I am not proud to be an Iowan today... funny the union members care only about the day off... ;-) but glad that the city came in and stood up for the day...

One week before the most solemn day in the Christian year, the city of Davenport, Iowa decided to officially axe Good Friday from its municipal calendar, setting off a storm of complaints from religious people and union members whose contracts give them that day off.
(Getty Images)Taking a recommendation by the Davenport Civil Rights Commission to change the holiday's name to something more ecumenical, City Administrator Craig Malin sent a memo to municipal employees announcing Good Friday would officially be known as "Spring Holiday."

"My phone has been ringing off the hook since Saturday," said city council alderman Bill Edmond. "People are genuinely upset because this is nothing but political correctness run amok."

Edmond said the city administrator made the change unilaterally and did not bring it to the council for a vote, a requirement for a change in policy.

We were blind sided and now we've got to clean this mess up. How do you tell people the city renamed a 2,000 year old holiday?" said Edmond.

It didn't take long for the city the resurrect the name Good Friday. Malin was overruled today and the words "Spring Holiday" disappeared.

Good Friday commemorates the day Jesus was crucified and died. Christians celebrate his resurrection the following Sunday, Easter.

The Civil Rights Commission said it recommended changing the name to better reflect the city's diversity and maintain a separation of church and state when it came to official municipal holidays.

"We merely made a recommendation that the name be changed to something other than Good Friday," said Tim Hart, the commission's chairman. "Our Constitution calls for separation of church and state. Davenport touts itself as a diverse city and given all the different types of religious and ethnic backgrounds we represent, we suggested the change."

News of the change could not have come at more significant time in the Christian calendar. News of the name change spread through the town on Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, becoming a topic of conversation at church services throughout Davenport

Renaming "Veterans Day" to "America's day of regretful aggression towards innocent countries"? Fuck those people! If they don't like this country (which was founded on CHRISTIAN principles), they can take their Muslim, Athiest, Agnostic asses right to the fucking airport and exit stage left. Go live in Cuba or North Korea for awhile you fucking retards, then lets see if you bitch about a holiday name!!!

Oh good lord.

Ok, well, I'm giving my thoughts whether they are wanted or not.

Strike it from the calendar no matter what it's called. Here's why: it's not a national holiday. And who cares what it's called, no one is getting the day off of work and the mail is still being delivered and the banks are open. Get Yom Kippur off of there too while you're at it. I'll let them have Rosh Hashanha, cuz that's their really big deal one, but come on, enough is enough with all these holidays that only certain groups recognize. If I have to show up for work and I'm still getting mail, it's not a holiday.

By the way, having grown up Catholic, I can tell you that no one even bothers about good friday anyway. Easter is the biggie. (that's when we get chocolate bunnies) On good friday, you get the day off school (if you happen to attend Catholic school, that is) and your mom makes you eat fishsticks. That's all that happens.

HOWEVER, it's been on the dang calendar my whole life and I don't care that it's there, since I don't pay attention to it anyway. I don't think it should be there but you know what, I have bigger deals in my life to worry about.

As to these people deciding to change the name of it - did you really NOT see a backlash coming? I mean REALLY?

#1, all these groups wanting to change the name of everything... "holiday tree", "spring bunny"... I'm convinced they are doing it just to be assholes. It isn't bothering you what it's called. If you don't celebrate the day then just go piss off and leave everyone else alone about it.

#2, all the people who piss and moan about taking the religious connotation away from things need to really give it a rest too. You're still free to observe, celebrate, pray, hunt for eggs, eat fishsticks, and put up nativity scenes on your lawn. But if you don't want the rest of the world taking that away from you, you might want to consider the happy medium you've been offered for years now. Put up your plastic jesus on YOUR lawn, not the one in front of the county courthouse.

Good grief. Between the one side that wants religion in nothing and the other side that wants it in everything, I'm standing here in the middle thinking that ALL y'all need to find better things to do.

Weird. What the hell is wrong with calling it Good Friday? You get a day off and it's good!

Mind you, Australia gets Good Friday and Easter Monday off; I don't hear anyone suggesting we change the names on our four-day long weekend, and this is a notably secular country. Some people just need to untwist their knickers and get over it.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

They're not wanted! You don't care because it doesn't MEAN anything to you. If it did, you might have a different attitude about it. I'm not huge on the holiday either since I'm pretty much a heathen these days, but it DOES mean a lot to others. What if you were told that you couldn't have confession anymore, because the thought of being alone with a priest offends people? Do you concede on that, or stand up for what you think is right?

With people that pull this shit, it just doesn't stop! If you give on something, they go after the next thing. Why should THEY give a fuck? There are about 85% of this country that WANTS the pledge of allegiance to keep "One Nation under God". These same people have no problem with prayer in public schools. It's the other 15% that want the rest of the country to say "Happy Holidays" at Christmas and bend to their needs. Fuck them! Why should the majority of this country change all of our beliefs and customs for a handful of assholes?

If you want a few people dictating what you should say or believe, than that's your prerogative. And I'll match your  with a  L.O.V.E spells LOVE BJG! :D

To the touters of "Separation of Church and STATE" It is not a law, by law, or constitution. It is a phrase taken from a private letter from Thomas Jefferson to a Baptist Convention. People carry it like a cross before them when they want to actually deprive people of rights.

Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791. Note

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

Excuse me, but what I said was BOTH sides of it need to give it a fricking rest. Neither side is ever going to give a millimeter and both sides are going to bitch to all hell about it until the end of time. There is way more time spent on these kinds of arguments than it's even worth. That was my point. Does changing what you call it make you believe in it less, or celebrate it less? NO. Isn't it about what's in your heart and about being a good person?

On the flip side, does letting Christians have all their holidays called whatever or using the word Christmas instead of a generic word like "holiday" really affect your life or your happiness? NO. Just don't celebrate it.

Seperation of church and state was coined from a letter that was written by Thomas Jefferson to a Baptist Convention. It is not a law, constitution, amendment, and has no power.

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is part of the Bill of Rights. The amendment prohibits the making of any law "respecting an establishment of religion", impeding the free exercise of religion, infringing on the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.

This is the law. Congress cannot establish a Church of the United States, make us all one religion, Catholic, Prodestant, Buddist, Satanist etc....

Congress also cannot institute laws that impede the free exercise of religion. I think when people want to take away celebrations they are impeding the free exercise of religion. They are by most acounts infringing on the first amendment with their church of state rants.........wich carry no legal weight at all.

I do not celebrate Good Friday in my religion. But I respect the rights of those who do. Political Correctness runs amok.

Sorry, I just realized I made this point a little earlier. It cut me off and I thought it did not post. This says more about it. :D

I agree. As I said, I don't celibrate it in my faith. But it does not bug me that some do. It is very personal to those who do. I don't get someone who does not care about Good Friday wanting to keep those who want to celibrate it from enjoying their religious expression. Let it be I say. I like chocolate bunny day myself! LOL! :D
