Yes you didn't hear? SMFP is back!!!lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pineda is busy singing a new duet version of "Ever Since The World Began"

Blech! Why does Journey allow this? I haven't found many people here in the states that look too favorably on what he's been doing. Not good representation of Journey, IMO. Maybe it doesn't bug others as much as it seems.

That's true. I would rather hear him with Journey and do away with the rest!

I suspect Journey has no control over AP and his management in the PI except for Journey music. I just don't watch the videos of all this duets etc, that way I don't get frustrated with what he is doing any more. He's entitled to a life away from Journey and I respect that, I just don't have to like it.

After back to back grueling tours he's earned the right to go home, relax and do what he loves to do ... sing. This is a great idea. Get him as much exposure and new fans as possible and enable Journey to do 2 or 3 nights next time they go to Manila. And he's keeping his voice in shape.

I hope they don't hurry the process. I guess since they are not touring in 2010, I'd lay odds that this next album won't be released until the end of the year. And Pineda is still in the Philippines, so, so much for his participation in this project, unless he's already written his part. It just seems odd to me that if you're gonna write, you'd want your lead singer on hand for the process.

Yes this done seem strange to me as well.....I guess we agree on something

They didn't need him for Revelation. If Neal and Jon are on the same page about what they're trying to create, do they really need a third writer who might not totally understand what they're going for here?

Aren't melodies and stuff played during the writing process and sung a bit too? It would seem they would want to try some stuff out on his vocals as they go.

On a normal pop album, yes. If this is a true concept album, Everything will have a flow and the vocals and melody will just adapt to the story being presented through the music. At least, Pink Floyd had done it that way, Roger bringing everything in and the rest of the band plugging into the storyline.
However they do it, it's quite exciting to see them break away from the same rock/ballad/mid tempo love song formula they have been connected to for so long.
(If they're really serious about this)

If I'm not mistaken, Arnel and Neal were writing while in the Philippines no?
Arnel mentioned he was in writing mood but I don't recall him actually saying he wrote with Jon or Neal yet. If I'm wrong here, I'm sure someone will point me in the direction of a link that can verify that AP said this occurred.

Maybe Chubby? I thought I remembered a photo and something about Neal and Arnel writing. Ive never been wrong before, but hey..always a first time.

I don't think they did. I think the pictures you're talking about were from the rehearsal for the Kathy Perry concert.

As far as I know, Arnel is scheduled to leave for the US in May.

He re-iterated that again at NAMM about not touring in 2010. It looks like they are going to knock the album out in April and then look at a way of getting it distributed. I don't recall Journey ever taking more than a month doing an album so I don't see them dicking around in the studio very long. Then I guess Neal will work on putting his solo box set together during the remaining months of the year.

This is an article from back in December. I recognize parts of this interview b/c he's said it in other interviews posted here in different threads, but I didn't think this had been posted, but I could be wrong.

"…But that didn’t stop the guitarist refusing Cowell permission to use Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ on the X-Factor. Come inside for an exclusive chat with Schon – and find out all about Journey’s plans for a new album.Interview: Peter MakowskiSo, Don’t Stop Believin’ is back in the charts.I know, man. It’s unreal. I just got back from London. I was over doing some interviews and the song kept climbing up the charts. Simon Cowell called our office; they wanted permission to redo the song for the X Factor show. We heard the version and we weren’t crazy about it.Don’t get me wrong, I think Simon is brilliant. When I watch him on American Idol I pretty much agree with everything he says. But in this particular case it was two different producers and I don’t see anything wrong with our original version. If it’s not busted, don’t fix it. The rest of the band felt like that too. We decided to say no.

Randy Jackson [judge on American Idol and former Journey bass player] came back at me and said: “Dawg! Come on!” I said: “Randy, it ain’t gonna happen. We’re going to stick to our guns.”

The song’s been in a lot of films and TV shows and as a result our audience has got a lot younger – where it’s got to the point that nowadays our audience starts at about six or seven years old!

It was noticeable at Download last year that you were pulling in a younger crowd.

It used to be cool to hate us and now it seems to be cool to like us. We toured all over the place with Marilyn Manson. It was kinda scary; we’re not exactly what you’d call heavy metal. I rearranged some of the songs and took some bits that I did with Sammy Hagar [in the band HSAS – Hagar, Schon, Aaronson, Shrieve] and just some stuff I thought the crowds would like – and it worked.

The Marilyn Manson audience was really funny. Our audience is mostly predominantly women and with Manson it was all guys. So I thought I was going to get pelted. I was ready to start ducking, but it went down really well.

Is there a new album on the way?

Yeah, I’ve already started writing and the band will be getting together on March 25 to start work on some new songs. Arnel [Pineda, vocals] has got some great ideas; he’s really good with melody and lyrics. We’re going to make a rocking record. I know I keep saying this every year but this is for real now. I’ve gotten everyone together and we’ve talked about it.

I had a long talk with Jonathan [Cain, keyboards] and I said: “We have all the AOR material that we need, we’ve got all the hits we need and we have to play that stuff forever. There’s no getting away from it. So I don’t see the point of repeating the same song with different chords.”

I’m going for a conceptual record because I really feel that we have the good musicality to pull it off, and I think that right now we have everybody’s attention. I mean, there’s no radio anymore. The days of writing songs that are three-and-a-half minutes long for radio are over.

I have an animal instinct with music. I see what people dig, while I’m playing it I feel it, then I go home with that feeling and think: “Now I know what I need to create.” I think definitely in Europe, if not in the States, that they’re ready for us to come with something on the artsy side. It’s got to up and down, it can’t stay on the ceiling all the time otherwise there’s no dynamics.

I think it’s going to be a very musical record and I have a cool thing to write about. But I don’t want to reveal too much because somebody will steal it. But it’s a one title, like most of our records are, and it’s a very deep subject – real stuff."

I especially liked this in the interview. It shows Neal is really tapping into his creativity and passion for music again.

THAT is why I listen to Journey and will listen to anything they put out that has Neal Schon playing on it. This is good stuff. I just hope he can follow through. I would LOVE to hear this album as he describes it in the interview.

This caught my eye big time. I think that's a hell of a comp coming from Neal and I can't wait to see what AP's contribution will be. :D
