Neal Schon doing the music of Neal Schon, NOT Hard Line, Soul Sirkus or that kind of stuff.
Neal had a Grammy nomination for Voices in 2001. Now, imagine if the guy had been promoting his own stuff on tour at that time, easy Grammy Win. Schon doesn't do that stuff though, he has always been part of Journey and been behind Steve Perry as far as who is Journey's identity to the casual music listener. Say Neal Schon and Journey and people think of Open Arms or DSB, not exactly fine examples of his great guitar work. If the guy had toured as himself a few times though, even if playing smaller venues, he gets name recognition, especially among voters in the awards programs which in fact would have helped Journey in the long run as far as winning over critics who think of the band as nothing more than a pop rock hit machine.
Neal is a better guitarist IMO than Pete Townshend or Richie Sambora BUT those guys have gone out and toured under their own names, developing an identity separate from The Who or Bon jovi, Selling a product that can be seen as their own and not part of band they are usually associated with. Neal has always been behind a band's name, never just as himself.
I've read and listened to a lot of Neal Schon interviews over the years and one thing I'm sure of is that this guy is just dying to win something.
Grammy, R&R HOF, just anything to hang his hat on. Create a little bit of separation between him and the Journey name and that might eventually happen.
