Uhhhhh... They're not the only coverband there. At least Foreigner's producing new tunes, and their singer SOUNDS a lot like Gramm. Styx's choice of Gowan who sounds NOTHING like Dennis leaves a huge whole in that band. I know that they have a couple more original members than Foreigner, but when those original members consist of JY (most worthless addition any band has had) and Chuckie who sits his ugly ass in for a song or two (what the fucks up with that? You're either in or you're out dude! ).

Sorry... two cents worth. Kansas still rocks too! :D

  I know a lot of people still support them (and that's fine!), but I don't get calling Foreigner a tribute band and leaving Styx out of that sentence. Just saying!

They both have produced one album of new material. Styx's new material with Gowan owned Foreigner's output with Kelly thus far, but it's been what, 7, 8, 9 years now since that damn album? I didn't care for Can't Slow Down much besides a few GREAT songs. I really like Kelly, don't get me wrong, but to me, the footing is about equal, if not in favor of Styx because they still have Tommy and Cyclorama was a strong post-Dennis album. Don't get me wrong about my love for Dennis either, cause he's great as well.

As a keyboard player, your dislike of Gowan surprises me. The guy is twice the player that Dennis is. Dennis is a great singer, but Gowan's doing an admirable job as a replacement and he's certainly a much more gifted musician playing-wise. Regarding JY, his harmony voice has a LOT to do with the Styx harmony sound. His lead voice blows though. The reason Chuck's not there full time is that he's got Aids and he's not physically up to doing entire shows. I LIKE Dennis, but the guy put that band through a lot of crap and I can totally see why they'd move on without him. He was a pain in the ass to work with.

I don't dislike Gowan's playing at all. Just don't like his vocals. To me, JY could be replaced by ANYONE who can even do a mediocre job on guitars and they'd sound better. Backing vocals are easily replaceable. I don't think he brings anything worth-while to the table. His guitar playing sucks ass! :?

Hear me out... I've seen Styx a couple of times without Dennis, and they put on a pretty good show. I'm not saying I HATE Styx, but they are (in my mind anyways) just as much of a tribute as Foreigner. I think Foreigner's got a much stronger line-up too.

Matt... I agree that they both have decent albums, but Foreigner's was much more recent, and I don't think they're sitting idle. I think we'll here more from them sooner than we will from the Tommy Shaw show.

I can definitely see Foreigner doing something more before Styx.

As for JY's guitar playing... while I doubt he'll make many top 10 player lists, he doesn't "suck" by any stretch of the imagination. Just listen to that opening lick of the Renegade solo... that's crazy stuff. I still can never quite figure out what he's doing there. He's a good riffer too. He's more of a classic rock player than a melodic rock, soaring "vocal" style player like many others from this genre.

Why would he play it live if Tommy played it on the record? It's certainly not John Curulewski... or however the hell his name was spelled.

I was just fucking with you Matt! I will give you this one though... It's not too shabby. It's not earth-shattering either, but not bad. I just think he's way-over rated. They're a tribute band. SAY IT NOW!

Don't fuckin lie Sergeant Synthesizer, you didn't know it was him. I don't see how he's overrated... hardly any one talks about the guy. He's not anywhere near the list of my favorite or influential guitar players, but he's been an integral part of the band's sound, like it or not dickwad!

Come on jim   seriously though styx is as close to it's original line up as any other band from that era (when chuck is up there with them) that's why i don't consider them a cover band. Foreigner is a different story. Also i do agree that JY was/is replaceable but no one has/had the balls to do it.

Renegade solo is definitely JY. Always was. The Styx shows without Dennis are much more 'rocking' shows.
I prefer them without him. If Dennis still wrote rock songs, I'd feel differently. Gowan and Dennis bring their own things to the band.

I prefer them without him. If Dennis still wrote rock songs, I'd feel differently. Gowan and Dennis bring their own things to the band.

Er, you might want to check out his latest CD. You'll be blown away. Takes you right back to the Equinox/Crystal Ball/Grand Illusion eras.

seen foreigner and styx together about 5 times in the last 5 years, and although i cant sit and watch either when they play ampitheatres, i think foreigner sounds great with the new singer

Curious why can't you sit and watch them play amphitheaters? Neither one is a draw anymore, is that what you are saying?

They'd better announce that date quick, and make sure it's not on the same day as Iron Maiden or Tom Petty!!!
