Peter Steele (Type O Negative, lead singer) dies at 48

Postby dabstudio » Fri Apr 16, 2010 9:34 am

According to latest sources Peter Steele, the towering front man of ‘Type O Negative,’ died last evening from heart failure. He was just 48.

The New York based band known as ‘Type O Negative’ was started in early 1980’s as a heavy metal band from Brooklyn. The band was commonly viewed as a gothic metal band but just to grab more attention and to take off the label of ‘gothic’, the band has also incorporated elements of doom metal. Type O Negative was best known for its dramatic lyrical accent on themes of depression, romance and death from which they has earned a new nickname “The Drab Four”. The band enjoyed huge success with 1993’s Bloody Kisses and gained an enormous fan following with seven studio albums and concert DVDs. The last album they produced is 2007’s ‘Dead Again’.

Peter Steele, known as the towering musician and the front man for the band, appeared on the cover page of Playgirl, a popular magazine and posed completely naked for the magazine during Type O Negative’s time in the limelight. He was famous for suffering from depression and some issues with body cruelty.

Last night just before midnight, TV VJ Mistress Juliya’s posting to her Twitter account confirmed that Peter Steele, the 48 years old musician had passed away. She twitted “he passed of heart failure today. Just spoke to Kenny”, but prior this actually happened, late on Wednesday night.

This really is a huge loss for the metal community. I was never hugely into Type O, but have only recently started to truly appreciate what they bring to the table. They really are a one-of-a-kind band, and amazing at what they do. R.I.P. Peter, you will be missed.

Wow... uncool. I met him once during the Queensryche "Promised Land" tour. Funny story -- I ook a date to the concert and we smuggled in some alcohol. When the show ended we were quite drunk and decided to raid the buses to try to meet Queensryche. I had an idea and put my ring on the girl's left hand backwards so it looked like a wedding band. Knocked on a bus and a guy answered, so I told him it was our anniversary and my wife really wanted to meet the band. He kinda smiled and said, "Hold on for a sec"... I was like, SWEET!!!! We're going to meet Geoff Tate! A half minute later the tour bus door opens and Peter Steele himself greets us with "Happy Anniversary." We totally got the wrong bus, but tripped out about it. He was really cool, shook our hands and never noticed we were lying thru our teeth.

I'll never forget that. Sad to see him go.

I guess he would to you

Sad story. In the past 10 years the guy really sunk deeper into
depression and had bouts with alcohol. He went fom this towering,
muscular, beast-on-the-bass to an overwieght caraciture of himself.
Great songwriting, catchy hooks, and darkly, hilarious lyrics.
Never heard the last album but 1996's Ocrober Rust is a masterpiece and
2003's Life is Killing Me was pretty intense as well.
Welcome to Terminus... You hungry?

Hey dude, don't blame me. That's the danger when you try to cram something like that down your throat. (You left yourself wide open for that one!)

A real tall assclown at that, dude was 6'7". Listened to the music and watched some interviews, the dude wasn't one of the sharpest knifes in the drawer. I think he was some how related to the govorner of California though. And didn't he play the role of "Jaws" in Moonraker?
