yeah, yeah. I was jogging one day and this black dog/part shepherd starting following me baring his teeth and barking in an aggressive manner in a neighborhood. We were at a standstill forever b/c I get so frightened. And realized I shouldn't show fear, so after a while, when he had done nothing, I turned to walk away and he lunged and bit me in my hip straight through my shorts. I was in so much pain and had two miles to run home. I ended up at the walk-in clinic having it looked at and getting a tetanus shot. The upside was the doctor was cute.

I'm not saying he should stay outside all the time, I'm saying let him be outside where he can run around and burn off steam without destroying the place when there isn't anyone home. If someone's home, he should be inside too - like I said, they're a breed that needs company.

Jana wrote:that's your opinion on crating a PUPPY. I crated her at night b/c she would destroy things and chase the cats, and if I penned her in a place she cried forever. I put her in the crate and she slept. When I was at work, she was crated, with a long walk b/f work, a walk at lunch and after work tons of walking and playtime outside with other puppies her size running wild to get her energy used up, plus going wild playing at night until bedtime. And a lot of times I worked at home, but would crate her for her naps, otherwise she wouldn't sleep and was wild and wouldn't let me work, but loose when not napping. I had a book and a pamplet on it and followed it, and dogs are den animals as my vet and trainer told me, so puppies feel safe in there, instead of free will around the house, when no one is home, being destructive, until trained. It's not forever anyway, Puppy time. And my dog hated to be left outside alone and would howl horribly. One day she matured and was fine and out of that stage and no more crate. What people need to know with any energetic puppy is they need a lot of walking and playtime. Mine needed A LOT. It was exhausting.

Ok, that's a bit different. All the stories I've heard of about crating dogs are basically shutting the dog up in a cage for long periods of time, while out at work all day for example.
I don't know anyone in Australia who uses a crate for dogs. And yes, puppies are a LOT of work. :D

I didn't read the entire thread but I would like to echo what's been said that showing a dog its mess and punishing them does NOTHING unless you act literally seconds after they've done it. Otherwise they already forgot what they did and you're just making them feel submissive for no reason they can understand.

I hope the pit bull does well in training, though... I hate to see people commit to adopting an animal and then sending it back. It's really stressful for pets to change homes/owners. I'm sure you know that though since you're a longtime dog owner.

FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VERY funny, thanks for the laugh, but sorry about the carpet. On a serious note, all I can echo is what people say about training your animal, keeping it caged in spots and keeping the hitting to a minimum. Unlike a child who knows it did wrong, an animal may do something naughty, but forget soon after. Don't know why. Whenever my 16lb boy cat attacks the 8 lb girl because he is mad I adopted her after him, I immediately grab him and sometimes flick his nose with my finger, that usually works. But, what really let's him know he's done wrong is when I yell at him......"You damn fat-ass, no job having, fat fucker, what the hell is wrong with you, you dumb fat retarded fat bastard?!" Unfortunately shouting insults at that behemoth renders him a bit depressed for about a half hour. Good luck! :D L

Well... here we fucking go!!! Our dog just went through his first obedience class this past sunday. Everything went well, and the instructor told us that we have a very sweet dog. He IS very sweet. We've bought him treats, toys, bed, chew toys, etc... He's been getting on our couches, so we've been spraying 2 different kind of sprays on the furniture that seemed to be working. This leads us up to tonight...

I get home a little while ago, and he's pulled the pillows off of the couches in the living room AND the family room, flipped his food bowl (with food in it_ upside down, spilled his water. I walked in and let out a big sigh, but didn't see anything too bad. that was until I walked into the living room. We have a trunk in our living room where we store our blankets, and it is beautiful. We spent at least $200 on it last year. He has chewed the SHIT out of the fucking thing and it is now destroyed. :x

I'm not saying another fucking word to my wife about this fucker! I was against it from the get-go, and he is getting EXTREMELY fucking expensive!!! Dog training, shots, neutering, toys, bed, carpet, now a fucking chest!!! I really am about to snap, but I won't say another word about the fucker. Tear our shit up buddy... I don't give a damn!!!

That's fuckin ridiculous man, get rid of that thing. I love pets as much as the next guy, but not when it rips shit apart non-stop. It won't be long before the fucker eats something it shouldn't and you have to pay for an expensive surgery to get it removed from his stomach.

you brought it on yourself, Jimbo. LOL Many of us on here told you. You're leaving a bored active puppy alone with run of certain areas. You just can't do that at this age. If you don't get a pen to hold him that works you can expect more. When my puppy was not crated, I would come home with stuff pulled off counters, garbage pulled out and dragged everywhere and clothes under the bed chewed through and once a purple magic marker chewed through with ink trailing all over the carpet and chair in the guest bedroom. At least, she didn't chew wood, which larger breeds are known to do. I would get out of the shower and my clothes had disappeared off the floor where I threw them. She destroyed them. It happened twice. Crating saved my sanity when there was no one around the house to watch her.

But I understand your pain. I had many miserable days when she was a puppy and many expensive days. Dogs aren't cheap.

Jana... How'd you get so damn sexy? :D I'm just messing with you, but everyone on here has advice. After I started this thread, I thought "this is kind of like asking people if they believe in spanking their children!". If you ask 100 people, you're going to get 100 different answers. Let me ask you this... Do you spank children? I'm just curious...

I had a 6 lb chihuahua that chewed up carpet and chewed the trim off door frames. Like a little rodent, she looked like one too.

LOL. I'm just saying you have to have her corraled in a place that she can't destroy furniture or wood, or crated. I don't believe in spanking children. But my parents spanked all of us a few times and I wasn't affected. I'm perfectly well-adjusted.

I disagree... you need a good spanking! :P  I somehow knew you would say that. I'm not judging here or picking on you at all, but I'm just pointing out that like raising children... 100 people raise dogs 100 different ways. If we got the dog a few years ago, I'd be much more tolerant of this behavior. I never wanted him to start with (even though I'm an animal lover, and he's extremely cute!). I love our old chow to death, and he's the best dog I've ever had. I'm happy with him being the only dog in the house.

My wife has been keeping him away from me since we got home... She knows I'm not happy.

I'm a monogamous kinda pet owner myself. I've always had cats and dogs are generally better about sharing the house with "friends," but I still feel like I'd rather have one animal I can pay all my attention to than 2 or 3 different ones. I feel like I appreciate the pet more if I have just one.

My wife has been keeping him away from me since we got home... She knows I'm not happy.

Tolerant -- Puppies need boundaries, not free run as puppies if they're wild with energy. So you let him have free run while you're gone and, naturally, he will be destructive, like he was, and then you say you can't tolerate it and I guess might get rid of him. You're setting him up for failure, Jim.

Though, I still say I feel your pain. Puppies are a nightmare and I second-guessed my decision many times, as my neighbor is doing right now with her wild Puggle, Beagle/Pug. They're miserable many days with her. They look worn out.

You just made me laugh out loud Mike... Thanks! :D I refuse to have an outside dog. My opinion of that, is why even have a dog if he's left outside? Some people leave dogs outside during the day and let them in at night, but dogs get nasty outside. I want a clean dog that lives inside and interacts with the family.

Don't feel bad Jimbo. When I was single and alone, my cat would do some pretty wacky stuff if I didn't come straight home after work. It was weird but if I went out after work and didn't get home until late, my cat would open up my sock and underwear drawers and pull everything out and have it scattered all over the bedroom by the time I got home. But if I came home right after work first, gave her some attention for a little bit and then went out all night, I would come home to a perfectly organized clean home.

So.......
I've never eaten a piece of sushi I didn't thoroughly enjoy.

Perhaps now you can call it even for buying that new truck?
