The 'Cher Effect'....

Postby S2M » Wed Apr 07, 2010 11:24 pm

Lately I've been hearing a lot of pop songs using the effect that Cher made popular in "Believe"....that robotic voice effect.

I first remember hearing the effect in Roger's, I Want to Be Your Man...although not exactly like the Cher Effect, more like Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer opening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VEdPCvcOcc

They even made a HILARIOUS beer commercial using it.....

But in music i think it is a cheesy, cornball effect.....its like if every group decided to write a song using the kazoo...

What do you think?

It sucks!! almost every fucking song these new artists release has that annoying effect on them,,,, The only good thing I like about it is the beer commercial,,,,
I guess its very neccessary for the new "artists" to enhance their vocal abilities with these "tools", since their real voice would suck ass .....

It's just AutoTune with extreme parameters. Very gay and hackneyed at this point.

Any artist who uses that effect should be immediately and painfully executed.

But without it, we wouldn't have GLEE.

;)

Hate autotune. Many 'singers' have based their career around it. Taylor Swift for one.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Taylor Swift is one I thought of regarding this. I know some people raved about her performance with Stevie Nicks, but I thought she sounded awful, I cringed more than once, and wanted to hear only Stevie, who of course sounded great.

Oh was reminded today of Pink when I heard this song at work, that I actually like a lot, and I usually can't stand anything on the radio anymore, lol. Doesn't sound like she uses that "effect" stuff, and just has a nice voice on her own:

I really like her! And she always sounds good live. She's one of the real ones I think. I finally just got her album. This is a nice song!
