Evan Bayh will not seek reelection

Sen. Evan Bayh will not run for re-election, a decision that will shock Democrats and Republicans alike in Indiana.

This is huge....

Pretty sad... I read the article.... he appears to be a man who has lost faith in Congress... and knows the difference between "public servant" and "politician"... he equally slams both parties for their unwillingness to do the right thing...

Hopefully some sheeple will see how impotent our Congress is.

Seemed to be a decent guy. I had originally predicted Obama would choose him as his running mate, which would've been smart politics and good policy ultimately. The choice of Bayh as V.P. would've given an insight into where his presidency would go (i.e., more moderate, more transformational). Once he chose Biden I assumed it'd be: push hard left, pay back all the Democrat special interests (i.e., union bosses) -- basically Washington business-as-usual.

Unfortunately Bayh allowed himself to get pushed into supporting the Obama agenda (especially the pork-ridden "stimulus" bill, and the Obama health care catastrophe), probably against his better judgement. He was definitely going to pay a price for that this autumn, and would definitely struggle with re-election this year.

For those keeping track: the likely GOP pick-ups this year now include: ND, AR, DE, NV, IN, CO, PA, and IL. That's 8 seats, which would bring the GOP to 49. Four other seats (NY special election, WI, CA, WA) could be in play with the right candidates. Barbara Boxer looks particularly vulnerable, polling under 50% right now. No GOP-held Senate seats look to swing toward the Democrats at this point.

Oh, and by the way: the GOP picked up exactly 8 seats in the Senate in 1994. So this year, at least in the U.S. Senate elections, it could be worse for the Democrats than 1994.

It's a tad presumptuous, given the populace's disdain for the GOP (they still have a lower national approval rating than the Democrats) and the fact that the elections that roused them from power were only 15 months ago. November is 9 months away, and I believe an economic upswing before then will offset the trending towards the right. However, if the unemployment rate is still hovering at 10% and the recession has worsened, then the electorate will respond in kind, and deservedly so. I don't see the GOP having a rational, planned out method for getting us out of this crisis, as they have become the party of "no" this year, but I would certainly welcome their input if things aren't any better this winter.

I actually made it clear that I thought the Democrats' winning the election and picking up a Super Majority in Congress could not have come at a worse time, since Dubbya's second recession had already kicked into full gear and many economists painted a bleak five-year forecast. If McCain had won and the Dems had, say, only 53 seats, people would be calling for the heads of the Republicans.

It's funny how virulent the anti-partianship has become, and even more puzzling that many people expect the party in power to fix deep-seeded problems in 12 months or less. This recession is a massive, daunting task and won't turn around for quite a while, IMHO. But Palin is a joke...no one takes her seriously outside the far right. Who is going to step up for the GOP? No-one stands out right now. The fact that not ONE Republican spoke out against the blatant racism at the Tea Party convention speaks volumes.

why is it racism? because our president is black? too easy to throw the racial card instead of actually debating. weak.

no doubt there is racism... but it crosses all bridges. it doesn't belong to any party.

i wouldn't say that is a majority.

anyone can show up to a tea party btw... even those larouche (sp?) people who i think most will agree are nuts... but they also did the same thing to bush. they come & stand outside my store... now AND when bush was in office. the difference is when bush was president no one complained about these posters... or people burning effigies.

i think YOU people don't like cowboys.

Dubbya was a moron, not a cowboy. Cowboys don't run for the National Guard thanks to Daddy's connections when war looms...funny how he showed no reluctance to declare war on Iraq when our only business should have been killing Bin Laden in Afghanistan. He is a Chicken Hawk of the worst variety.

I will tell you this: there has to be a reason the unemployment rate is 10 percent right now and we're $13 trillion in debt. I don't think Obama nor his Administration have the answers. I can completely understand the discontent out there right now...count me in as one of the doubters.

There's no more racism/bigotry in the Republican party or Tea Party than any other form of political party. It's just in different forms.

And, BTW...just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I think you're a moron. So put down the lead pipe and deal with this on an intellectual level, not like a ruffian.

I beg to differ. We are the party of spineless wimps who don't walk the walk.

Trust me. Had McCain been elected, we would still be at 10% unemployment. And the GOP would be down the shitter for good.

Here's 2...Jessie Jackson...Al Sharpton...as racist a pair as you will find anywhere...but because they are racists toward caucasians it's ok..

Remember Tawana Brawley??? White people did it to here were Sharpton comments...OR...how about calling Jews "diamond merchants", or this zinger from Sharpton White folks was in caves while we was building empires.... We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it.”, or hey, going afte Mitt Romney, "As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don't worry about that; that's a temporary situation."

And who can forget that little Hymie-town comment from Jessie Jackson?

Those are just 2 examples...I can give you more...but that should be enough.

I totally agree with you...but..... McCain doesn't represent the GOP. Neither did Bush. Both were/are RINOS that made very costly mistakes at the expense of their own party.

I actively campaigned AGAINST McCain for the very reasons mentioned. Had he won, he would have inherited this mess and he would have made the same inexperienced, repeat the new-deal mistakes the current buffoon in office is making.

Thankfully....I got my wish. Obama is president.

And guess what!! The congress that got us here, the democrat controlled congress since 2006, has been forced to take ownership because they now have a president with a D after his last name.

The end result is that Obama is doing the very thing to the Dems that you predicted McCain would do to the GOP.....and I predicted that.

I wanted the Dems to OWN this fucking thing. A democrat controlled congress now has to fess up for *it's* share of this economy...which is SUBSTANTIAL. The current president has to explain why unemployment went from 8 to 10 ON HIS FUCKING WATCH. He has to explain why actual unemployment is estimated as high as 17% on HIS FUCKING WATCH.

The more he blames bush for his failures, the deeper the crater that will result from Dems imploding in November.

I've got my popcorn ready! This is going to be sweeter than watching Al Gore get his nobel peace prize taken from him....

on the racist thing....

...why is it that the democrat party actively recruits minorities for their voter base?

yet democrat policies do nothing to propel such minorities out of their poor tax brackets?

why is it that the Democrat National Party RARELY promotes minorities in political leadership.

Yet the Republican Party has a black national chairman....and the last republican president had a VERY diverse cabinet including a black, woman national security advisor/COS.

Seriously......Democrats are the racist fucks.

A calculated, cynical, choice that was made in response to Obama's win.
I guess affirmative action mouthpieces are OK, just as long as they're playing on your team, right?

You just got finished saying that W. in no way represented real GOP values - now you're citing his U.N. rainbow cabinet as proof of the GOP big tent.
Would a little intellectual consistency be too much to ask?

George W. Bush, by the way, was the most right wing conservative president in 100 years - and his record nearly matches Reagan, the patron saint of modern Conservative Wingnuttery, to a fucking T.

To be fair to W, he wasn't really the guy pulling the strings, right? I would say that was a Cheney Administration. I honestly don't think Bush really knows much about anything, let alone political ideology, and where exactly to steer the ship.

Are you seriously saying that there are not TONS of, for instance, anti-religion bigots in the Democratic party? That's not to mention folks like Robert "KKK" Byrd who's still apparently fond of using the N-word.

I would tread cautiously in classifying someone who attempts to build a bridge between church and politics as being "anti-religious". It certainly does not compare to the millions of racially charged blog posts and psychopathic assholes carrying the aforementioned signs at political rallies.
