Two more full weeks to go with Journey in the studio here in San Francisco - we have eleven tracks - a few finished except for the backing vocals. Very cool tracks - very melodic, musical, very rocking - a little pop here and there, but far less than before.

Cain!

I like. "very melodic, very musical, very rocking." Nothing wrong with a little Journey pop rock done right. I consider that soft rock, which I love. :D

Yeah Yeah

don't worry. Back in the beginning of May when he said they were recording and it was F wicked, one of his fans posted, show us, and Neal replied back to her: Been in the studio with the guys....It is Rockin....No lie..;)))~~~~

Neal wouldn't lie.

From Kevin Shirley .. http://www.cavemanproductions.com/cavediary.htm

Recording of the new Journey album is going along very well - eleven tracks recorded - 4 are complete minus backing vocals (Monday and Tuesday's agenda), and there are lead vocals and a guitar solo to go on the rest - a little percussion here and there, a bass fix, etc........ San Francisco has shown it's very changeable and inconsistent weather - sunny and hot one day, cold and cloudy the next.

It's weird how they splice it all together, vs., just going in and playing it.

Berkley not Sausalito, huh?

Is it Fantasy (site of the Frontiers sessions)?

Anybody consider that we may never see this album?
I mean, what if it gets shelved for some reason?
What if Perry finally stages a comeback and wants to do Journey again?
What if whatever.

Just a quick thot.
Don't know why.

Maybe times have changed....other than ROR, it was always said that SP and the boys would go into the studio and just "played."

Well, does anyone just build a house ready to make home? No, they change the paint in a room, add tile, move a door, upgrade fixtures, expand the kitchen, rethink landscaping, etc. Since day one, way back when, recording an album - especially a concept album - starts with a sketch, and they fill in the blanks as they go.

Even with KS, who is a professed 'practice until you have it all down' producer, getting an idea to make something better or get a different vibe, means fixing or enhancing things. Then when you sing what you thought you wanted on top of that, sometimes it just doesn't fit. That means changing the vocal, or re-engineering a song to fit the vocal you want.

And often you just want to play with things, ie, do a song six different ways and then decide which you like best. Even in the limited lab that I've built, it's fun to just change s#it and see what happens.

The biggest pain (from what I've read) was when you had a record company calling the shots, and they'd bring in their A&R guy for a final review. A lot of times, he'd say it wasn't sellable and then tell you how to change it. Not sure how much of that goes on any more, but I think John Kalodner did a little of that to Arrival.

glad neal is taking the helm, not a huge shirley fan, but in the end, im sure cain will grt 3/4 ballad/mid tempos, which is fine as long as its not over wimpy like arrival, hope it has a departure vibe, and not something like red 13 which i think is the direction neal wanted to take the band

Arrival definately had too many of those sugary ballads-BLECH!

Departure (and earlier) is a good example of slow moody songs that are not "ballads".

I LOVED the direction of RED13!! The production was a shock at first. But WAFTE is EXACTLY the kind of 'ballad' I would like to hear.

Ugh. 13 is unlistenable.

Arrival had a number of ballsy songs - it should have been trimmed down to 10 tracks. The best ones were co-written by Blades.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

I still love most of Arrival and I actually ended up loving the music on Red13: Walking Away from the Edge, State of Grace etc. It was great to hear Neal do The Time on his solo tour.

Even if they did just that - certain overdubs and extra layers need to be added. Live to record only ever existed in the 50s and 60s as there wasn't the technology to multi-track.

I am so intrigued by what the concept is of the album. Arnel mentioned they had a title, but no hints.

My bet is on an album like Electric World -- songs about famous U.S. cities, but with a Journey style. Then they can call it "Freedom" :)

We have heard the title Freedom mentioned over the years so it's not exactly a new idea. Maybe save it for later, like for their swansong album.

Hopefully, something not as generic as Revelation. There are two albums sitting on Billboard's chart right now with that same name, and something like 11 albums overall with that title.

It's not like FREEDOM is very original ...didn't Akon have an album by that name in

Alright, I wasn't supposed to say anything but I can't keep it in any longer!!! The title of the album is "I Want Your Sex", and it's a themed album all about the life of George Michaels. Some of the song titles are: "You remember that time I met you in the mens room, but you were an undercover cop?", another is "I liked the way your hair was flowing that day at the park mister", and the only other one I heard was "he dude, are you tired? because you've been running through my mind all DAY!".
The artist formerly known as Jim. :-)

The Stones' Exile On Main has many allegedly autobiographical aspects but in interviews the band remains vague about the subject matter of those type of songs.
