Listen, Medusa, there are 343,423,668,428,484,681,262 gallons of water in the oceans. There are approximately 1.3 billion cubic kilometers of water in the oceans. 1 cubic kilometer of water contains 1 trillion liters of water. The 5 million gallons that have leaked into the water will be a very local, albeit prolonged, problem. And 30-40% of this amount will simply evaporate. This is really much less than "a drop in a bucket."

I clearly stated "the local economic woes" in my first post, SG. And relative to the amount of water on this planet, this is a very localized problem, and is "a drop in the bucket" as far as the vastness of the oceans is concerned. I have never said that there will not be longstanding issues for fisherman, marine life and/or beachfront resorts. There will.

this is my home and its royally fucked right now. I know of lots of fishermen-who probably supply you with shrimp when u want them-that are struggling because they cant move right now, its on the news daily. Its bigger than you think. And my heart bleeds for the marine life that are dying off by the thousands because of this. Local or not, its bad and it will affect the entire country...like our country needs more heartache thanks to fucking obama!

Why is this issue being politicized? It's a fucking awful mess, and Obama needs to put the pedal to the metal and hold those greedy oil tycoons over the fire. Everyone whose livelihood is affected in any way needs to be proportionately compensated by British Fucking Petroleum. American taxpayers should not foot one red cent of the bill.

I'm of the opinion that Obama is going to let this rage out of control as much as he possibly can to galvanize the hatred for big oil and try and spin this into being the fault of the right wing. And the same dopes that believed that 9-11 was staged will probably believe it.

Aren't you capable of talking about an issue without namecalling? It totally negates what you have to say to a great degree. To your point...uh yeah, duh...I know the ocean is vast. You didn't pay attention to what I said ...even to what you quoted. It's hit the Gulf stream now so it is no longer a smaller " localized" problem. Just because it's not affecting you where you are in any way right now doesnt mean it isn't a huge problem for others. Like I said...look outside yourself and see how other people and things are being affected. In time it will affect us all,....you may not see how yet but it will in some form of cost(s).

[quote="7 Wishes"]Why is this issue being politicized?

Exactly! It shouldn't be. This is a problem that everyone has to take some amount of responsibility for. First and foremost the greedy oil barons in drilling faster with abandon and cutting corners to make more money instead of making safety and care a priority....the rig operators, the backers and anyone else in the industry especially those that have known things that go on that are hazardous yet went about their business saying nothing.
ALL politicians, regardless of party, who have supported, been paid by, voted for offshore oil drilling.

And ALL of us who have been apathetic and buying into the cheapest and easiest for us....and just going about our daily lives, standing back and not fighting back and doing something to stop practices that we know are hazardous and immensely costlier in the long run in so many ways...to people in ways of war and economics....to the costs to our environment. It's up to each one of us to do something about this. Some locally with clean up efforts. We all have to speak up, to our congressmen, to our communities, etc... and say we don't want to pay the immense costs of using oil... we want safer, cleaner energy alternative's. Consumer demand is a powerful weapon along with our vote. Politician's can be swayed when the majority of their constituents make demands of them. If they do it doesn't matter if the oil companies pay them...they won't get re-elected without a majority vote.

We all have the responsibilty to make a change. In our own lives, environments, communities, countries. No excuses. Just do it. When everyone does something, together things will get done.

Instead of fighting against each other politically or otherwise we need to learn to work together for the betterment of all and all things and not just think about ourselves and just some. Look at the bigger picture not just your own small area in it.

The Gulf Of Mexico will now be a toxic sludge pool. It was bad enough when Katrina flooded every crack and crevice of New Orleans and then backwashed all those toxins into the Gulf, and now this shit. In addition, BP is flooding the oil spill with toxic oil dispersants. Everything in that motherfucker is going to die. It will be renamed the Mexican Dead Sea.

Thanks a lot brits - we were doing bad enough by ourselves without your help!

I find it old and tired to see people bashing Obama or Bush for this shit. That does nothing to fix anything, just creates a target to vent our anger on. Let's face it, Obama's skin color itself is enough to get a lot of your average red-blooded American rednecks enraged at him. But I have yet to see him fuck up as bad as Bush did... not even close.

I agree. The toxic dispersants they are using are only causing further damage. There are other things to use that wouldn't be harmful but they don't seem to know what they are doing since they don't even know how to stop the leaks.
