I found an HSAS DVD in a bin at the Dallas Guitar Festival ... rockin' good stuff!

It is good stuff. My point is about regurgitating older material into a song like Open Arms instead of writing something completely new to use as a patch. Doing the re-records seems to have made the band lazy, artistically.. what next, dropping the Winds Of March solo into After All These Years and calling it new and refreshing?

I have to have faith that the band will bring totally new arrangements to the songs that they want to extend this time around and just dump a few more ballads off of their setlists instead of trying to muscle them up.

I've got at lot of faith in this one. They're not trying to just get an album out there, they want to make it good. Of course, if they work too hard on it we might not see it. Creative differences are good, but hopefully they work it out.

Andrew, you just let the cat outta the bag! Neals concept album is about an aging rock band stuck in a rut and determined to rock! The 1st 7 tracks are all old Journey ballads played backwards at 3X speed. The next five tracks will be the result of the fictitious keyboard players nervous break down and subsequent revenge on the band for rocking him into oblivion by sneaking his 5 remakes of "somewhere over the rainbow into the final master.

Anyone think we'll see this album released by the end of this year? I kinda doubt it....I'd guess probably by March 2011?

Arnel was just in the SB the other day. He was asked if there will be some ballads, and he said there will be but not the usual and hoped we would like it. I kind of thinking they will be more edgy like Walking Away From the Edge or such.

Hmm... a pop type song might be Journey's version of a ballad on this release then. How was Journey described before? A Pop band with rock sensibilities.

7 to 5 ratio of Rockers to Ballads? I could live with that.

Better ratio than on TBF or even Arrival!

And it's not like Journey does BAD ballads!
“How did that sound?”

I don't consider Walking Away From the Edge a pop type song. I just think the subject matter will be deeper or darker than the typical love ballads they do.

Or sexier, like Kiss Me Softly. That will suit another side of Neal's playing.

I think the songs may have a quicker tempo, like in the style of WICTL by Foreigner.

Does a slow tempo song automatically mean it is a ballad?

I say no.
For me TBF only had two ballads, but a few too many slow tempo tunes.

Thoughts?

As for the new record, I hope there are ZERO ballads. I just skip over them anyway. Consider them filler.

According to Arnel, there might be 12 songs in the new album.

Btw, Arnel heard that Steve Perry is releasing an album.

1984Tigers, here is my thought earlier in this thread. I think you and I are on the same track:

jrnyman28 wrote:Hollywood, I think you may be confusing "slow or quiet" songs with "ballads". "Ballads", at least in Journey's case, are the much maligned sickeningly saccarine (sp) sweet lovey-dovey gobbledy-gook dredge that Jon Cain loves. It has worked in the past, but it has been done WAY too much. But give me a song like "Walking Away From The Edge" and I am all in. Not a "ballad", but a slow, incredibly emotional and powerful song. THAT is what has been missing lately!! Like "Mother, Father" or "Winds Of March"!!

The latest from KS

Two more full weeks to go with Journey in the studio here in San Francisco - we have eleven tracks - a few finished except for the backing vocals. Very cool tracks - very melodic, musical, very rocking - a little pop here and there, but far less than before.

Cain will wait until Neal is taking a break, off riding his motorcycle, and quietly slip a couple ballads in. There has to be a couple or it just wouldn't be Journey. :D
