Journey are currently in the studio with producer Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith/Led Zeppelin/Iron Maiden) in the early stages of creating a follow-up to Revelation, the band’s 2008 album which introduced their latest lead singer, Arnel Pineda.

Words: Dave Ling

The group face this task with the wind in their metaphorical sails after two rival versions of their power ballad Don’t Stop Believin’ – the original from 1981’s album Escape and a re-make that featured in the children’s TV show Glee – battled it out in the UK’s Top 10 singles chart earlier this year.

“[The song’s success is] brilliant for us and bands like us,” maintains Schon.

“If people think Don’t Stop Believin’ is a Glee song and not one of ours, I don’t mind. Those are brand new fans – I’m happy they like the song, period.

“We did really well the last time we toured in the UK [in June 2008], also playing at [last year’s] Download, so we’ve taken the rest of the year off to prepare this new CD. Things are on the up-and-up for us over there. It’s great to know that doors are finally opening.

“We’re going to be here [in the studio] for a little bit over a month,” he continues. “Overdubs and vocals are going really well. Kevin has to run off to another project, so we will come back and sing some more in November. The material is extremely strong.”

Expect the as-yet untitled record to be released next spring.

Given that Don’t Stop Believin’ has been officially recognised as the most downloaded song of all time (“Bigger than [anything by] Led Zeppelin or The Beatles, that’s mind-boggling,” marvels Schon), Journey are already planning to play in the UK in 2011.

“The promoters are keen to have us back as [bona fide] headliners, and we’re excited to be coming as part of our next world tour,” sums up Neal. 8)

This writer needs to quit with the ass kissing.

What is not clarified is that it's the most downloaded catalog track of all time, it's not even in the Top 30 for most downloaded song of all time.
Maybe the reason it has more downloads than The Beatles and Led Zeppelin is because those fans actually buy entire albums.

Those promoters were looking to have Journey this year. An idea time would have been two months ago when you had two versions of DSB in the Top 10 and Journey's Greatest Hits in the Top 20. Now both versions of DSB are out of the Top 40 and the Greatest Hits have fallen off of the album chart.

Not the band's fault of course but could the timing to take a year off of touring have been any worse?

Hey! The guy with the facts checks in.

David Ling is pretty much a 50ish old hippy. Actually, I don't think he's a big Journey fan. But what a gig he has!! Who needs facts?

I agree about touring this year, don't know who made the decision but I guess we'll just have to see what 2011 brings.

BTW You'll always be Gunbot to me. :D

Top Selling singles of all time.
Led Zeppelin didn't release singles for Top 40 radio, so we just have to assume that the 100 million albums they have sold in North America alone are a pretty good barometer of their success.

SINGLES
GLOBAL

37 Million Singles Sold

Candle In The Wind (Princess Diana Tribute) - Elton John

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
30 Million Singles Sold

White Christmas - Bing Crosby [original]

*All versions of Bing's song has sold a staggering 70 million copies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

17 Million Singles Sold

Rock Around The Clock - Bill Haley and His Comets

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12 Million Singles Sold

I Want To Hold Your Hand - The Beatles

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10 Million Singles Sold

Hey Jude - The Beatles

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10 Million Singles Sold

It's Now Or Never - Elvis Presley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10 Million Singles Sold

I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9 Million Singles Sold

Hound Dog - Elvis Presley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9 Million Singles Sold

Diana - Paul Anka

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8 Million Singles Sold

(Every Thing I Do) I Do It For You - Bryan Adams

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 Million Singles Sold

Don't Stop Believin' - Journey

We can cheat and add in three million digital sales for Don't Stop Believin' but even then, Hey Jude and I Want To Hold Your Hand still punches DSB'S clock.

Don't Stop Believin' is a phenomenally successful song, I just don't see the need to keep over exaggerating it's place in the annals of Rock and Roll.

So doesn't this go back to that whole issue about "catalogue" type sales? Not sure if this is the right term, but old music might fit just as well?

My list is for single sales (45s, CD singles). This whole digital downloads thing doesn't bring into light how many singles of a song were actually sold over all.

I would guess that 95 percent of White Christmas numbers are hard copy sales, not Digital. It still sold 30 million copies, either way you slice it.

Maybe, just give them a couple more years. Who knows?? I still love Bing though :D

One thing is. I'll bet you money if you started singing "just a small town girl" a whole group of folks would start singing along with you.

I'm not denying that. I wonder though, how many people would be singing with the Glee version in mind vs the original one.

You do realize that the cash Paul McCartney made from the ten shows he did last year dwarfed the money you made doing 50 shows, right? Talk about mind -boggling.

For the record, I don't really like any music of the Beatles but I can't let my personal bias blind me to what are the facts. I don't own any of the Beatles records nor any of John's, Paul's or George's solo work. My Personal opinion, if it need be known is that Led Zeppelin is the greatest Rock and Roll band of all time.

It is the most downloaded catalog track. It's just that when it is said to be the most downloaded song in history, that is not accurate unless you specify that you are only talking about catalog tracks. As we know there are plenty of other songs that have more downloads than DSB and as far as overall sales as a single in any format, dozens of songs that have more sales.

That's what I was thinking too....and it was years ago, when Augeri was still in the band. It may have been specific to iTunes as well.
