Top 10 Bands That Should Be in the RRHoF - Journey

Postby Rockwriter » Wed Mar 17, 2010 2:40 am

This past Sunday we devoted a very special episode of Long Live Rock to the Top 10 Bands That Should Be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, But Aren't. We compiled the list from a straight popular vote from fans online, and then we counted them down and debated the merits and weaknesses of each band. Charlie Brusco of Alliance Artists joined us to give an industry insider's point of view about the Hall of Fame, how it works, and why so many legendary bands are excluded. Charlie manages Styx and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and he's also on the board of the Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland.

Here's our Top Ten;

10) Jethro Tull 9) ELP 8) Judas Priest 7) Styx 6) Journey 5) Alice Cooper 4) KISS 3) Deep Purple 2) Yes 1) Rush

We also had guest comments from Gregg Rolie of Journey, Dennis Dunaway from the original Alice Cooper group, and Rick Wakeman from Yes. You can listen to it at this link: http://www.wewillrockyoublog.com/2010/0 ... but-arent/

Thanks!

Def Leppard, perchance.

Also, Boston, Queensryche, and Men Without Hats.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

Alice Cooper should have been in a long time ago. I saw his Welcome To My Nightmare tour in 1975 and it was awsome. :D

I don't get it either but one name I have seen brought up many times is Dave Marsh. Apparently he's a power and also has biases. I will admit that I am not that surprised that Journey is not in.

I was waiting for this. Yep, Dave Marsh is a Rolling Stone critic and he is also Springsteen's biographer. He for whatever reason hates Journey. I have heard him talk about it on Sirius and he just says there is no real case for them, or any of the same genre bands from that time. I think Marsh is a douche too, but he does have influence, as does Jon Landau, Springsteen's Manager. Now I haven't heard Landau speak one poor word about any band, so I won't cast stones at him. I guess Steve Van Zandt also writes letters of support for certain bands and he seems to always favour the not so big artists.

Anyway, I can't ever see Boston getting in. What have they done for rock n roll? made two good albums. They really didn't influence anybody or pioneer anything either.

KISS- No fucking way

Styx- never

Rush- absolutely, some day.

The one band who I cannot believe is not in is Lynard Skynard.

And Alice Cooper? What did he ever do wrong, except being a chronic alcoholic in the 80's? Hell the guy has even been married for over 30 years.

You know what dude, I would have to vote yes on Alice Cooper. He was a pioneer of whatever it was he did..maybe shock value. He is deserving, yes.

Moody Blues. They pretty much upped the game on concept albums in the late 60s. #1 records in the U.S. and Europe. Got the ball ruling with Orchestra's mixing in with rock concerts. Still touring after 40 years.

How are they not in? I assumed they were a no brainer. Well they're sure as Hell going to go in before Journey does.

I don't hate KISS. I laugh at them all the time. They're hilarious. They are like pro wrestling. NO ONE takes them seriously, nor should they. Just because these clowns put white face paint on does not make them a great band. I know Marsh hates KISS.

Not sure whether to call it a joke, but the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is meaningless. Who cares. Just an excuse to give Cleveland some pub. Glancing through a Hard Rock Cafe while having a cold one is fine by me.

Here are inductees that leave me scratching my head, most all of which I have no idea how they could be considered to be Rock and Roll performers. What would you think if someone said, "I'm going to a Rock n Roll concert tonight." "Who you seeing?" "Insert name of any of the following." What would you think?:

Louis Armstrong - I love the guy, but Rock n Roll????
Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys
Grandmaster Flash
Al Green
Madonna
Stevie Wonder

Others that are plain worthless:

Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Madonna
The Pretenders
REM
Run DMC
The Stooges
Talking Heads

Fuckin a Pete, this isn't just you, but this is at least the fourth time here I've seen Cleveland incorrectly being mentioned in connection with the Rock Hall problems. I'm gonna say it real nice, slow, and big for all of you fuckin people to get this unfortunate fact through your thick fuckin skulls:

CLEVELAND, THE CITY, AND THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF CLEVELAND-SIDE ROCK HALL ADMINISTRATION HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH WHO GETS INDUCTED TO THE HALL. NOTHING. ZILCH. ZERO. NADA.

WHERE'S THE INDUCTION CONCERT NEARLY EVERY YEAR? NEW YORK.

GUESS WHO RUNS THE ROCK HALL AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH WHO GETS IN? THAT BUTTFUCKING COCKSUCKING FAG JANN WENNER, HIS HIPPIE ROLLING STONE CRONIES, AND A FEW OTHER RICH NEW YORK SOCIALITES. CLEVELAND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT AND IT SURE AS SHIT DOESN'T GET MUCH "PUB" FROM HAVING THE HALL HERE CONSIDERING ANY BIG ROCK HALL EVENT IS ALMOST ALWAYS CONNECTED TO NEW YORK.

Now, I hope that clears up the misconception.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

Styx?
Journey?
Triumph?
Rush?
Kiss?

Just not hip enough, in my opinion. ABBA in this year - There's more to ABBA than any regular American Joe Sixpack would realize when it comes to music and rock and roll.....Genesis? I think that's nuts, Genesis?? May as well induct Starship.....

Anyway, out of the list above I agree with all of them except Styx and ELP. Especially Judas Priest and Rush.

Kiss?

Just not hip enough, in my opinion. ABBA in this year - There's more to ABBA than any regular American Joe Sixpack would realize when it comes to music and rock and roll.....Genesis? I think that's nuts, Genesis?? May as well induct Starship.....

You don't like Genesis? I'm shocked. What a great band.

I grew up on the "Invisible Touch" and "Illegal Alien" Genesis. Nothing before that really touched me, and everything since has been unlistenable...Just my opinion....Ironically I love Peter Gabriel's early solo work and I have tremendous respect for Phil Collins. But personally I equate "I Can't Dance" with a song like "We Built This City."

Well, the prog era is of course going to be either a you like it you don't kinda thing, that's the nature of it. But the era you grew up with is such great pop/rock music that that alone should qualify them. The Calling All Stations album was really the biggest black mark for me, I forget who was even singing on it, but man, that was badddddd. But overall, great talents and a great band, very much deserving for the hall.

I do think they were inducted as a way to "throw a bone" to the prog-heads who have been calling for prog bands to get their due in the Hall, while knowing full well that most people would identify with the pop era.
