I've ate dog before, too much gristle. They're like horses and goat, if you've ever eaten those. Too much muscle from being an active animal, not enough tender meat to pull off the bone.

I knew this really incredibly HOT Filipina chick once. She told me that when she was a little girl in the Philippines, her father gave her meat to eat and after she ate it he told her it was from a dog. She asked him why he had given her dog meat to eat. He said that eating the dog meat will help build up her body's immune system.

Now I don't know if this would work or not. That's what she told me was common belief and practice where she was from.

No, it was vitamin C, green leafy veggies and blueberries-you know, for the antioxidants. Sounds like you have a different kind of health maintenance plan.

Crating a dog is the ONLY way you can train them to not eat stuff while you are gone until they get older.
You need to walk him right after he eats, don't leave him there too long, leave him some stuff to chew on that is legal
and reward the dog.

....you gotta get a huge powder coated crate for this dog immediately...

I would look at the nature of the breed and have a vet treat him for an anxiety disorder.

My Sheltie chewed through the sheetrock in the bathroom when she was a puppy. Stripped off the wallpaper and then ate the wall down to the studs. She was bored and pissed at being left alone for too long.

Get a big crate, walk the pup faithfully twice a day, get chew toys it can't choke on; be consistent, be patient; it is owner training as much as it is dog training.

The Sushi Hunter wrote:I see some bad stuff coming up on the future with these two dogs in the same house. First off if the pit bull is killing chickens that should be a good indication of a bad habit and more to come from it. Secondly, a Chow is very protective of one owner. Chow's usually only bond with one person. This new dog in your house could be a problem for the Chow. Maybe it would be a good idea to look into characteristics of dogs before getting a few living under the same roof. That's the way it is when you put together a salt water tank, you have to make a determination what fish get along and which ones don't before getting them in the same tank. You wouldn't want to put a clown trigger in a tank with "nemo" (clownfish), if you know what I mean. Same goes for dogs.

I know what you're saying here, but I disagree. I've had two chows now (which have a TERRIBLE reputation), and have had the current one for 9 years. He loves EVERYONE (including, and ESPECIALLY small children). He also loves other dogs and animals, and hasn't been bad around the new dog at all. They snuggle with each other a lot.

As far as dogs and chickens, most dogs will chase a chicken (including my current chow). Our neighbors had some that he chased a few years ago, but he's never been aggressive to any other animal. That's just a dog thing.

A lot of their behavior is directly linked to how they are raised. Most of the pit bull attacks that you hear about are brought on by abuse, or dogs that are trained to attack. I've done my homework on the breed, and they have a very undeserved reputation. They bite humans less than most breeds out there. The difference is that if they DO bite, they're a very strong breed of dog with a serious set of jaws on them.

Both the women who grooms my chow, and the vets office that I deal with have told me that Pit Bulls are their very favorite breed of dog. These are two women who spend their LIVES around dogs. To me, that says a lot. They've both told me that they're a very loyal and loving breed of dogs.

I guess we'll see what she wants to do...

puppies should be crated. My vet and person I got my dog from said people have the
mistaken impression it's cruel, when, in fact, it's the opposite. They feel safe and don't
have anxiety when left alone young and can't be trusted to make mistakes and be destructive
b/c they are PUPPIES. I followed it to the T and it gave me sanity with my dog until it grew out of puppydom.

Say what you want about Pit Bulls, I would be worried about my other dog. We went to visit my family in
Georgia and they had two pit bulls. I was freaked out over my dog. And they thought I was silly and said they
were nice dogs. They seemed nice, and walked around loose (out in the country). But then my uncle admitted they turned on their third dog that wasn't a pit bull once and really hurt him.
Dogs that kill and maim children aren't a breed to be trusted. There are reports of family dogs who aren't abused who attacked. They are loyal, but will they be to friends and neighbors. I would up your homeowner's insurance.

From most past stories in the news about dogs, particularily pit bull breads, everyone is always besides themselves and shocked when a dog they all thought was nice and that they trusted out of the blue mauled someone to death. There is a story in the news now about a 70 pound pit bull who attacked two people recently and then was broken out of doggy death row by one of it's owners. The people involved, and NOT the dogs....cease to amaze me.

A friend of mine has a 4 year old son and a rotweiler and a greyhound mix as well, and both of those dogs are great big lapdogs (or think they are), it helps too that they crate trained both their dogs :)

Jim...crate train him. Buy a big enough crate for him and get him used to staying in it, especially when you are out.

It does wonders.

Sounds like the dog had some anxiety over being left, the crate provides an enclosed area that gives them sense of protection.

Jim, seriously, you'll be taking this dog to the shelter to be euthanized if you don't get some professional training help stat.

A 5 month old pit probably needs about 2 hours of exercise per day just to calm it down and mellow him out. If you like to run or jog take the dog with you. Find a local dog park. But don't take your dog there if it's dog or people aggressive. Next, many dogs act out when their owners leave because they have separation anxiety. You've brought this animal into a new environment, neutered it it could be anxious. Crate training will help. When we first got our dog we crated it a night and never left the dog alone uncreated for at least the 1st month. Also at first, you need to leave the dog for very short periods of time like 10 or 15 min so it knows you're coming back. If things are OK, then you can gradually increase the time. I find that a Kong toy packed with treats and peanut butter will also keep the dog busy. We keep them in the freezer so it takes them longer to get the treats out. Now our dog associates our leaving with fun treats.

Regarding hardwood floors, we had beautiful hardwood floors until we got our dog a beagle/golden retriever mix last year. They're now all scratched. So if this is going to drive you crazy, I don't recommend hardwood. Although I've seen some people but boots on their dogs to keep them from scratching the floors.
