Foreigner on Lopez Tonight.

Postby Don » Tue Mar 30, 2010 2:19 pm

Does any one actually watch the George Lopez show? My kid used too watch his sitcom on NickAtNite. I've never really found him that funny, more like a poor man's Chico And The Man.
I will check it out tonight just to hear Foreigner. They always do well on these types of shows. They'll be singing In Pieces.

Here's a clip of "Feels Like The First Time" and "Hot Blooded" (let's hope it doesn't get removed). Sounds like a backtrack of the original recording with the new guy dubbing in the vocals! There is no way they could nail these studio backup vocals that perfectly:

He's totally unfunny. I've watched the show... it's an AARP-eligible hispanic guy trying to act like a brother. It's terrible and embarrassing.

But, thanks for the heads up. Definitely DVRing this bad boy.

Does anybody else here suspect that Jeff Pilson isn't playing a single note during their concerts. He only plays one string during every song and his fingers never move on the fretboard. When he isn't doing that he's running all over throwing his hair around or he has his back to the audience.

Kelly’s such a workhorse.
Every TV appearance he hits the notes and does the band proud.
Other aging rock acts, you’re always on tenterhooks waiting to see if the frontman has got his shit together.

Killer performance and what a great treat for the audience. They each got the new CD and 2 concert tickets to their upcoming show. Great promotion and a great performance.

Hmm, great vocal performance from Kelly. Unless one of those guys has an acoustic simulator on his guitar though, they seem to be getting some instrumental help... I thought the synths sounded a bit too spot-on too. Synths almost always sound a bit different live than they do on the record... here, they sound exactly the same.

Ok. That was a little rough.
Somewhat reliant on canned vocal help too.
Nice outro by Mick.

I thought Kelly did a great job. That's a BITCH of a song to sing from a range and phrasing standpoint... that chorus goes by REAL QUICK when you're singing it and it's high.

Foreigner is the little engine that could. They keep chugging along, getting spots on shows like this and GMA, touring non stop and getting a couple of songs on the AC-Chart. Sort of like Journey minus the human interest story.

I dunno...seemed he was really pushing his voice to the limit here.
In the first clip, he owned the material.
In this one, the song owned him.

Definitely pushing his voice, but I thought it worked for the song. It wasn't as smooth as the album, but I didn't really hear any egregious cracking, either. He had to sprinkle in a few melody changes, but none were too distracting.

Like I said, that's a deceptively hard song to sing. I'm not anywhere near Kelly's range and I'm also not really a singer, but even I can tell that the way that chorus is phrased, along with the notes used, makes it a real bitch to pull off. A lot of words very high in very little musical space = rough as hell.

Saw the show. Thought it sucked that George introduces the band play two of their biggest hits off their new album. Yes, there is a 2nd disc that features their hits, but those have Lou Gramm on vocals. And it IS a new album with NEW material. Just a lot of contradictions for the audience. Kelly did a good job, didn't sounds as much like Lou as I had heard he does. Seemed like his voice was a little worn but still pulled it off. But during Mick's guitar solo for Hot Blooded the fingers did not match the notes at all for one segment...

The one thing I do like about the Lopez show, he sure gives his audience a lot of stuff. And it is a BIG audience. That night he gave them all a DiGiorno's Pizza & Breadsticks, the new Foreigner CD AND tickets to the Foreigner show in the area!!

Great, great job. I really enjoyed In Pieces. Loved his vocals.

I am so sick of these late night shows putting on new acts that are so lackluster as far as talent. Letterman even had on that kid Justin the other night for tweens and teenyboppers. Are you kidding me? Those kids aren't watching Letterman. I'm sick of the musical appearances on a lot of these shows, so this was a treat. They need to bring back a lot of the great bands like this who are actually great musicians.
