And for severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis, Benadryl is NOT the primary drug of choice, that's just an antihistamine and is only used in adjunct with a severe allergic reaction, along with steroids. For someone prone to an anaphylactic reaction, epinephrine is THE primary drug of choice first, and that person should carry an Epi-pen, because in anaphylaxis, Benadryl alone isn't and WON'T be good enough.

I was just thinking I should've put a disclaimer like that on my post. I should carry an epi-pen but I don't. I wasn't meaning to give medical advice. Thanks, Melissa. 8)

Yeah you definitely should if you have an allergy to something that causes respiratory distress like that. I just have enough experience with severe allergic reactions, from my patients to my own allergy, to know it's just VERY important for people to know about anaphylaxis and what to do. I have a Class 6 allergy to shellfish, so I carry one too. The newer ones are even easier to use, but they still only buy a little time, in a reaction like that, that person still needs immediate advanced medical attention.

I know you're right. I have severe reactions to peanuts and sunflower seeds. A lesser reaction to shellfish and fish. I've been getting by by taste testing a tiny sample of foods that I'm unsure about. I'll feel a tightening of my breathing from a tiny bite immediately, then I know to avoid that food. It is pretty risky to not have the pen though. I'll get one. Thanks again for the advice. :)

Postby MBPL » Sun Apr 11, 2010 2:24 am

GIJim, what...the...helll?! Well, I hope by today you are well tended to and treated for whatever gave you that reaction. Sounds far too severe to speculate. Perhaps you should cut back on meatless Soul Food Gumbo and Chitlin flavored Tofu!!!! HAR!!! *snort* Feel better soon!

Ginger: Thanks, dear.

Behshad: Yea, my co-worker wanted Pakistani Indian food. Far too spicy for my digestive system which means I spent the rest of the night at home listening to my tummy do cartwheels.

For those of you working on the weekends, and I always forget about that as I have always had typical Sat and Sun off, have a good one just the same. I hope you make it through these next two days with a flourish! :D MBPL

Hey everyone, thanks for the advice. I finally got to be seen, and she's not sure what it is. I don't normally have any reactions to anything. I do have sensitive skin, but it's probably been 13 or 14 years since I've had any reaction to anything. The last time it happened was when I stumbled into a nest of fire ants. By the time I realized it, I had probably over a hundred bites before I could get them off of me!

I have no clue what brought this on, and she said to her it looked like maybe poison Ivy. :? She gave me a serious prescription for Steroids and said it's going to make me hyper and aggressive. I'll apologize in advance if it affects my posting!

I went in there today wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I figured that she'd be able to see what I had by looking at my arms and legs, but she insisted that I take my shirt off. I think she just wanted to check me out!

Anyways, thanks again, and I am finally feeling some relief. The downside to the prescriptions is that I have to avoid the sun for two weeks! Does she not know how obsessed I am with landscaping my yard?!!! Oh well, I guess it'll give me more time to work on the album. Have a great weekend.

Thanks, I appreciate it! I still feel swelling in my throat, but I guess the steroids will take a while to effect me. I'm not having any difficulty breathing, just a little tightness in swallowing. Maybe I should take advantage of the steroids, and try to get a little pumped up!
