Facebook tops Google (sort of)

For the week ending in March 13, more people visited Facebook than Google - marking one of the only times, and by far the longest, the social networking site has garnered more hits than the reigning search engine.

According to the web monitoring site Hitwise.com, Facebook.com got 7.07 % of all Internet traffic for that week, while Google.com got 7.03%.

That marks a market increase of 185% for Facebook compared to the same week last year, but just a 9% jump for Google.

Facebook has beat Google in hits before, for one or two days at a time, including the most recent Christmas Eve and Christmas, New Year's Eve and New Year's day, and the weekend of March 6 and 7.

However, Matt McGee, a writer for SearchEngineLand.com noted in a post that the stats only incorporate the sites' main pages. That means visits to Google News, Google Blogs, Gmail or other Google-related sites did not count.

He acknowledged, however, that Facebook's popularity seems to be growing faster than Google's.

“It seems likely this is going to happen again and again,” he wrote.
