How do you feel about Jackson Browne and Dan Fogelberg? I was driving around last night, windows down here in Cleveland in March, 60 degrees at 10 o clock at night (rare as hell!) and listening to those two guys. It doesn't get much better than them. I like Fogelberg more than Browne, but damn are they both good lyricists.

Love Fogelberg. Run for the Roses(Kentucky Derby) and Leader of the Band(his father) are tremendous songs.

Love Browne too, although as a person his character is a bit suspect after he pounded on his old lady awhile back.

If you put Springsteen, Dylan, Browne, Fogelberg and Lennon in a pot and stirred it...man. Of those five guys, only Dylan's voice is shitty. What did Bruce say about Dylan though? "Elvis freed your body, and Bob frees your mind."

Now put Cain in there, and tell me which one doesn't belong there.

great songs. I have, like, three CDs of his. I love him and Neil Young. But this is my favorite song of his:

Like a Rolling Stone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TH6-bQYuiU

17 albums later, still great songs: Changing of the Guards:

I think "Liberty" is beautifully written along with a gorgeous melody.

Let's not get into a pissing match, because I always win :P Just sayin' that...well, ok, what does it tell you that Cain's copyright name was "Love Batch Music." it just a little gay after awhile don't you think? Hardly melting.

Yes maybe, but, some of these songs were conceived during vulnerable times or when you're down or troubled (lol) and/or when you're in love. And I bet you've said so many corny lines to Lula when you were still courting her. You can say the same to songwriting, the more heartfelt it is, the cheesiest the lyrics become.

About the copyright name, that's his choice. :)

still partial to Jimmy's re-writing of the lyrics on the bridge

original lyrics (pretty much classic Jonathan Cain)...
well he loves a little woman
some day he'll make his wife
saving all the overtime
for the one love of his life

Barnes re-write (pretty much classic Jimmy Barnes)
well he loves a little woman
but you best not tell his wife
or she's going to cut his balls off now
with a six-inch carving knife

wonder if Cain ever heard that one?!?

Wow, I didn't know that. Barnes is still awesome though! It's very unaustralian not to be a fan, though Jimmy Barnes & Cold Chisel are kickass anyway. One the Australian Idols did a cover of Working Class Man, it became an instant hit pretty quickly, though the Barnes version as Andrew said, is played every single day, probably 2-3 times?. I hear it all the time. all the time.

If for some reason you feel compelled to buy his live dvd called "Raw" (which I would strongly advise against with the drug abuse at its height), you'll hear the revised lyrics, which he was doing for a while. He also did it on the Ride the Night Away Live album from the UK a few years later. He's back to singing the original lyrics now.
