Why Are People Addicted To Coffee??

Postby Everett » Fri Apr 30, 2010 10:25 am

I've had some once and it was the most disgusting thing i've ever tasted in my life. So why do so many people drink this stuff? When i need energy i just drink a mountain dew.

I think Mountain Dew has caffeine in it also. I began my coffee drinking habit when I was in the military. Working twelve hours a day and everyone around me who had been in for years before me had a serious coffee drinking habit, which helped rub off onto me. For years I drank two gallons of coffee per twelve hour shift. I knew this for a fact because we had a percolator style coffee maker that held one gallon of coffee and I would brew two of them per shift and drink them myself. While I was in the band in the Philippines after getting out of the military, coffee was great every morning, was like a liquid meal, filled me up like it was food. Times were tough being in a band there, so much of the time had no money for food, but always were able to get some coffee from somewhere. Returning to the US and joining the workforce, I would drink about 20 large cups of coffee per day, starting when I woke up to the time I got home from work. I'd then wash all that coffee down with a two liter bottle of diet Coke or diet Pepsi.

Coffee is a great social event, much like smoking is to smokers. You get together with a bunch of friends and co-workers and even strangers and you sit around and enjoy drinking coffee. It's hot and warms you up in the winter time, and is refreshing in the summer time.

Two years ago I went cold turkey and completely stopped 100% all my coffee and diet Coke & diet Pepsi intake. Had a serious headache for about a week from not getting the caffeine that my body was so used to getting for so many years. But now I can get up out of bed on the turn of a dime and have plenty of energy. Plus I got my nice white teeth back after they had turned a few shades of brown and I don't miss that horid coffee breath and the buildup of shit on my teeth. I would brush my teeth three and four times per day back then which wouldn't really help much at all. I don't even like the smell of coffee now.

So these are some of the reasons why coffee is so popular.....and some of the reasons I'm glad I gave it up for good.

Enjoying a cup of coffee while reading this story? Well, keep on sipping because a new study shows that coffee has health benefits.

A study released today from the University of Scranton revealed that coffee is America's No. 1 source of antioxidants, an important compound that protects your body from disease.

"Antioxidants are your army to protect you from the toxic free radicals, which come from breathing oxygen and eating sugar, that start chronic diseases," said Dr. Joe Vinson, the chemistry professor who led the coffee study. "Antioxidants help stave off cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke."

The study ranked black tea as second source of antioxidants, and bananas as third, in the average American diet.

Americans consume, on average, more than eight ounces of coffee a day, which translates into more than a large cup of coffee a day, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. So saying coffee is the No. 1 source of antioxidants in America is like saying that white bread is the No. 1 source of fiber -- there are better fiber sources out there, but white bread is the one we eat the most.

"Coffee contains a lot of antioxidants and we drink a lot of coffee," said Vinson, who has been working on the study for 10 years.

Antioxidants are plant-derived -- as is coffee -- and plants in general are good are you, he added.

There are many sources of antioxidants and "variety is key," because different sources provide different types of antioxidants, Vinson said. He also recommended people drink tea and red wine (in moderation).

A Cup a Day May Keep the Doctor Away

For those who are excited about coffee as a source of antioxidants, Vinson recommends drinking one cup of joe a day.

"It's the optimum I see that has a benefit for the heart," he said.

He also offered some advice for coffee drinkers.

"Spread your coffee drinking throughout the day," he said.

"Caffeine raises your blood pressure, so if you are going to drink a lot of coffee, choose decaf," he added.

Decaf has the same antioxidant benefits as regular coffee

No health issues at all. Actually I think it was good for me because I was constantly flushing my system by pissing every 45 minutes to an hour throughout the entire day, nothing could stay in my system long enough to get me sick maybe. Let's just say the last time I missed work for being sick was in 93'. No rapid heart beat or anything like that either. The only thing it did do to me though was just make my teeth brown, but that is gone now and my teeth are back to being really white like they were when I was a teenager. Funny cause when I run into ex-coworkers and I smile, they completely stare at my teeth and ask me what I did to get my teeth so white. I tell them I quit coffee and they are shocked that doing so would have such an impact on the whiteness of my teeth.

My wife loves the caramel machiato at Starbucks when we are in Japan. I'm not so sure if there is mocha in it or not since I've not tasted it myself. Our daughter gets the regular hot chocolate and I always get the white hot chocolate. They make the hot white chocolate so good there, I tried to get it at Starbuck's in the U.S. but it tasted like shit, they don't have it on the menu in the US but they still tried to make one for me when I asked. Obviously they blew it big time since they don't have experience making it because its a drink that is not offered here.

I only like the good stuff, grind my own beans, to me Folgers etc is not coffee, it is like drinking brewed saw dust. I tend to really like medium to bold blends from Central America the most.

Mountain Dew has a lot of caffeine in it, making it a popular study aid during finals, but it also is high in sugar calories. I prefer Pepsi, but because of the calories and hazards of high fructose corn syrup, I've started brewing my own iced tea. I never drink plain coffee either, but I make mochas with Dutch cocoa, milk, and my espresso maker. Basically it's cocoa with a caffeine kick and I have to limit it to one a day since it's like a dessert.

If you want to wake up in a hurry, try 'Stay Alert' gum - it's a caffeinated gum used by the special forces. I have it in cinnamon (which tastes pretty bad, but you only chew for 5 minutes) and it works without making you jittery. I have to try another flavour when I run out of cinnamon - hopefully the spearmint isn't so bad.

No, it's an aquired taste, like most bitter things - coffee, tea, beer, wine.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

And I think people start drinking coffee because it's one of those things associated with being a grownup, as generally you have to be older before you're allowed to drink it - though I see a lot of teenagers at Starbucks in the mall acquiring the taste earlier. When you start working too, it's socially acceptable, usually free, and readily available. Don't get into the habit - there is nothing wrong with water and many of the people at the last place I worked didn't drink coffee either. We weren't allowed to have beverages (not even bottles of water) out in front of customers as it didn't look professional, but we could have them if we were back in the lab - my coworkers got a kick out of me showing up with a big Slurpee.
