Someone just needs to light a fire under his ass before his talent is completely wasted. Nobody ever questions his sincerity. Touring is stressful, I can understand the pressure he must feel - that said, covering songs is not hard work.

You bring up a good point and don't you think anyone would have talked to him about this? It has to be a certainty that someone has. I wonder how he responded?

It appears (on the surface) that Neal is very interested in seeing what Arnel is really made of, but if Arnel doesn't have any passion, I don't see how it will work. If Neal is hoping to sit in a hotel room playing his guitar and have Arnel pipe in with some "Patiently" lyrics, I think he is going to be disappointed. They need to let Arnel give his input and don't filter him.

I am hoping we see great results on the next CD.

Maybe the next CD is where we will see what Arnel is made of. I read somewhere that he has contributed substantially to the new album. Can anyone remember this and where?
Maybe I was just having another one of my nightmares too.

I talked to him - kind of. I made an observation about him always saying it was just work on the old site, and it never happened again. I'm powerful.    Delusions of Grandeur.

That's funny, all of his fans swear he sounds like himself, not Perry. I'm talking about cover songs outside Journey. Instead of trying to do the imitating vocal effects, I'd like to hear him songs with his own voice where you know it's him, not someone trying to sound like Adams, Jamison, Roth, etc.

Don't just sing the song, own it if you can.

I'm a big fan of his and YES he sounds like Perry. That's cool. Perry sounds like Sam Cooke who I also like. Big deal.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Congrats to Arnel, it sounds like this is a done deal. :D

Now I hope he has enough confidence in himself to be himself. Maybe we will hear the real Arnel during this performance. :? and don't forget to rehearse

So, if he is using his natural voice, he should sound like Steve Perry when he sings a Bryan Adams tune or Survivor, right? That's all I'm saying. Do the songs in your own voice, no need to try and imitate the actual singer anymore. If it sounds like Perry singing November Rain, at least it's ahis own unique take on the song, not just another Axl Rose Copy Cat version.

Lea Salonga has sang a lot of covers in her career and has never even remotely sounded like the original singer. Using her own voice helped promote who she was and got her a great gig on Broadway and with Disney, not to mention a Tony Award. The local audiences seem fine with her not doing note for note imitations of those songs. I don't see what the harm would be for Arnel if he changed the songs up to express his own identity.

"MANILA, Philippines -- It's confirmed.

Arnel Pineda, the Filipino front man of popular American rock band "Journey," will sing the Philippine national anthem in Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s much-awaited fight with Ghanaian Joshua "The Grand Master" Clottey on March 13 (March 14 in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

In an exclusive interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Pineda confirmed that he was invited by Pacquiao to sing "Lupang Hinirang" in his upcoming fight.

"Pupunta ako sa Dallas to sing sa laban ni Manny [Pacquiao].This Thursday [ang alis ko]. (I am going to Dallas this Thursday to sing in Pacquiao's fight.)," Pineda said.

"I'm really happy kasi matutuloy na. Nahihiya na ako kay Manny kasi pangatlong invitation na ito sa akin. Baka kasi isipin ay iniisnab ko. So finally, matutuloy na. (This is my third invitation from Manny who might think I'm snubbing him. I'm happy this is finally pushing through), " he said.

The crooner said he was not able to sing in Pacquiao's previous fights because of his hectic schedule as Journey's vocalist.

Pineda, who was introduced over the phone to Pacquiao by common friends, was also present during the boxer's birthday party in General Santos last December.

Pineda is currently part of ABS-CBN's weekly variety show "ASAP XV."

Aside from singing in the Pacquiao-Clottey bout, Pineda is also set to fly back to US this coming April to record the latest album of Journey. -by Reyma Buan-Deveza, abs-cbnNEWS.com"

Good exposure for Pineda across the Philippines with this. It's a difficult song to sing and the last guy that sang it at one of these matches, Martin Nievera got a lot of flak for trying to stylize it the way American singers do with our own anthem. I'm expecting a safe, color by numbers performance here.
Nievera is a HUGE star and he got raked over the coals for his performance. Arnel will be scrutinized by the home country on this rendition, so here is hoping he steps up his game big time.

Again, if he doesn't do them like Perry, the Perry fans crucify him. They crucify him for sounding like Perry or not sounding like Perry. The guy can't win.

They used tape for Whitney, she admitted as much. They always have a backup for the Superbowl and they decided to go with that version for her particular performance.

Anyway, he is singing the Philippine National Anthem. Martin Nievera was threatened with fines for stylizing the song last fight so I don't Pineda will do anything beyond the standard version of the song. There is some government agency that monitors it's use in a public arena, I guess.

Seriously though, it's supposed to be a bit difficult to sing so I think a straight version is his best bet.

Not like I can tell the difference. Arnel can totally trash the song and we won't know until we read about it in the Philippine papers.
The big question is if Pacquiao loses, will it be considered Arnel's fault?

Good for him not apologizing. Never back down, Martin.

I didn't think it sucked. It wasn't great. But compared to that, Arnel's rendition will be amazing with his powerful tenor, clear, soaring vocals -- unless he does his raspy Bryan Adam's rendition.
