Sigh - Tom, you really might want to start reading entire sentances; it's a useful part of this whole comprehension thing. Is your nick-name Eve? No - which means this comment was not about you.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

I'm only going to respond to 2 points in this, because quite honestly, I don't think it matters a damn what I say, you've decided I'm some US-hating bitch and you're too self-involved to ever change your mind or admit that you got something wrong.

Tomulator wrote:Does the little "smiley face" next to your comment about Canada defeating the USA in a war on our soil strike a bell with you?? You seem to take some amount of "satisfaction" from that. Why is that?

There's this idea that when you are posting words that can be read as being angry and offended, when you are not actually either, it helps to put in the emoticon that reflects the idea that you are not actually angry or offended. So I put in a smiley icon, to indicate that what was writen was said in a friendly, not-angry manner, and should be read as being light-hearted and not to be taken seriously. Most people understand this; certainly everyone else seems to have done so. It's an interpretation you might want to consider next time before flying off the handle.

We'll skip over the idea that the world was fighting fascism for the moment - no, those who opposed the Nazis were not incorrect. Did you know that most German, Austrian, Italian, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Slovakian, Serbian, Yugoslavian, Croatian and Albanian soldiers in World War Two were not Nazis? They were ordinary men, fighting for their countries and homes, to protect their families, and to do what they believed was right. I respect and honour them for the sacrifice that they made, even though I vehemently disagree with the politics and the inhumane policies of their leaders. Just like I honour and respect the US men and women serving in Iraq, even though I personally think the Iraqi invasion was a mistake and I disagree with the politics that lead to the invasion, and the politics that keeps those people serving there.

Here's something for you to ponder - in World War Two, my grandmother's brother was a sailor in the German navy. Did that make him a Nazi? Nope, and he would never join the Nazi party, if for no other reason than that the Nazis killed his father for being a trade unionist. The Nazis were a political party; jut because they were in power during the war does not make the Axis soldiers all Nazis or Facists, any more than it made all American soldiers Republicans under Bush or makes them all Democrats under Obama.

And before you make any other assumptions about what that must mean with regards to my politics or my beliefs, both my grandfathers served in the RAF, one as a fighter pilot and one as a navigator and reconnaissance photographer. The D-Day landing reconnaissance photographs were taken by my Poppa; his was the only plane in his squadron to make it back. The mental scars those two men carried their entire lives is just one of the reasons why I will respect the sacrifice made by every service man and woman.

At this point, I'm going to make a respectful request: stop making assumptions about me, and about what I believe. You have totally misread everything I've posted, and totally over-reacted at every point. Calm down and move on. If you can't do that, then at least shut the fuck up.

The mind positively boggles! I'm reminded of "Puppetry of the Penis" (although I always thought it should really be "Puppetry of the Scrotum".)

I know ALOT more about history than you think I do. I will leave it at that.

Did YOU know that a systematic, mass, "brain-washing" existed in the late 1930's and on into WWII in Germany aimed at the youth? It certainly played a HUGE role in the PROPOGANDA that was the Third Reich. It explains why otherwise "sane" human beings could have killed in the name of such an "insane" ideology. They systematically filled the media with pro-Hitler, pro "master race" BS. This eventually led into the creation of the "Hitler Youth", etc. Fear and intimidation primarily kept the masses from rebelling at the time. However, that was not my point. My point was, there are times throughout history when a "stand" for what is "right" must be made. By and large, this country, USA has stood for what is right and just. Not always, but the vast majority of the time! This INCLUDES Iraq, IMO.

I'm not an idiot. Not by a long shot. I still believe your use of the emoticons leads one to the sense that you take some pleasure in "bringing the Americans down a notch or two". It's not the first time you have come off that way...think hard about that. No one said you were angry or offended either. In fact, your post with the smiley face seemed to take pleasure (humor) in the fact that the USA lost a war. Can you understand and see that?!

BTW, I am thankful for the tremendous sacrifices your family members made in WWII. I also had family that served in that war and died in it.

And don't tell me to STFU either. What a useless thing to say to someone.

Sorry I was confused. You all seem to somehow know each other by "first names" and I quite frankly don't. I got lost in the comments, thought they referred to me.

Of course I know about the brain washing that went on; my grandmother lived through it, and was unable to speak out against it for fear that she, and the rest of her family, would be murdered the way her father was.
BTW - I don't presume to know how much history you know. That's why I asked if you were aware that most of the Axis soldiers weren't Nazis.

Like I said before, I don't think there is anything I can say that is going to make you change your mind about me. To be honest, no I can't see how using a smiley emoticon implies that I took pleasure in America losing a war.

As for not telling you to STFU - about as useless as telling me to lose the attitude, maybe?
