Frontiers, Dallas TX Wildflower Festival Video

Postby Jeremey » Tue May 18, 2010 12:38 am

Hey all, just wanted to share some video from Friday's amazing show at The Wildflower Festival in Richardson TX (Dallas/Ft Worth). Performed with the Friday night lineup of Casey James (American Idol) and The B-52s. Friday's show was sold out, with over 10,000 people in attendance at our show. You can see quite a few of them like Journey here in this vid:

Apparently I'm the ONLY one to show up in here! I didn't post it to be a dick, and I would have posted that about any Journey tribute band. Hell, even going with pre-recording backing tracks would work great (Jeremey and I even discussed it while I was still in the band). The 1st gig I played with them, we had a Bon Jovi tribute band open for us. ALL of their backing tracks were pre-recorded and they sounded GREAT! Probably nobody from the crowd had a clue. All they knew was they heard a great tribute to Bon Jovi that had incredible vocals just like the albums.

It's just hard for me to hear a band that's a Journey tribute band with little to no backing vocals.

If you would like something beneficial though, bring the bass up in the mix. It's not even audible. When you go into your solo on DSB, the only two things heard are your guitar and the drums. Also, the vocals are pitchy as hell. Jeremey has sung that song a thousand times better than that. I'm just surprised he chose these two clips to promote the band. Just my $.02. Carry on.

Thats the direct feed from the video stream on the big screens, We didn't have any control over what mix they had on that. If you watch the 30 minute video on my facebook page there' a lot more where there were no issues with Vox.

How's bout them Cavs Matt? ;) We need to get together before the HOB show next week...I promise no Cavs jokes (mostly because the Suns will probably be gone by then ;) )

Oh and thanks as always Jim....lol

For sure man! I still have your phone number... I'll call you on show day and see what your guys' itinerary is looking like as far as arrival, soundcheck etc. I'd love to come down and chill before the show. Oh, and it'll be two weeks, not one, from this Friday... June 4. I remember last time you said you pretty much took the touring schedule day by day, lol.

Woah, I wasn't posting for rave reviews or constructive criticism. I was just trying to get our Youtube views up, that's why I posted it. It's no surprise to me that this site would be quite a bit more critical than the average listener....However, I don't want anyone to miss the point here. Just trying to boost views to the video and share with anyone interested the sight of 10,000 people jamming out to Journey in Texas last week.

RE Background vocals, mix, etc - As Stephen said, this was a video mix from the video production company so we had no control over the mix there. Although I don't recall there really being any background vocals in the song "Don't Stop Believin'", "Wheel In The SKy" is chock full of harmonies and although I don't have time to go back and listen to that particular clip, they are very present in our live mix. As far as being "pitchy as hell," well, it is what it is, I guess some just have incredibly high standards when it comes to this sort of thing. The fact that I run my vocal through an Antares processor among other things though makes me wonder at least about the "as hell" part.

So hope you enjoyed it! Thanks Marie, hope you can catch a show some day! And Matt, we will see you soon, bro....

Sorry Jeremey, but I don't take kind to someone saying I'm never one to post something beneficial. I think I contribute to this board. Not that that makes a hill of beans, but he put me on the defensive with the tone of his post. I wasn't trying to stir the shitpot, but just hadn't noticed the lacking of backing vocals until I saw these clips. If you're using pre-recorded vocals, they just didn't come out at all in this mix. Neither did the bass, or the keyboards after the intro.

Are you SERIOUS about there being no backing vocals in DSB??? Dude... they're HUGE in that song! :?

As far as Antares or whatever else you're running the vocals through, your pitch is all over on this song. It's not on the main notes, but a lot of your transition notes. You actually do it a lot, but it's more noticeable on this song than most I've heard you sing. You have a great voice, but there are just times that the pitch warbles. It could be worse... you could be a mediocre keyboardist who can barely sing at all!

I'm seriously not trying to razz you guys. I was just making a statement/observation that I think got taken the wrong way. I wish you guys nothing but the best, and hope to hear some original tunes from you sometime in my lifetime. :D

Hey man, no sweat from me! Just wanted to clarify, I still don't recall huge BGV in DSB, but I haven't listened to the original recording in a long time. I know that live they always did the ending chorus, but we never touched on it because I didn't remember it being in the original recording. I'll have to go back to listen to it! RE the pitch of my vocals, again, everyone's entitled to their opinion! It's not an issue with me....Having averaged a show every two days for two weeks (most over two hours long and all in the original key), I was glad to be standing up at that point, LOL!

Later,
J

You definitely get an applause from me for being able to sing that shit at ALL, let alone sing it as often as you do. I think the vibrato in your voice is what makes it sound like it warbles in the transition notes sometimes. You also did it in my original songs you worked on. I don't think it's something you can change at this point, and probably not a lot of other people notice. That's all that matters.

They got that octave thing going on in the first couple "Strangers... Waiting " choruses/whatever you wanna call it (not really the chorus), then the HUGE harmony on the outro "Don' Stop.. Believin."

Anyway, glad to see you and Jimbo playing nice. See you in a couple weeks J

I've been pullin for them Suns, but it looks like once again they have hit their ceiling. They just can't lock down on D enough to beat a team with as many weapons the Gaykers. I have never seen a team like The Suns - so much talent and athleticism over the last several years, but they have just consistently hit a ceiling every season. Hopefully they can defend home court the next 2 games and make a series out of this one.
