion in his life," Furlong said.

"We are so heartbroken to be in this position. Our team has been devastated by this."
