Aerosmith tickets are most expensive in New York State Fair history
By Mike McAndrew / The Post-Standard
May 24, 2010, 6:00AM

Syracuse, NY - The New York State Fair will pay Aerosmith a guaranteed $1 million this summer, making the rockers the first to strut in that stratosphere in the fair’s history.

No other performer has ever been paid a guarantee that high. The highest was $800,000 paid to country stars Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift in 2008.

If the Aug. 26 grandstand show sells out, Aerosmith could earn about $300,000 more, too. The band will receive 85 percent of gross ticket sales over $160,000, according to the company that produces the fair’s concerts. Aerosmith will break another record at the fair. The $104 top-priced ticket is $34 higher than the fair has ever charged for a concert.

Even the cheapest $84 Aerosmith seat beats the fair’s previous high, the $70 ticket for a day-long show featuring Linkin Park and 10 other punk bands in 2007.

To net any profit, the fair will need to sell a lot of Aerosmith tickets.

Even if the show is a sellout there won’t be much money for anyone other than Aerosmith. If the total take were $1.6 million, the band would get more than $1.3 million of it, according to The Post-Standard’s calculations.

Fair officials declined to disclose how much the fair would net from a sold-out show.

Despite the economy, the fair is confident the 17,000-seat grandstand will sell out, said Frederic Pierce, the fair’s spokesman.

“We’re incredibly excited about this concert,” Pierce said.

Tickets for Aerosmith go on sale 10 a.m. Saturday .

I have no idea of how much Journey or other classic rock acts get paid but I'm guessing that individual acts playing the State fair have never even gotten paid half of this amount so how is Aerosmith pulling this off? Is this proof that drama pays or what?

Why does it increase a band's ticket price when a band member goes on a drunken drug-fueled binge and ends up in rehab?

Hey Arnel - break out the crack pipe and the Jack Daniels and get to drinking and cracking son!

Do bands even get paid a million dollars for playing MSG, let alone the State Fair? Aerosmith was huge a few years ago but I just can't believe they can command this price now days, especially with no new music being released.

Give it a few days and we will hear about a bunch of different rockers who have overdosed and gotten hammered in an attempt to follow Tyler's lead to resurrect their careers.

They'll have Perry on a surveillance tape, wandering around PETCO after hours, drunk, with a big bag of catnip under each arm going "Here, kitty kitty."

Well, good for Aerosmith, but this kinda sucks. Someone can correct me, but I believe Journey sold this out last year. So did Journey lay the groundwork for Aerosmith to get $1.0mm?

Yup, definitely sucks. Maybe Journey should be touring this year??

Not me, I wouldn't pay that much to see them at a Fair.

Glad that I don't have to pay an arm and a leg to see my favorites. I noticed that, a few years ago, when I went to a Bon Jovi concert and paid over 8 times what I did to see JSSB a couple months later, but yet enjoyed the JSSB show probably over 8 times more. I've been seeing a lot of GREAT 80s/90s acts in clubs/casinos/theatres lately and loving it way more than arena shows.

Aerosmith has the hits and the original singer and band and people want to see them. I don't think they would come near that amount anywhere else. Both coasts overpay for everything. Is it true cigs are 11.00 in N Y ? They are 4.00 here for those that buy them.

That's the ticket for bringing in the big $$$$$$$!!!!! Geography may play a huge part, as you've stated, but I'd go see them in the North and South

I was guessing earlier that Journey gets about 250K a gig. Looks like Aerosmith is getting one million even if they don't sell out.

Drama AND reputation sells. Aerosmith is one of the best selling American hardrock bands out there with close to 150 million sales worldwide. Four Grammy Awards, Top ten hits every decade, they have good credentials even if they aren't what they used to be. AND they do have their original singer which seems to be the missing ingredient for some promoters.

If Perry had gone ahead and replaced Tyler, they wouldn't be getting half that amount for this gig.
