and speaking of classic rockers... I am still shocked the doobie brothers are not in the hall of fame...is that right?

STYX REO JOURNEY and some other classic guys wont be elected in until about 10-15 years from now... just my opinion..
its too early and they dont deserve it yet before the other greats that have not been elected yet...
and after last night the rock and roll hall of fame is not a joke... just because your favorites arent in it yet... doesnt make it that way... after watching last night... and the speeches given... they were all moved by being in the same class as their fore fathers... and guys... sometimes its better to have to wait for something special... and it will have more meaning to the band... than getting recognized WAY TOO EARLY... The bands will be more appreciative of the award...just saying...

One that surprises me is that Alice Cooper is not in yet. He's a pioneer to a genre and a genius.
Plus he looks like my aunt marge

Wait a minute. You are saying that ABBA, is less deserving than Styx? Triumph being mentioned here isn't even funny. Kiss isn't even a real band, they were a rock version of the Monkees. Rush I can understand. Those guys are mega talented. But you can forget about Styx ever getting in, and the only way Triumph gets close to the Hall is if they tour Cleveland, Ohio.

Abba is a good band but I wouldn't personally consider them rock. I am not a big fan of Kiss, but it would seem to me that they are more of a "rock" band than Abba - don't you think so?

This whole "rock" or "pop" thing to me is a gray area. I just imagine that the Hall is called "rock" but it obviously contains all kinds of genres, and a lot of the inductees are pop, and many are deserving.

I agree! And maybe they should have named it something to include the "pop" music too, so that people don't get so worked up over the fact that other musicians are included! I don't see anything wrong with having all musicians eligible.

Motown/Soul, Pop, maybe even some organic forms of R&B are all great additions to the Hall. But, I draw the line at inducting rap music - come on, there's no melody or instrumentation there at all. Hell, half of it is stolen from real "rock" artists. Rap simply shouldn't be eligible.

Yeah, but then that would scream "racism" if they excluded only that genre. You KNOW that would be the argument!

Triumph? They're never getting inducted. Kiss will eventually, so will Rush. Styx is a long shot, though I'd like to see them make it.

Why do you say Styx and Triumph are a long shot? They were much more popular than Iggy fucking Pop!

I think Iggy Pop has a WAY bigger following than you think. Not me of course  But I do know he has a big following. More than Triumph I think.

Not in the Midwest USA where I live. I would guess that many of my friends who love Styx, Journey, and Rush have never even heard of him. Maybe he is popular elsewhere in the USA or outside the country, but not here. I can't even tell you one song that he sings.

Well the iggy followers I knew were in Erie, Pa, which is PRACTICALLY the midwest  And it was people who were teens in the late 70's, not the 80's. You might be too young to know

You're right, I was not a big 70's rock fan. But I know all the good rock bands from that time, and Iggy isn't one of them IMO. The only recollection I have of Iggy Pop is a guy who used to be a big fan and then went to prison for being a pedo. So I have always associated Iggy Pop with pedophilia.

So whatever your opinion is on all music should be the only ones inducted then? Okay now I get it!!!

No, I just don't consider Iggy Pop and Abba to be "rock bands" - I think they are punk and pop. To be honest, I had never even heard of a band called "The Stooges" until today, so maybe they are a rock band. The only Stooges I have ever heard of are the Three Stooges, so they can't be very popular. I just asked my wife if she ever hear of "THe Stooges" and she said no. From what I heard of Iggy Pop it sounded like hardcore punk music.

Well that's why they really should change the name of the hall of fame. I think people get picky because of the "rock and roll" part of the name. And pop and punk are both forms of rock. They just aren't melodic rock. You couldn't even have rock and roll without blues music. I think the other bands fit in too.

So if they are all "rock" bands, why does the Billboard Charts have separate categories for pop and rock music?

I didn't say they were "rock" bands. I said their music is a FORM of rock. There is a difference. It's called "Punk Rock". They divide it because they realize each form of music has its own followers I would guess.

marekting and radio... which artists gets played and where...

and remember billboard charts and the rock and roll hall of fame are not related... the Rock and roll hall of fame puts in bands writers producers becaue of impact they made on the industry over time......

Yeah, Genesis' body of work is so much more impressive, right? The Greats get fast tracked in, and it also helps when your manager is on the Board at the RnRHOF. Jon Landau is his manager, and an influential member of the Hall.

You do that.

I love Genesis including their self gratifying Gabriel years, but this comparing these 2 is stupid.

Both deserve to be in.

The Boss never stopped being relevant while Genesis was gone for a while.

No one is going to want to hear this but a band who has been mentioned as being a contender in the next year is Def Leppard. Two Diamond Albums, one of which had 7 songs in the Hot 100. One of the first harder rock bands along with AC-DC to break into the Top 40 pop charts and set the tone for the wave of hairbands who would dominate the charts through out the 80s.

God no! Garbage of the worst kind. Dude, if they somehow sneak in, I am keeping that promise I made to Elliot three years ago drunk backstage in Boston. If they get in, I am going to rip off Rick Allen's other arm and beat him with it, badly. :)

The RRHF is not limited to just Rock music, so they really should call it something else - right now probably The RollingStone Music Club. Since they do induct artists from other genres, I am glad they inducted ABBA. They were a phenomenal Pop band, very talented both vocally (AnniFrid and Agnetha) and musically (Benny and Bjorn), and still relevant 36 years later influencing modern artists and popular culture.

Some of the artists they have inducted are ridiculous and some they have ignored are decisions based in arrogance and snobbery. The music industry is ALL about the money now and has been for some time, so snubbing Journey for being "Corporate Rock" is pathetic. Who of the great artists in the RRHF haven't been letting their music be used to push commercial crap on TV? Journey has been around for 37 years, created incredible music, had one of the most amazing vocalists in Rock history and one of the most incredible guitarists too, is still touring, and one of their songs (DSB of course) is a freaking cult phenomenon. What more do they need?

I agree with you. I have nothing against Abba (took my kids to the live Mamma Mia musical and they loved it). But I just don't consider them a "rock" band anymore than I would consider Air Supply, Olivia Newton John, or Captain & Tennille a "rock" band.

Music snob.

I guess you'll have time to get the "Danger Danger" write-in ballot going while you are busy skipping watching anyone else.

Dude, just continue listening to what society deems popular, and STFU.

Sherry, your avatar gives me an instant boner. Thank you for that.

Now seriously, you think if Marsh and Landau and the other powers to be know anything about them deceiving fans for three years, you think that will matter? I am being serious. That issue is serious.

Now for the record, I DO think their body of work from 1978 through 1996, and the pioneering of the power ballad along with stage set ups and video screens, should get them in. However, post 1996 is off the table. I really think the classic lineup and Herbie Herbert should all be inducted into the Hall. However, if the powers at the HOF cite lip syncing and say "no" I can't really blame them, can you?

God no! Garbage of the worst kind. Dude, if they somehow sneak in, I am keeping that promise I made to Elliot three years ago drunk backstage in Boston. If they get in, I am going to rip off Rick Allen's other arm and beat him with it, badly. :)

My shoulder just started throbbing.

I get what you are trying to sell S2M, but society BUYS the fucking records. I guess by doing the purchasing, they are deeming what is popular, or basically what is good for that matter. I would say there is a pretty good reason why Springsteen has sold 90 million records in the USA alone and Danger Danger has sold 200,000. There must be some ridiculous reason why Bruce outsells anyone in the fucking business. I am not putting down Danger Danger, as I think they are pretty fuckin solid. But when you make an outrageous argument like that, it's pretty easy to refute it.

I think that because there was already a bias against Journey that the lip-synching will be used to justify keeping Journey out of the RRHF and that's a shame, because you are right - it should be about Journey 1978-1996. It just sucks that they managed to undermine all of those years of hard work, damaged their credibility with the industry and probably get referenced with Milli Vanilli.

So many artists today lip-synch in concert or use enhanced vocals - even when Madonna claimed to be singing live, I read that she had a team of backup singers off stage where no one in the audience could see them and she got in. Isn't it true that artists like Beyonce record special tracks to be used during concerts to make it appear completely live, but aren't really or at least entirely? The difference may be that the audience is aware of that probability and overlooks it.

The difference for Journey, I suppose, is that they unnecessarily deceived their fans. It wasn't a sudden case of laryngitis or vocal deterioration and now they are faced with pulling out of a tour - although I believe there is insurance for that. They (or perhaps their management) got greedy and kept doing it for years, staying on the road touring instead of giving Steve Augeri the break he needed to recover his voice. There seem to be almost no rules in the music industry, but I guess getting caught "faking it" is one of the few.

If the powers that be at the RRHF were motivated and wanted to induct Journey, they might overlook that and consider their body of work 1978-96 (perhaps even 1974-96), but I don't think they want them in in the first place. I think the lip-synching gives the RRHF a legitimate reason and I can't blame them either, but it just seems so unfair that members who had nothing to do with that, like Steve Perry, Steve Smith, George Tickner, Aynsley Dunbar, and Herbie Herbert lose out. (I didn't include Gregg Rolie because he is already in).

Do you think there is any way for Journey to make up for it?
