Why does Joe Bonamassa...

Postby PianoMan1986 » Sun Feb 07, 2010 8:55 am

Why/How does Joe Bonamassa seem to crank out so many albums so fast? I admit, I don't know his material, but as much as the "Caveman" seems to work with him...I don't know, just amazes me.

Good question. I've been questioning whether the Caveman still has his touch. Seems like he slipped a bit on the sound quality of the Journey Live in Manila DVD. Also, I don't think he did as well on Revelation as he did on Arrival. He seems pretty excited about working with Joe, however.

I though Revelation had a better sound quality , crispness, compared to Arrival. But Trial By Fire was heads and tails above both and Shirley's best work with them.

Yeah, neither Rev nor Arrival are benchmarks for sound by any stretch of the imagination.

Different ears, I guess. I don't hear it on TBF. I prefer the sound quality of Arrival, myself. Maybe that's what happens to 50 year old ears that have listened to too much rock n roll.

I don't know much about that anyway, so don't ask me. And maybe it was just that Augeri's vocals were deeper in the mix, which was fine but sometimes harder to understand, not so much sound production as far the instruments or melody, I guess. Someone more knowledgeable can address those three albums rather than me b/c I know nothing.

TBF is sonically better than both Revelation and Arrival. It's like comparing a BMW to a Buick.

I think the difference you're hearing is in the mastering. Arrival has a lower-mid bump which gives it some grind and thump and it's a strong mastering... Revelation has an overall upper mid bump that lends a bit of crispness to the record. However, Revelation is also mastered at a lower volume...too low in fact. I prefer arrival over revelation in all respects. There's better direction, production, arrangement of songs....and Arrival sounds 100 times better in my car. I can crank Arrival and not have to dime my car stereo. I literally have to dime the fucking knob to get a chest thumping tone out of revelation...

As far as TBF is concerned....you can bet your testicles and those of all the men here, that TBF had a recording and mastering budget that eclipsed revelation and arrival combined, several times over. You're probably hearing the extra money that was spent...

Thanks for the info. And I do love Arrival in my car stereo compared to our home stereo system. But the above bolded part

TBF
Engineer, Mixing - George Massenburg
Engineer - Kevin Scott
Producer, Engineer, Mixing - Kevin Shirley
Mastered by George Marino

Arrival
Technician - Jason Patterson
Producer, Engineer, Mixing - Kevin Shirley
Editing - Pat Thrall
Mastering - George Marino

Revelation
Producer, Engineer, Mixing - Kevin Shirley
Mastered by George Marino

I had no idea George Massenburg engineered on TBF... that guys a friggin LEGEND in the recording industry... pretty much invented the parametric equalizer...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
