One other person on here mentioned it and called it tin like, and they are right. But no one else on MR seems to notice that. Even some of the boring songs I could enjoy with Steve Perry's great tone, but that upper register hollow sound really bothers my ears on so many of the songs. I try not to notice it but I can't help it. It's one reason why I don't enjoy listening to the whole album even on a nice rainy day, which that CD is suited for. His vocals did not sound like that on ROR.
Example of the phenomenon you are talking about? Give a song and preferably a certain part of the vocal, too. I shall listen and give my take.
Pretty much all of MOL shows a really fragile, hollow voice. I Can See It IN Your Eyes, too. It's much more evident on the "rock" songs. His power and ability to "lift off," as Herbie put it, was gone.
Oh for Christ's Sakes!!!! There was enough there for NEAL is GOD to GO AND HIT THE STUDIO FOR TBF!!!
He was the fucking "VOICE" of Journey...even Schon knows it!!!!
Whatever!!! you all can say what you want!!! AND THE ONES WHO LOVE THE VOICE ARE DELUSIONAL??
The ones who dissect TBF are the ones who don't GET it....ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!

Slow your roll, Loon Sistah. There's no denying that by the time TBF was recorded Perry's voice had undergone some changes - and not necessarily for the better. I think "fragile" "tin-like", and "hollow" are all adequate descriptions of his vocals on that album.
