Wronggggg. Journey was very popular in the Philippines. You can get a glimpse of what's popular back then by merely looking at Arnel's covers. People expect cover bands to play only the most popular songs and with that, may I remind you that he covered Separate Ways, DSB, Faithfully and Open Arms.Pretty cool huh. 8)

Chubbs, I am not getting personal and mean, but you didn't even know about Just the Same Way when you got on this board! Every Journey fan knows the old Classic lineup hits, from Infinity through Captured.

Oh, and if you are talking popular songs, dear. Springsteen has twice as many hits as Journey, and I can list them if I want. This isn't a pissing contest, but Bruce has these hits and he doesn't really aspire to be a hit machine.

I grew up in the Philippines and I came here in the early 90's. I admit that I don't know all the Journey songs but I am aware of some of the dirty dozen because they were on regular rotation. That song was not even in the list of the most popular songs by Journey in the Phil back then. Btw, SP's Foolish Heart was very popular.

Btw, I found this article, I don't know if this is a good or bad news...

Speculation started about the 2011 Super Bowl halftime entertainment the minute the 2010 Super Bowl ended last month.

But yesterday, Fox Sports Chief Executive David Hill was quoted in our Game On blog as saying he's sure the 2011 show won't feature an aging rocker.

"Oh, please, God, yes," Hill told the L.A. Times. "If I saw (Who guitarist) Pete Townshend's belly again I was going to throw up. In his younger days it might have been rippling muscle, but now it's like mine -- rippling fat. From the conversations I've had with the NFL, we won't need oxygen."

Neal and Jon look like babies compared to those two, and have way more energy -- okay, maybe not Jon after seeing him on the Manila DVD.

"Aging Rocker" is a matter of degree to me - Journey is certainly more "current" than the Who in many ways, as well as being a product of the 80s rather than (largely) the 60s and 70s. I wouldn't put too much credit in a blanket definition like that.

I think Journey is capable of pulling off a great performance. Will they get the chance? Probably not. I'm sure Neal would have the Glock talk with Arnel. :D

For next year, what's to say they would go for another rock group anyway? Tom Petty, Springsteen, and The Who have been the last three acts. I think they go country for this upcoming bowl and pop music for the next one.

I like Tom Petty but how he got that gig three years ago is way beyond me.

Actually Journey fans can take heart in that. If Tom Petty can do the Super Bowl, then the criteria isn't quite a stringent as we may think.

I agree. Start off with Separate Ways extended version. It would be way better than a lot of the other acts on there save U2, Springsteen, etc.

What? You have to admit after 14 years with no live performances and being 60, it's not the best place to make your first live performance. He wouldn't risk it. A lot of them lipsync b/c of the acoustics. He would do a smaller intimate venue first, I guarantee.

If the singer isn't the original guy and the rest of the band will be miming the instrumental parts anyway, why not just put Glee out there?

I'll take the band Journey. I don't think the band would be miming the instruments. Did U2 and Springsteen? i can't remember.

Edge was the only live (as in, allowed to free lance) musician out of the last ten acts, only because he is who he is and the whole scope of that show because of 9/11. There is just not enough time to prep instruments with sound checks and such.. The official answer from the NFL is everyone is live and all the mics are live, they just have everything pre-recorded as a backup to fill in if there are any guffaws. Make of that what you will. The pyrotechnics are timed to the taped performance so that can give you an idea about how much of it is actually live.

Kenny Chesney has 5,663 signatures on one page, and 163 signatures on another. Plokkers have their work cut out for them.

Chesney already has said he would like to do the show. Has Neal made a public statement yet regarding whether they actually want the opportunity? You might get a few more votes if the band comes out and says they are interested.

You may not be a Tom Petty fan but the guy is a legend. His selection reflects nothing on Journey's chances or lack thereof.

I'm a fan of Petty but can you really put him in the category of a high profile act that is guaranteed to get you viewership. I'm not knocking the guy, just looking at from a causal fan perspective. To me his selection really appeared to be from a fan on the selection committee who sold the fuck out of the guy and got everyone to grudgingly go along with it despite their personal feelings on the subject. And to be honest, Petty did not disappoint. He brought his A-Game and rewarded their trust in him.

Have you been to a Petty show? The guy sells out our biggest venue every time and I don't believe we are the exception. He's a very popular artist who has that unique ability to transcend generations - he's loved by old and young alike.

Now, with all that said, I find his live performances to be a bit boring - they are faithful to the record and play very well... but to a fault! There's none of that rib-thumping live energy or spontaneity in most of the tunes for me.

I got to see Tom a few years back and found him putting on an excellent show. He sells out but in the same vein, so does Iron Maiden whether it be the LA. Forum or what ever. You ain't going to see those guys doing halftime anytime soon, though. Believe me, their energy makes Journey, foreigner, Styx, etc. look like pussies

AC-DC needs to do half time, seriously.

I like Tom Petty but how he got that gig three years ago is way beyond me.

Actually Journey fans can take heart in that. If Tom Petty can do the Super Bowl, then the criteria isn't quite a stringent as we may think.

One of the few excellent younger contemporary alternative rock bands out there that's, actually, original. Most younger bands to me these days sound the same. Big overseas and finally getting their due here. They would be electrifying live at the superbowl.
