I saw Heart Fri and didn't pay that much, but would have~ for Heart!!

It's a smart business decision to package with a well known female singer and go into markets with a heavy Filipino population and do the intimate theatre gig (where the wealthy Filipino Americans will have the money to pay for those tickets).....As for Arnel resting his voice, I don't believe it was the act of singing that was fatiguing his voice, moreso the act of singing Journey songs, right?

Arnel has a huge following right now. You can't go into any place and ask Filipino's in there if they know who Arnel Pineda is and they don't know, because every Filipino I've asked know exactly who he is, where he came from, and love him. Yet only three years ago, I asked a number of my friends and co-workers if they knew who Arnel Pineda was, they gave me a blank stare and said they had no idea who I was talking about.
So yeah, I can completely see Arnel drawing huge numbers of fans regardless. Hell, Rip aint even a Filipino but he's about the biggest fan of Arnel's I've ever seen.

She knew "Don't Stop Believin" ...but was not familiar w/Journey ...

I'm sure most know who he is but that's a bit different then actually being a fan. Don't get ahead of yourself with his popularity here in the states. Without any homegrown success, he is just another cover singer to a lot of Pinoys. Most of my Filipino coworkers were into him when I brought it up about him being in Journey but that was more about patriotism than fandom. Six months after I gave them boot DVDs of the Chile show, they were asking for boots of the Steve Perry era shows from the Frontiers and Escape tours, as that is the versions they enjoyed listening to when growing up. They wanted the versions they hear playing five or six times a day on the office radio.
Has he gained fans here? Of course. But until he hits it big with an original album in the Philippines or Radio stops playing Classic Journey here, he is just another member of the band that sounds like Steve Perry.
Let him do a solo tour without Lani or Rachel and THEN tell my how many tickets those shows sell?
I wish the guy success as he seems to be doing a lot of this to benefit his charity but he just isn't all that much of a presence in the entertainment business as people make him out to be.
I end up watching TFC more than I really want and I can say with certainty that the old favorites (Martin, Ogie, Sharon, Regine) along with Sarah, Jed and others still rule the roost. AP, like Charice is tolerated but is more or less on the outside looking in, when you watch how they are factored into these shows. When they make it in the P.I. , then you will see them gain more fame with the Pinoys here in the states. Hell, Pacman actually gets more love as a singer then Pineda does, how fucked up is that?
I think him not being able to sing Journey songs whenever he wants is hampering his career actually. He's the lead singer of Journey but when he goes onto these Filipino T.V. shows, he can sing anything but the songs he is now famous for (with the exception of Open Arms or DSB every once in awhile). We understand why, but for people who have had never had scruples about singing covers of other artists songs (and probably never worried about paying royalties either), I think this is a strange situation for his fellow countrymen to see him in.
Maybe, I should be his manager. At least crank out a single in Tagalog, while the iron is hot. The band isn't doing anything, three months to do one song seems doable. Anything to get him on Filipino radio as a solo artist since that is place he wants to be when his career with Journey ends.

Thanks, Sushi! I've believed in Arnel since Nora first posted those YouTube clips of him in '07. A few months later a group
of us are standing just a few feet from him at that private RE/MAX show 2 days before the Planet Hollywood debut. It was kinda unreal, having followed the story from speculation to confirmation to, umm... Revelation!
It's been a few years since then and I've had a great time getting to know him. I'll always be a fan but seeing him
perform is more like watching a friend living his dream these days.

Neal doesn't give 2 shits what Arnel does when he's outside of Journey. If anything, he's been pretty supportive. He blogged about the flooding and flew down there for the relief concert. By all accounts, the Neal Schon you knew and the sober and more focused Neal Schon are seemingly 2 completely different people.Rockindeano wrote:You may all scoff at that, but I know that guy and he won't like it one bit.
Last time we heard shit like this from you, you were blindsided and he sent you and your Christmas carolling chum packing and went and found a singer that could keep his mouth shut.
Rockindeano wrote:There is absolutely no sense of reality regarding Journey and more pointedly, Pineda.
But there was when you were barking how the concert you heard with Guarini fronting the band was better than anything Perry ever did live?

The Sushi Hunter wrote:You should get to know the rest of the original AMO Band members just as much as your getting to know Arnel. They are all great people to be around and were all really outstanding performers and musicians back in the day. Never a dull moment being with them both on and off the stage as I recall as though that 20+years since then is as though it was only yesterday.

I had front row center and, while there was a really nice crowd, it wasn't "packed." I'd say between 7 hundred and a thousand people.

It's been a ton of fun man, so thanks. Hey... I can't imagine any world where Steve Perry would invite me to hang out in his tour bus or hotel room and shoot the bull at 3am after a concert, LOL. Arnel just has a way of radiating positive energy to everyone around him, especially when he sees you in the front row at a concert. On or offstage, he's just a really down-to-earth, appreciative guy who has a way of making people feel like they're the only person in the room. That's one of the reasons I don't analyze or review his performances so much -- positive energy makes for more than enough of a good time for me.

Is he allowed? Neal only played songs that aren't in the current set list. Won't Arnel be "cracking the stone", singing Journey songs without Journey?
