I think Elton John would be a good halftime act (I can't remember if he is on the list).

Neal actually played that song during the Frontiers Tour in Japan. Perry sang Don't Fight It at the same shows.

They played No More Lies in the USA as well G- And Perry did the background vocals on it, and it sounded great. If anyone has the Frontiers and Beyond video, you can go look at the part where a fan fires a bottle towards the stage, and hits Schon right square on the dome- he was bleeding like Jana on a day 4 of her period.....Perry was hot; fired off some F bombs and threaten to kick the shit out of the douche who fired the bottle. IIRC, it was at the Meadowlands(inside arena, not Giants Stadium), and well, go watch it. It's in this video, about halfway through...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hbpl6Yn2Whg

Neal's a trooper for playin through that shit... that shit hurts.

There's something not very threatening about Perry telling the perpetrator to "Get the fuck up there" in his girly voice

yawn

1 1/2 hours sleep. pickin up a car at LAX to drive to San Diego for my outbound flight.

sleep when you're dead.

yawn.

Neal was ON FREAKIN FIRE when he hit the stage last night. He was so excited! as were we.

same setlist with the exception of 'something' new that they were working on. with vocals. Journey? NSB? no telling. but it was a bluesy rocker. gritty and dirty. completely cool.

Keith absolutely nailed the HSAS stuff. ohmygosh whatta voice. Yes, I saw the review that said he was weak. blah blah. trust me or not, as you wish, but the young man can flat out wail. I was amazed. the reviewer is fullaschutt. imho. the reviewer obviously has no knowledge of the solo catalogue. ergo the hostility in an effort to mask the ignorance. sheesh. He said he was surprised that I knew all of the music so well. ummm, yeah, I kinda do.

Miles is a shredder. astounding talent for one so young. I have a great vid of them shredding together. did that happen? I believe it most certainly did.

Prairie is a prince, hehe. It was an honor to finally see him perform. he is touring with Todd Rungren in upcoming weeks.

Marco is all that we wanted Marco to be. period. he will be touring with Ted Nugent next week. he asked that we please come out and see them. ok!

John is a mammoth keyboardist. wow. actually traded licks with Neal at one point. Oh, and Keith matched licks with Neal a little. it was not planned.

I only cried once, during Prayer for Peace. I suppose everyone expected me to be a mess but I was so grateful to be able to hear Neal solo and live that I was myself, hehe. I think I was on autopilot for the first show. but by the time it was 'doors open', I was ready to jump outta my skin. I choked down some dinner but left poor Valerie at the table as I was drawn inexplicably to the "pass the line' door.

the music, you say? I can't describe how over the top these live renditions were. the solos, on all instruments, were extended. it was an evening full of blues/rock jams. not for everyone's taste I suppose but I really liked it.

Fashion report. Neal in black black and black. perfect.

I hope you took notes-there will be a quiz later.

Can't really add much to this, it was a fantastic show and well worth not getting much sleep. It was cool hanging out with GB! Sorry I didn't get to meet you Deb, maybe next time.

That little girl (Rosalind?) that was singing with Miles and Jon during their opening act routine had it going on. There was a song she said she had written, that just totally impressed, where during the refrain, the crowd just totally caught the vibe and where doing the snap and clap with the music.

A Prayer for Peace was the standout because the sound was in stark contrast to the rest of the set list. Best part of show and the crowd responded appropriately.

Speaking of the crowd...

I think JSS had more people at his show in Tarzana than were in attendance last night, truly pathetic.
Remember those half filled theaters of 1,500 people or so SP played to in 94? It would have seemed like a stadium crowd compared to last night.

And then you have the casual fan, who "78 met in the restroom, lamenting because they hadn't played DSB yet.

The ticket guy said they were hoping for a couple hundred walk-ups but it never happened. On the bright side there wasn't a bad view in the house. After an hour of playing, the crowd thinned out the point where you had Six rows of people standing at the stage and then, nothing but space until you hit the tables around the bar area.

Great show, great MR people there for support. Really an outstanding effort by the entire band.

I think Neal told Deb that the band was pretty winded. I think touring isn't coming as easy at it used to for Schon, at least back to back nights.

Didn't Neal's other dates have good sized crowds? He can just skip L.A. when he goes out again.

I'm thinking the new song is for Neal's own album. The only way it becomes a Journey song is if Cain retires. Totally a kick ass tune with a definite HSAS vibe.

I forgot to mention that Miles and Jon did their set with no percussion. Still killer.
When Miles started strumming While My Guitar Gently Weeps on the ukelele? to open his set, the crowd was spellbound.
Just Fantastic.

It can't be for Neal's album because it has vocals. I think.

My super shuttle pulled up so I couldn't talk about Miles' set right then.

Valerie has the setlist--she is boarding right now so she can post it later.

That girl was INCREDIBLE!! what a talent!! we need to keep up with her.

Miles played his own song, Blues for Miles!! that was just the coolest!
John and Miles must study legit music cuz they played a scherzo. prolly college jury stuff. wait for Val for that tune name.

Miles makes it seem so effortless--and he really puts his 'whole self in' when he plays. I think he was amused that I was singing the PB and SS stuff so much--I caught several eye contacts and smiles from him when I glanced over. very sweet. I couldn't even imagine how these evenings could have been better but having Miles with him definitely kicked the whole thing up a couple of notches. And it wasn't a gratis thang either--that guy can shred!! and solo on the spot.

I got Marco and Neal to sign my Soul SirkUS poster from the Fox theater in Boulder, CO. It has been in a frame on my office wall since that show. Marco said he wanted one! not mine, dude. sorry. hehe. While we were waiting for Gunny to bring the car around, Neal popped out into the parking lot to catch his ride. I asked him to sign 2 pieces of marching band music for my students--the flute part for DSB and the Low brass part for AWYWI. he said we were crazy. duh, Neal.

that's all I got. 8)

Yeah, I think it's safe to say that John and Miles aren't playing it by ear. More like you Kip Winger types, getting properly schooled on music.

Music review: Guitarist Neal Schon journeys to El Rey Theatre

By BRUCE SMITH-PETERS - The Buzz
Posted: 04/01/2010 12:00:00 AM PDT

http://www.chicoer.com/entertainment/ci_14794874

CHICO -- Incredibly, guitarist Neal Schon began playing professionally at age 15 when, in the same week, he fielded offers from Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominoes and from Carlos Santana to become a part of his band. Choosing to stay in the Bay Area he opted for Santana and set in motion the rest of his career.

After a few years, he and keyboardist/vocalist Greg Rolie left Santana to start Journey as a jazzy progressive rock band, and it's been Schon's bread and butter ever since. It's not all he's done; he's collaborated with a host of musicians and released six solo recordings. But in the end he still comes back to Journey, even to the point of hiring a series of Steve Perry sound-a-likes to keep the franchise alive and profitable -- albeit on hiatus this year. The time off has provided Schon with the opportunity to dust off some old tunes and hit the road on his own, making a stop at Chico's El Rey Theatre on March 22.

This is the first time Schon has toured under his own name, and it gives him a chance to play some songs that he's never before performed live. He's assembled a pretty good group of players for this short, seven date tour, including founding Journey drummer Prairie Prince (The Tubes), fellow Soul SirkUS band mate Marco Mendoza (Whitesnake, Ted Nugent) on bass, vocalist Keith St. John (Burning Rain, Montrose), as well as Schon's son Miles, who shares his father's curly locks and guitar licks, and keyboardist John Varn. the tightest but that might be expected with such a limited project.

The two-hour, 20 song set opened and closed with early Journey tunes, the instrumental "Khoutek" from the band's 1975 debut and "I'm Gonna Leave You" off the next year's "Look to the Future," respectively. The only other acknowledgement of his primary gig was "The Time" from the rather obscure 2002 EP "Red 13." A lone nod to his time in Santana came during the title track from his 2005 disc "I On U," which flowed into the instrumental lines of "Black Magic Woman," and featured Mendoza performing a conga-like scat that would have made both Ella Fitzgerald and percussionist Michael Carabello proud.

Fully one-third of the set, though, came from his 1999 release "Piranha Blues," with its late '60s classic blues-rock vibe on songs like "Walkin' Out the Door," "Whiskey, Women and Blues," and "Hole in My Pocket," with Mendoza handling the vocals. That feel for the era extended to covers of Procol Harem's "Whiter Shade of Pale" (also done by HSAS, Schon's mid-'80s side project with Sammy Hagar, Kenny Aaronson, and Michael Shrieve, his former Santana band mate), Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground," again with Mendoza behind the mic, and Led Zepplin's "Immigrant Song," which showed St. John has the affectations of Robert Plant, but not nearly the chops. It was made worse by vocal feedback that turned the song into a muddy distorted mess.

For the encore the band came out to perform the blues standard "Goin' Down," an unintentional comment on the size of the audience, which started at about 200 but had dwindled to a die hard faithful of perhaps half that number.

To be fair, no one in the crowd knew exactly what to expect, although many it seemed were hoping for a nice night of Journey songs. When it became clear that wasn't going to happen, the crowd began to thin out as many of the college students, teenagers with their parents, and 40-something couples on date night left a little disappointed.

Still, the band, and St. John in particular, was impressed by the devoted and enthusiastic hard core fan base that remained pumping their fists to "Valley of the Kings/Giza" from HSAS. Most had crowded at the stage to get a rare up-close look at the stadium guitar hero's incredibly fast fingers. But for all his speed there wasn't much soul to his shredding solos, and certainly nothing with the feel or emotion of Santana or Clapton's slow hand. Instead, he's taken his own journey to guitar greatness.:D

:) :)

I had some mixed feelings about this review... It's a little harsh to compare an 18-year-old to Robert Plant.

Thanks for the details even while running on fumes, Sistah; you rock.

I am so, so sorry I didn't get to make one of these shows; sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

What an awesome treat to be able to go to one of these shows... I saw a blog or something where one of the people who went said they blew the roof off of the Fillmore. Am hoping we get a vid or something from any of these shows... Thanks for the review, Deb!!
