Jay-Z said he turned down producer Quincy Jones' star-studded remake because he feels the song is a classic and should not have been remade.
Jones had teamed up with Lionel Richie, who recorded the original with the late Michael Jackson in 1985, and the duo invited the biggest names in the recording industry to take part in their efforts to raise funds for the victims of the Haitian earthquake.
The rapper said he was personally invited by Jones and while he is supportive of the cause, he decided to decline the offer because he deemed the song to be musically “untouchable” much like MJ's Thriller.
“We Are The World is like Thriller to me. I don't ever want to see it touched. I'm a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts and everything, but We Are The World is something that's untouchable,” he told MTV.com.
