Anyone think the NFL will NOT go country at next year's game in Dallas? Shania Twain was the last CW artist to be on stage in 2003. Does Journey get some play with all the DSB love that's been going around lately (does Journey even want to go back after their hiccup in the beer garden or would it be a great way to kickstart their 2011 world tour)?

MTV's Top 5 halftime shows.

5: Super Bowl XXXVII (Shania Twain, No Doubt and Sting)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48, Oakland Raiders 21
What could liven up one of the worst Super Bowls ever played? Shania kicked off half time in 2003 with "Man I Feel Like a Woman." Sure, it was radio-friendly, but maybe not the best way to jump-start a Super Bowl crowd. Bring in No Doubt and a push-up crazy Gwen Stefani singing "I'm Just a Girl" — well, that's more like it! Cap it off with an awesome duet with Sting on "Message in a Bottle" and Gwen pretty much guaranteed herself a spot in Super Bowl history.

4: Super Bowl XLI (Prince)
Indianapolis Colts 29, Chicago Bears 17
The Purple One faced an uphill battle: Not only was it pouring rain in Miami, but he also didn't have any other acts surrounding him to pick up the slack. But clearly, nothing could stop him, as he busted out guitar solo after guitar solo on classics like "Let's Go Crazy," "1999" and "Proud Mary," as well as a cover of Foo Fighters "Best of You." His show-closing "Purple Rain" made even the most hard-edged Bears fan swoon.

3: Super Bowl XXXV (Aerosmith, 'NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly)
Baltimore Ravens 34, Giants 7
2001 was MTV's first chance at producing the show, and they absolutely nailed it. It was a multi-genre explosion that featured Aerosmith, 'NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly all sharing the stage. (If only the Ravens didn't blow out my Giants 34-7 in one of the most lopsided Super Bowls ever.) Still, seeing Britney and JT share a stage was almost as sweet as the half-Giants, half-Ravens jersey Nelly sported during the show.

2: Super Bowl XXVII (Michael Jackson)
Dallas Cowboys 52, Buffalo Bills 17
The energy of the Super Bowl half time show really didn't pick up steam until about 1993 when Michael Jackson was the lone performer (of course, if you count the 3,500 kids who joined him on stage during "Heal the World," that number increases significantly). The epic "Heal the World" performance capped off a run through "Jam," "Billy Jean" and "Black or White." It was Michael at his peak, and he certainly set a precedent for gigantic spectacles at the Super Bowl.

1: Super Bowl XXXVI (U2)
New England Patriots 20, St Louis Rams 17
U2 took the stage in 2002 for an unbelievable, unforgettable and beautiful tribute to the victims of September 11, 2001. With a banner scrolling through the nearly 3,000 victims draped behind them, Bono and company performed a rendition of "Where the Streets Have No Name" that was felt across the country. It was a much-needed boost to the American psyche, and what better stage than the Super Bowl to accomplish just that?

Gunbot, dude, check yourself. Not about Chesney, as I think he would be a killer show. Chesney, Keith Urban or the Rascal Flatts would all be killer acts, but my problem with what your post contains is the MTV citation.  You have got to be kidding? Aerosmith and Britney were awful. No Doubt was terrible. Michael Jackson was just okay. I went and watched his show on youtube the other day. Not very impressive.

It isn't even up for debate...regardless of whether you like them or not, but Bruce Springsteen and U2 were the best ever, in either order I might add. Prince was great. Paul McCartney was solid. The Stones were good. Tom Petty was even better than the Stones. There's your top 5 Super Bowl halftime acts. MTV has ZERO music credibility unless there is a rapper somewhere going to jail on a drug or gun charge. I love Shania but she was actually sick that day and had to lip sync her song, and that was a problem too, in that she only had one song. No Doubt was pure liquefied shit. Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson were terrible, and needed tittygate to garner any attention at all.

I know you aren't a Bruce fan Gunny, but even you have to admit his show was fucking stellar. I agree with you on U2. Those two, without question, were the best by far, and it's no coincidence that they are the world's two biggest and best touring acts.

My money is on either Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Brad Pasley or the Rascal Flatts(or a combination of them), for the country genre, or maybe Bon Jovi for the rock entry. I know I have been critical of BJ lipping, but they have a solid history and are pretty good guys from Jersey.

Sorry Chubby, Journey is never getting close to that stage. They just aren't, despite what all the myopic retarded Pinoy's think and believe. Pineda is not a star, in fact he isn't even close. Not to bag on him, but you Pinheads out there are being laughed at by other music fans. Again, not a Pineda basher, because I like him, but dude hasn't written a single song yet. No doubt he can hit a note, but he is not in the league of the previous SB Halftime guests, not even close.

That's why it says MTVs top 5. I'm going to take a guess and say that viewer numbers are tied in with this list's standing more than talent.

I do agree with U2 being at the number one spot though.

I think the show for 2011 will have a country act and 2012 will have an R&B act or some type of collaboration. In 2013, probably Daughtry or someone like that with an AI backround.

I am biased of course, but Wyatt and I both watched U2 and Bruce's performance this morning. I have to say Bruce's was far more entertaining, just more fun to watch, and it sounded better too, but U2 had the whole 9/11 thing to go on. Different moods for these two different years for sure. I thought U2 did justice to the tribute,a very respectful performance. I don't think talent wise U2 can hold a stick to the E Street Band, although I do like Bono and the boys a lot. Good guys. They have a new CD coming out very soon- Jana, you hear that? It's already in the can.

Gunbot, what about Jovi? Were they overlooked last year because Springsteen just did it, and they are both from Jersey? They have to be the next rock act in line to do it, don't you think? Especially now that they are touring, and will be tight and in order? I am sure they will record the high parts and use backing tape, but that's ok for the Super Bowl, right?

Sorry Chubs, can't bring myself to signing the Journey petition. Darn!

I had heard they were the front runner last year but if they are going to be opening the new Giants/Jets Stadium, I don't know if the NFL would double dip with them.
I really think the melodic rock acts have had their run and the League will change it up for the next few years.
The success of Glee on the charts has proven you can take older music and adapt it to new a new generation with different musicians. A double edged sword for older bands who benefited from the exposure but the young listeners are totally digging the revamped covers of these songs over the originals. I think the sun is setting on the melodic rock Renaissance we had over the last few years. Now, the music can be presented with a new take and with performers that aren't 50 years old. I know people here will say blasphemy but the billboard numbers will tell the tale. All the Glee soundtrack albums are selling well while the groups they cover, after an initial bump have slid back down again.
For all the rah, rah surrounding DSB in the UK, It was the Glee Version that shot right past the original upon release and got to #2 on their charts.

I had an attorney talking about the halftime show, and he said he wished Bruce Springsteen would do it every year b/c he was fantastic. He also said he thought Arnel was really good.

If you, the NFL, have to choose between Journey and the Glee cast singing DSB at the Superbowl, do you go with the group with the non original singer singing the original version or do you go with the hot new cover band singing a new interpretation of the song and and burning up the charts and digital downloads with their current releases?
To me it's a tough call. Do you go with nostalgia or with what's hot at the moment? The Glee cast can you give you a freakin' medley of 80s hits.
Journey could too with Arnel's talent but that would be pretty belittling to Neal, I would think.

Gag me, Glee. ughhhh, for the superbowl. Give me a rock act with great musicians (yes, Journey) or a superstar, but don't give me a bunch of kids doing their AI version of DSB.

I think your normal NFL audience it is a bit older than the average GLEE audience. I'm not betting on this one.

Depends on who the audience is? It's certainly not 10 year old girls. :?

I'd agree with CW next year though, CW is probably the most popular music out there among adults, I'm bettin' next would be classic rock.

the sad part is there are no great newer bands since 2000 on except Muse, ColdPlay, Daughtrey, Kings of Leon etc. And few of the 90s bands have superstar status that has lasted, or not disbanded, like the great ones from the 80s and 70s.

Muse is playing stadiums in Europe right now. That opening gig with U2 just solidified their status even more.

I see Daughtry Getting his shot a halftime sooner rather than later.

I vote for Muse. They would be great. They've been big in Europe. I couldn't figure out why they haven't broke big here, but U2 did help and that single on the award show gave them great exposure.

Yes maybe, but maybe Bon Jovi can get away with being called something other than melodic rock? I certainly think Springsteen is melodic, but many here do not agree. Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeig Jovi. They have audiences from both genres...see with Journey, Lula and I were talking, and I actually said they could do it, that they had enough rock songs and DSB of course to get by, but Lula said they are seen as too wimpy. I got around to thinking about it and she may be right. I put together 4 songs from them, which was the length of Bruce's set(albeit edited and shortened), and came up with DSB, SW, AWYWI and maybe a new one or some other song...see, after the 3 obvious feel good tunes, there aren't that many songs that are noticeable to the average fan, that still semi rock.

So I mentioned BJ, Billy Joel, Elton John, Rascal Flatts, Chesney, Paisley and Urban. One of those acts have to get it this year.

Of course, a bunch of old guys are in the lead right at the moment (The Kinks)

Who should perform at next year's Super Bowl half time show?

The Kinks
Madonna
AC/DC
Bob Dylan
Elton John
Billy Joel
Pink Floyd
David Bowie
Taylor Swift
Miley Cyrus
Fleetwood Mac
Van Halen
Santana
Pixies
Nine Inch Nails
Britney Spears
Justin Timberlake

I would vote for Joel or Elton.

Gunbot, I see where you're headed here and I don't agree. Glee isn't a football, adult crowd. I can't see putting up Taylor Swift for that matter against an icon like Elton John or Billy Joel, or especially Bon Jovi. Parading out the WHO set classic Rock back IMO, because they are old yes, but they look ancient too. At least Bruce and U2 look good, semi young, and their songs don't really sound dated. Their still relevant too; maybe that has something to do with it?

On this list, you can cross out 9 inch nails(too hard), VH(broken up), Pixies(suck) and the Kinks(too old). Madonna may be too feminine. Well what about Shania Twain? She did it? Yes, but she has a different audience than Madonna. Hell, I can see the NFL bringing her back, being that she is returning to the stage this year, is much bigger now, and her first time she only played one song.
Fleetwood Mac is interesting, but they would have to lip it...

I like how MTV of course, puts Spears and Timberlake on there...lol. Timberlake already fucked up one SB show and Britney is a train wreck waiting to happen.

ACDC is a helluva choice..just saw them on here...OK, so it's down to ACDC, Billy Joel and BJ in rock, and maybe a combo of Urban, Chesney for country, and/or Rascal Flatts.

I just can't see Journey getting asked. I am seriously trying, but just don't see it.

I don't know if I ever mentioned this, but he was asked back last year, for back to back years. He of course said "no" because well, the first time they were asked, it was the 14th request and they finally said yes...I think mainly because they just lost Danny to melanoma, and they are getting up there in age(although Bruce has the body of a 40 yr old, Clarence can hardly walk)...anyway, they did it because they wanted to do at least one and figured they better do it before it's too late. I don't know how it would have played out had he done it 2 years in a row...but I did read on Backstreets, that there was almost an agreement, had the NFL granted more time for the show. IIRC, Bruce wanted maybe 22-24 minutes..the NFL actually thought about it, but them both parties said, maybe next time. I am certain he will do it again for sure..he'll certainly be asked again.

Oh and Jana, Pineda is good, he just isn't a star.

I will eat a shoe if that ever happens. Not gonna.

Looking at MTV's poll, I'd vote for Elton John, Billy Joel... even Van Halen or Santana.

If I didn't hate and despise that pile of shit Schon so much, I would take a chance if I was the NFL and let him do the Star Spangled Banner on guitar. But the critics would scoff at that; while the guy is pretty good, you could have gotten someone more popular, like Clapton, Santana or Beck I happened to like the SSB when he did it on the Lipping Tour in 06.

Well shit, Pineda's facial expressions scared the hell out of me and I was home watching on TV! He looked like the fucking Undertaker, with his eyes rolling back and all that shit. Man, he shit the bed that day, that's for sure. That was not a good day for Pineda. He was awful.
