How do you use an iPod?

Postby TRAGChick » Fri May 14, 2010 10:50 am

Seriously....

Mark just got home from a Business Dinner; he won an iPod.

I want to use it....but don't know how.

What do I do?

Have a 9-12 year old kid train you. :D

A lot of these gadgets baffle me too, but my 9 year old niece is a wiz at these things.

Download and install iTunes. http://www.apple.com/itunes

You can buy music from the itunes store, or you can insert a music CD into your computer and itunes will import that into your music collection. Then you can connect the ipod and copy the music to it. Itunes is really easy to use.

First you need to sign over your soul to Steve Jobs, then you can get play with your toy.

Ipods are easy to learn how to use. Trust me...I had no idea how to use one but went out one day, purchased one, brought it home, plugged it into my computer and "BLAM" was downloading all my albums into it in no time at all without any problems. Seriously, I've had more difficulty hooking up a new home entertainment system.

What kind of iPod? A touch? Nano? Shuffle? They all have different setups... but they all use iTunes to sync with your computer's music.

It's not hard Nora - even I figured it out! Load CDs into iTunes, copy them to iPod, attach headphones, and rock out.

(tip: DON'T use the eject button at the bottom right corner of the iTunes window after you copy things onto the iPod - only eject the device using the eject button from the Left column in iTunes, next to where it shows your iPod connected. the one at the bottom right will wipe out everything from the iPod. I don't know why. but it's happened to me 3 times.)

Yeah, I was going to say that too, but didn't because I thought I'd get hammered by someone on here for saying it.

I have a question. How do you transfer your iTunes from one computer to the other?

I have a question too- how do you program itunes so that you can have 2 different ipods on there with their own stuff instead of both ipods having to share ALL the same stuff unless you go through and uncheck all the things you don't want on one from the other? Does that make sense?

Personally I use a removable hard drive. You can copy the files to another computer.

It does, and I don't know either... :?

These issues are why I actually prefer a device that just lets you drag and drop the files you want..but that's probably just the geeky software programmer in me wanting to control the hardware / software... :)

You just move the files... but you can only move your library setup, playlists, etc (the iTunes folder in My Music) if the second computer has the exact same file paths, or you could probably edit the paths in the xml file that stores your library info...

Just make a playlist for each of them and put whatever tracks you want in each. When you plug in your iPod, uncheck "sync all" and choose the appropriate playlist to sync.

That's what I have, but once the files are associated with iTunes, I cannot load them with another copy of iTunes...

That's what I was thinking as well...and was trying to avoid (editing the XML files)...

Thanks... :)

Are these files that you bought through the iTunes store? You should be able to authenticate them up to 5 times. If that's not it... what do you mean by "associated with iTunes" and what happens when you try to play them on another computer?

Not bought with iTunes - files that were ripped from my own CDs...

I can play them on the other computer, but I can't make any changes to the iPod on the new computer...

Just copy the iTunes music folder (the main one that includes all the sub-folders for each band/album)... make sure you copy it to media that will hold it all at once - I used a DVD... then copy that whole folder onto the new computer. That's how I did it.

Don't have iTunes set up for automatic syncing (I think you "uncheck" it - as someone said - in the main device settings when you plug it into the computer)... and you should be able to load whatever you want onto each device.

Thanks - that's how I've got it set up now. I'll still have to modify some XML files (thanks Sarah), but shouldn't be too bad... :)
