I'd rather see the two best teams of the playoffs duke it out. Blackhawks vs Flyers. :)

it's going to be a good series! The flyers definitely deserve to be there!

Well, you got your wish.

Here we are, 18 years to make it back to the Finals, and this time we face the other PA team.
It's gonna be wild. And unnerving!!

Then I will thank you in advance never to choose the Pens to advance....ever

I'll consider it.

Just waiting to see if Montreal can pull another comeback. But let's assume the Flyers advance. Which team would you like me to jinx?

I would like for YOU to wish for Montreal to advance.... (in other words, jinx them   ) But I will be rooting for the Blackhawks regardless. Hoping it will be the Blackhawks vs. Flyers. :) (still grumpy the Pens are out though :x )

I did. When they knocked out both the Caps and Pens, my next prediction was Habs in 6 over the Flyers.

If the Blackhawks are your pick, then you're in luck. I'm thinking Flyers in 7.

Thing is, there's a lot going for the Flyers. They beat Brodeur & the Devils. Came back 0-3 against Boston, then followed it up by defeating the Habs, who themselves took down both the President's Trophy winning Caps & defending Stanley Cup champs the Penguins. That's a lot of quality opponents there.

The Flyers have a Cup winning coach in Peter LaViolette.
They have a Cup winning veteran defenseman in Pronger.
They have a goaltender that is virtually unknown in Leighton. He looks near-invincible because there just isn't enough film on this guy and nobody knows how to beat him yet.

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks have everything going against them.

Sure, they have a little Cup experience in the likes of Jon Madden. They got plenty of Cup-losing experience in Marion Hossa. But for the most part, they're a young team with no experience in a Cup final. That of course, didn't bode too well for the Penguins in their first of two attempts, and likely shouldn't here.

Dustin Byfuglien has been quite the role player in winning games, but do you think Big Buff will get to screen the Flyers goalie so much with Bigger Pronger playing the blueline?

I'm still not sold on Antti Niemi. He's shown some moments of greatness but has also played real shaky in other starts. I think his performance will make or break the Blackhawks.

In addition, the Blackhawks are as close as futile as you can get in the NHL. Every sport has a futile team. The NFL has the Detroit Lions. In Baseball, it's the Cubs. In the NBA, it's every team not named the Lakers, Celtics, or Spurs. In the NHL, it's the Blackhawks. They have the longest Stanley Cup drought, and they're also the Original 6 team with the fewest Stanley Cups at 3, and prior to this year's appearence, tied for the fewest Finals appearences as well by Original 6 teams.

And if that isn't enough, I should note that Marion Hossa also plays for Chicago. During both Wings/Pens finals, the only significant change on the roster both years was Hossa. And both times, he was on the losing end.

So, outside of their #2 seed status, there's nothing that says that the Blackhawks can win.

That said, you now know why I'm taking the Flyers in 7.

...

There you go. The Flyers are now jinxed. Now watch your Hawks raise the Cup 2 weeks from now..

...except on the rare occassion where I jinx my own jinx and end up being right once in every thousand attempts. You never know with me.

Yes and that made me very happy.
Think I'm more bothered by it not being an "original six" cup series than anything.
I would have been puckly pleased to see Chicago and The Bruins go after it.
I blame Gary Bettman with his tweaking of the NHL and his afternoon games.

No surprise with Philly. They are a good defensive hockey team, unlike the Caps OR the Pens. The Canadians did nothing but play boring hockey and make them two teams stumble all over their sticks. Play some defense, and no 3 on 2, 2 on 1's occur, translation: slaughter. Congrats to MTRL for having a great season, they opened up many eyes in the last 2 rounds of the playoffs.

I'm rooting for Hossa. Say what you want about the guy (Pittsburgh fans) but he came in here and did nothing but play his ass off, and same goes for Detroit and now Chicago. 3rd times the charm. Blackhawks in 5.

Oh would that have been like drinking the blood of a vampire. That would have been amazing to jinx Hossa for a 3rd time in a row if it was a Pitt/Chi finals, the laughter would have been too much if we would have went on to win it, but that's all fantasy talk  It's time to actually root for the guy, we put him in his misery state last season, he deserves a ring.

Saying it for the last time..:.Philly is only in the finals because Boucher went down....and that's ok. We know riding a hot goalie in the playoffs is paramount to winning....but Boston owned Boucher. Leighton is a beast.

In summary, Philly is lucky.

I think he fell off the face of the Earth with this hockey stuff. Couple years ago, when the Wings for the class of the NHL and won the Championship over the Pens in '07, they were the best thing around and noone could touch them and all hail Detroit. Now, a totally different tune and and about, 200 posts LESS in the hockey thread

I think this is the last we've heard of RWF:

The Red Wings are pathetic. No defensive scheme or responsibility whatsoever. All that Bowman put together is ruined, they've gone from the "left wing lock" to a swinging gate. Add a rookie goaltender and the result will be a first round exit EVERY TIME.

Either that, or he's piling up his chips and going all in on the 2010 Oakland Raiders. 8)

I remember watching the Flyers on my little black and white TV in the 70s.

Then Hockey players started wearing helmets and it wasn't quite as exciting anymore.

Speaking of Philadelphia, I was saddened by the news of Bill Weber's passing.

Sunday, May 23, 2010
"Wee Willie" Webber has passed away
Bill Webber (via WHAT)

Bill "Wee Willie" Webber, who at 6-foot-5 was one of the giants of broadcasting in the Philly area, died this morning of an apparent heart attack at age 80.

He had heart trouble of late, according to Gerry Wilkinson of the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia.

Philadelphians of a certain age grew up with the mellifluous Mr. Webber, whose rich career included Channel 6 (the morning kiddie show called Breakfast Time) and its "Famous 56" AM radio station before joining WIP as a middle-of-the-road DJ.

His was the voice that introduced American Bandstand in its Philadelphia incarnation. While at Channel 3 and at KYW, he spun the last record on KYW before it went all-news. Mr. Webber was let go from KYW TV to make way for Mike Douglas.

A Broadcast Pioneers bio notes that in 1965, just after his layoff, he became the first face on Channel 17. For 10 years, he hosted the "Wee Willie Webber Colorful Cartoon Club," and then moved to Channel 48.

From 1989 to 2005, he was on WPEN before its flip to sports talk. He'd been doing a late-morning show, Second Cup of Coffee, on WHAT (1340 AM).

Mr. Webber was chairman of the Broadcast Pioneers board. He is survived by his wife, Constance, and children Bill Jr. and Wendy.

Unfortunately yes. See, it was up this whole time and the Blackhawks won.
Probably unrelated but superstition wins out.
Maybe having that up jinxes the PA team? In which case it still must stay.
