More than likely the first I remember would be one of the early 80s Journey/REO/Starship-type ones, since I was a little kid with an older sister playing all that kind of stuff around me between having the radio on all the time and playing the records. Probably would say Open Arms. I do remember that one clearly.

I still love thw quote that Perry said in BTM... when John Waite said Open Arms was too sappy... Perry says bad for them good for us. That line still cracks me up... and I will say that open arms is too sappy... faithfully MUCH BETTER POWER BALLAD... but not the first...

Love me tender... would be first rock ballad..

Did you not get the "memo" that Open Arms is not....I believe the words were "crunchy enough"?

Yeah and apparantly Opens Arms sux right? funny that, just thought i'd mention its Journey's single most successfull song in the charts back in their glory days, forget Don't Stop Beleivin'. If DSB was actually bigger in 81 when it really matterd, I'd might say otherwise. And if you watch the VH1 Behind the Music Journey episode, there are professional music historians talking about the fact how Journey invented the power ballad! :D

They didn't invent it Vladan, they made it popular and they were good at it. Two completely different things here.

No problem Dean, true. Yes very true, they made it "safe" yep, I remember now. Cheers mate ;)

I wonder if you guys really remember the very first ballad you ever heard or are you just posting the first one that comes to mind? Just curious...to be honest I can't say for sure what the first ballad was for me but this one comes pretty damn close and I thought, and still think, it is an amazing song
