Alec Baldwin taken to hospital after argument

Actor Alec Baldwin, star of 30 Rock, was examined in hospital on Thursday after his daughter called emergency services, a police spokesman has said.

Fourteen-year-old Ireland was "worried" that her father "might harm himself or take pills", according to the official, who did not wish to be named.

Baldwin, who is due to host the Oscars on 7 March, was discharged from the New York hospital after an hour.

His spokesman put the incident down to a "misunderstanding".

"This was a misunderstanding on one person's part," said Matthew Hiltzik in a statement.

"Alec was quickly released from the hospital, he's completely fine and is at work today."

The incident follows a history of family troubles for the 51-year-old actor.

In 2007, he made a televised apology to Ireland after calling her "a thoughtless little pig" on a voicemail message, which was later published online.

The actor's rant was apparently sparked by his repeated failure to reach his daughter by telephone.

The message said: "You don't have the brains or the decency as a human being... I don't give a damn that you're 12-years-old or 11-years-old or that you're a child or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass."

It followed a bitter, six-year custody dispute over Ireland with his ex-wife, actress Kim Basinger.

Baldwin's film career includes roles in acclaimed dramas such as Glengarry Glen Ross, The Cooler and The Aviator.

Last September, he won a second Emmy Award for his portrayal of egotistical TV executive Jack Donaghy in sitcom 30 Rock.

Last month, he and the show's creator Tina Fey won the Screen Actors Guild Award for best acting in a comedy series, and Baldwin picked up a Golden Globe Award for best actor in a TV series, comedy or musical.

He is a pompous little pig. No dad would ever treat their daughter the way he did and rightfully say they love them. Even if she never returned his calls. After the way he treated her you can see why she wouldn't. Don't take your divorce out on your kids. End of story.
