Really a simplistic reading of history. Ever hear of perestroika and glasnost? How about George Bush Sr? Reagan's willingness to engage in talk with Gorbachev, by the way, was hated by most conservatives. He was accused of going soft and talking to our enemies.

Reagan was guided by principles and not polls. Probably the last president to do so.

Hey TNC, you fucker, I disagree with just about everything politics-wise with you and we both know that, but I couldn't agree more with you on music. Quit wasting your talents in these bullshit political threads and talk more music. This place needs it

Why not throw a life preserver to the flailing, soon-to-be drowned carcass of the GOP? They got caught with their paints down - again - and people are angry about it. Everyone with a brain cell knows they've had Wall Street in their back pockets for years. They didn't want to reform Wall Street, but now they're trying to suggest their threat of a filibuster changed the game.

The fact is, if they hadn't gotten on board, they would have paid an even dearer price in November. When will the neo-cons learn?

Under Clinton, 49.3% of the budget was allocated towards defense.

Under Bush, that number "rose" to 49.6%.

So much for the idea that Bush's solar-system record deficits were caused by an "increase" in military spending.

Under Dubbya, budgets for these departments were slashed by an average of 42% from the fiscal years 1993-2000:

Labor
Veterans Affairs
Corps of Engineers
Other Defense—Civil Programs
Environmental Protection Agency
National Aeronautics and Space Administration
National Science Foundation
Small Business Administration
Agriculture

Also, spending for the Executive Office of the President went from an average of 0.06% under Clinton to an average of 1.3% under King George II.

I found it most interesting that the biggest percentile increase was for:

Housing and Urban Development

Keep in mind the GOP had a majority in the House and Senate was well as a Republican President between 2001 and 2007.

Well... we kind of need poor people to do crappy jobs like custodial work, garbage pickup, food service, etc... who will do the dirty jobs if everyone is busy trying to leave them, not to mention if they even could get a better job without an education they probably can't afford. I'm not sure that a revolving door of trade workers on their way to ~the dream~ is the most productive to the trades. I agree that there's a lot of entitlement with welfare but I don't agree that it's easy for people below the poverty level to just move on up in today's world, especially if they can't afford the education required, which they certainly will be less able to do if they're taxed more than the rich. Hell, my parents spent thousands to get me a bachelor's degree and all I ever hear is how a bachelor's degree means nothing and I've gotta get a masters to compete (thousands more bucks!!). No one WANTS to be poor but many people are just stuck where they are. I don't think we should punish them for that. IMO.

I had the munchies at 2:30 AM, so of course I had to check in here.

I know a lot of people who make a lot of money but aren't particularly talented or hard-working. Not that those traits typify the majority of high-income earners (and most of my clients are), but still...teachers work their asses off and don't make diddly. Conversely, I know people who have inherited multi-million dollar businesses from their parents and don't work more than 20 hours a week because everything was already in place for them, and they're just figureheads. Friends with 3.8 GPA's who happened to pick the "wrong" majors wind up working for $12 an hour, and Finance majors with 2.2's get a break into the right firm and make $100,000 a year.

STORY OF MY LIFE. I make $12/hour at a part time job I took out of desperation after having been fully unemployed for 7 months last year :( I am not using my major whatsoever. Unfortunately I listened to the people who said "no one really uses their major in their job" and "people just look at the school you went to" so I studied something that interested me rather than something practical...

Although being a UCLA grad was a major factor in me getting my part time job, at least! haha

As always, fair points, Sarah. But tell me this ... how smart does one really have to be to realize that it's gonna be a motherfucker to raise 6 kids while holding down a job as a landscaper??? The vast majority of the poor in this country are poor because it's self inflicted. Seriously, do Mexicans have an unwritten rule that says you have to have at least 3 kids by the time you're 25??? I marvel at teenagers in my predominantly hispanic neighborhood (70%) pushing a stroller, often times, when they're just out of high school. And I swear, it seems to be the norm ... same in the majority of California I'm sure. Same with ghetto blacks and white trash. But Mexicans, from what my experience has been/seen, are far and away the worse with destroying any sort of decent future by being baby machines.

Basically yes. And typically they don't move out of their parents' house until they are married. I kind of think the babymaking has a lot to do with most Latinos being Catholic and never learning/encouraging safe sex.

My bf's family is pretty traditional Mexican. His family illegally immigrated when he was young, at least 20 years ago. (edit: they always paid taxes though and they're legal now) At first all 5 of them lived in a 1-bedroom apartment, but now they're doing pretty well for themselves. The dad's just a landscaper (of course haha) but they own several rental properties in Vegas too. I'm learning a lot about the cultural norms being around them.

Thanks for the irreverent comment, Senator McCarthy. When are you due back at the Tydings Committee hearing?

Anyway, have fun at the skinhead rally tonight. I've heard Jon Voigt is bringing his G2. What are you bringing?

No comment on Mrs. Obama being a "birther"? Just like you had no comment on Queen Pelosi flying her family across the country repeatedly at great expense to the taxpayers. Yet have the gall to bitch like a little bitch about what Palin does with her money.

I never said I wasn't irked at Pelosi's arrogance and spendthriftness.

You need to look up the word "hyperbole," take your Prozac, and get back to me in the morning once the moonshine wears off.

I'm sure Palin's contributors will at least raise a bushy eyebrow or two when they find out none one red cent has been given to the campaigns of Republicans battling Democrats in the House and Senate this fall. Wouldn't you?

That you are a racist is beyond a doubt.

Hold your fire.
The last right wing accusation of Pelosi's excessive flight demands turned out to be just another chain email hoax.
There's always the chance that this time could be different, but given their track record, I wouldn't give them the benefit of the doubt.

TNC all that factcheck site does is try to condone it by saying "Hastert did it." I don't have time to check the snopes site, I have to get back to work.... The lying, plagiarist was bitching about Palin (a private citizen) spending money donated to her PAC. I just gave him and example of how our government officials blow through OUR money like it's nothing.

Nice try, GoebbelsFan.

Factcheck.com is a neutral site - did you bother to read the article?

Well, you'd better get back to tending the register at 7-11.

Actually no, sorry to have to correct you again, but I've never worked at 7-11. Which is why I can't confirm the rumour about your girl hanging out front whoring herself out to score a fix. LOL

So we have it that you're a confirmed liar (ala Professor Phil Jones), plagiarist (ala Jason Blair), and now a race card thrower (would you prefer to be called Rev. Jackson or Rev. Sharpton?)

Not so. Other distinctions are made, including judicial watch's dishonest tactic of charging Pelosi for costs incurred by delegations upwards of 100 people.

I really don't have any feelings toward Pelosi either way. As Speaker, she seems to be rounding up the votes she needs pretty succesfully. For all the cries of sexism by professional right wing victims like Palin and Carrie Prejean, it is Pelosi, who is easily the most discriminated woman in politics. I don't care which way you vote, belittling a 70 yr old woman's face is pretty low.

Boo fuckin hoo all of you - public figures are fair game for any kind of criticism, from appearance to intellect to whatever's in between. Their (non-public figure) family members should be left out, however.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go help my dad, Janet Reno, move a refrigerator.

I stand by my comments 100%. Palin and Carrie Prejean accused the oogedy-boogedy "liberal media" of sexism, NOT one melodic rock website registered in another continent out of hundred of billions of websites. I know you think cutting and pasting op-eds is a valuable public resource and somehow, someway, is singlehandedly keeping America from falling into socialism, but it’s simply not the case. Nobody gives a shit about you or me. Get a grip, FF.

Nope... only becasue the media will only cover it on the surface... not underneath it...

However, if the tea party people throw a bunch of fits this summer about Goldman Sachs during their events and enough thousands or millions accross the nation start figuring that Obama has been in bed with Goldman Sachs... then... it might be worse than enron... Obama says he knows nothing about the funds....and they are seperate... but then why is a lawyer for the firm getting visit the whitehouse card... just saying...

Anyone not blinded by partisan rage or semi-educated could tell it was a desperate hail-mary distraction from an increasingly desperate GOP campaign.
