All I ever heard was about Carrie as the main character, and also about Samantha's nudity. But this show was so much more and really had an authenticity about it regarding the friendships of these four women in glamorous New York City. Refreshing compared to all the sitcoms where usually the storylines come across as forced, canned, and fake lines to be funny, characters one-dimensional. Save Friends, which had the same kind of realness regarding the characters.
And all four of these women were so different and made for interesting friendships, and the story lines you really lived with them. Miranda was one of my favorite characters, so flawed, so tough, but deep down mush, but I loved all four women. The show had great writers on it and there were many great observations made about life, friendships, sex, relationships, very moving at times, all the while being a truly funny show, also. Cable shows are the best. .

Perfectly said Jana!! Men are usually too shallow to understand these deep, complex friendships!!

What. A. Letdown. If you really really insist, though... just take a 10 dollar bill and flush it down the can, because you will still have wasted your $10, but you will have 2 1/2 hours available to you with which to do something else.

Hmm... apparently you were wrong!!! Did you go for popcorn and miss all the good stuff? According to The Movie Guy:

"It is always fun to spend more time with this fabulous foursome and the men in their lives. This second cinematic bite of the apple far exceeds expectations and is a significant improvement over the 2008 movie. The familiar theme song and an aerial shot of the Big Apple make the rabid fans feel right at home from the outset.... The movie’s major theme is to push against tradition and encourages couples to make their own rules for a workable relationship... Every outfit worn by these endearing ladies is sensational. They put on a fashion show that demands repeat viewing just for another look at the clothing, fine jewelry, shoes, handbags and accessories. Costume designer Patricia Field is an ironclad lock to win an Academy Award. It has been reported that the extensive wardrobe cost a whopping $10 million. Parker alone has 41 costume changes. The actresses look simply divine in each colorful getup. Besides a hefty paycheck for reprising their roles, these household heroines got to keep all the clothes they wore in the film... Another major strength is the musical score selected by composer Aaron Zigman... The movie is breezily paced and viewers will be glad nothing was cut from the nearly 2 ½ hour running time.... This must-see destination event is perfect for a girls’ night out or as an eye-opener for guys to get a better understanding of what women really want from an intimate relationship."

No, I didn't miss anything. It was not "breezily paced"... it was long and really slow in a lot of places.
And there's no eye opener for guys to understand jack. The guys in those movies don't exist. Most men don't act like that.
The guys in those movies are the prince charming types that come along once in a never.

Hmmm.... is seems like you might have an acute case of Hughgranticitis! It's blurred your vision, rendering you incapable of recognizing real world Prince Charmings, hahaha! There was a study done on this phenomenon a while back:

Study: Romantic Comedies Can Ruin Your Life

Next time you take a date to the movies, see a horror flick. At least if you want to stay together.

That's the advice researchers at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh have for would-be couples.

Romantic comedies, or "rom-coms," promote unrealistic expectations of love and relationships, according to their study.

Researchers had 100 student volunteers watch the 2001 romantic comedy "Serendipity," and 100 more watch a creepy David Lynch movie.

Students watching "Serendipity" were found to be more likely to believe in fate and destiny. Fans of romantic comedies were also found to have a stronger belief in predestined love.

"Marriage counselors often see couples who believe that sex should always be perfect, and if someone is meant to be with you, then they will know what you want without you needing to communicate it," said the university's Dr. Bjarne Holmes. "We now have some emerging evidence that suggests popular media play a role in perpetuating these ideas in people's minds. The problem is that while most of us know that the idea of a perfect relationship is unrealistic, some of us are still more influenced by media portrayals than we realize."

Researchers studied 40 films between 1995 and 2005, including "You've Got Mail," "Maid In Manhattan," and "The Wedding Planner," and identified common themes in them which they believed were unrealistic.

"[These films] do capture the excitement of new relationships but they also wrongly suggest that trust and committed love exist from the moment people meet," said Kimberly Johnson, who also worked on the study "Whereas these are qualities that normally take years to develop."

Next time, definitely go for Freddy or a Rambo flick -- good for the heart, good for the soul!

You're not alone, bro. :) I've watched my fair share, too. I pretty much handle our Netflix queue and keep it evenly balanced. Two I ordered in the past few weeks that we really enjoyed were George Clooney's "Up In The Air" (excellent!) and "The Blind Side" with Sandra Bullock. That's not exactly a romantic comedy but it's still Sandra Bullock and that was one of the best films I've seen all year. Still haven't made it to "Iron Man II" yet, but maybe later today. :)

I'm sure I sound all negative and jaded, but in those movies, the prince charmings always forgive them or come back or realize what they lost after they fucked up, or whatever the situation is. I'm just saying in real life, that doesn't happen.

Serendipity is a nice idea, and I used to even kind of believe in it. Maybe we just talk ourselves into believing it while we're actually IN a good situation, and we think "wow, I'm so meant to be with this person" because we want to romanticize it. But all it is, really is situational. People meet each other under random and unlikely circumstances all the time. I used to think that the more unlikely the situation is that brings good friends or lovers together, the more it was meant to be.

But just because you believe it doesn't change what the other person will do. I thought it was absolutely meant to be when my husband and I got together, because the way it came together was so beyond likely, that I thought there was a big reason for it. I later let myself believe that about two other friends that I met in really unlikely ways with really odd circumstances. One of them, the circumstances were REALLY weird.... she and I discovered 3 totally separate and very close connections that we had that go back to when we were kids. Seemed like we were meant to be friends. We were not. She's a douchebag.

Serendipity: Nice idea, nice romantic comedy plot. That's about it.

The truth is, however it comes about that you meet a best friend, or boyfriend, or husband or wife, or whatever, it's only meant to be if you treat each other well, appreciate each other, respect each other and work at the relationship, etc.

Sandra Bullock is an excellent actress when given a good role. The Blind Side is simply not a chick flick at all man. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head that I liked, but I'm sure I at least enjoyed a few I've seen with girlfriends. For me, chick flicks are generally just like the worst kind of derivative modern pop music to me - every once in a while, I might stumble upon a guilty pleasure in a bar or a friend's car in an otherwise mess of terrible songs that is pretty enjoyable despite being totally unoriginal and utterly predictable, just as when a gf/wife forces you to watch these movies, every once in a while you'll enjoy one because the characters are well done or there's some nice humor, the predictability of the story and embarrassing dialogue notwithstanding. Note in both scenarios the cheesy guilty pleasure song or movie is forced on me by a third party. There's no way I'd search through the mounds of shit to find one diamond in the rough of my own volition.

I'd even say I'd often enjoy the first 25-45 minutes of many chick movies because it was set in a neat place, had some nice humor, or whatever, but then the story would just take a ridiculous turn or the resolution would be absurd. Action movies might be just as predictable and corny in many instances, but guys just generally like death, destruction, and badass dudes wrecking bad guy's days. Don't tell me you don't get that nice fuzzy feeling in your stomach and have a desire to be in his shoes as you watch Charles Bronson with an epic 70s mustache gun down street scum in Death Wish. Action and chick flicks both idealize gender roles in the eyes of their respective target audiences, hence why dudes prefer action and chicks prefer syrup flicks.

So basically, how do you watch any chick flick?

For the record, most real life women in these movies don't act like those chicks either. Many of the chicks I know from my generation are just lookin to go out, get fucked up, and fuck more dudes than the dudes are lookin to fuck girls. And I'm not talkin about just the kinda chicks you would look at and instantly know at least 50 poles have penetrated her... talkin about bring home to mom type lookin and acting girls too.

Yes, they do! Sometimes, anyway. Maybe a lot less than in the past.

I had to look up the word to remember exactly what it is. Interesting what they say in the 2nd part: Serendipity is a propensity for making fortuitous discoveries while looking for something unrelated. The word has been voted as one of the ten English words that were hardest to translate in June 2004 by a British translation company.

That's definitely the truth. Fate, destiny, luck, Karma, or grand design -- those things quit making sense to me a few years ago. Everything now really seems to be random chance with an occasional good helping of coincidence tossed in to make it intriguing. Good things will sometimes happen to bad people, and horrible things will happen to good people just the same.

I have to modify my comment...I can't sit through films like Beaches, Steel Magnolias, or Fried Green Tomatoes...if those are *chick flicks* I recant my love of them...but movies like Serendipity, Keeping the Faith, Must Love Dogs, Cutting Edge, A Lot Like Love, Shopgirl, A Guy thing, The Shape of Things, You Stupid Man, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall...are great.

Yeah, that wasn't really a proper example, except as a movie that a guy might not not pick immediately if they walked by it at Blockbuster.

Ehwmatt wrote:...guys just generally like death, destruction, and badass dudes wrecking bad guy's days.

Well, it's generally up to us to promote a healthy value of justice in our families. Otherwise our kids will grow up thinking "justice" is nothing more than when a man gets "Bobbitized" or shot in the balls.

You love romantic comedies, not chick flick dramadies or tearjearkers.

Guys get filled with all sorts of unrealistic images of what women should be too, LOL. No telling how many young men our age were ruined for life by this commercial:

I saw the movie, and because I was expecting a complete stinkfest based on the reviews, my expectations were decidedly low and it wasn't that bad! Not great, but it had some funny moments and I am not even a fan of the show. I've gone to or rented some movies where I not only would like to have my money back, but the 2 hours of my life I could have better spent staring at a wall, but this wasn't one of them. It was more of a fun experience - eye candy with beautiful clothes and gorgeous men.

Of course the men in the movie are unrealistic - it isn't a drama. The women are not that real to me either and neither is the world they inhabit, though their friendship together is wonderful. My favourite character is Samantha - I am nothing like her, but I think we all need to channel her a little more. I do not know anyone who wears vintage designer clothing and has a closetful of $400 shoes, owns a $30-$50K handbag (yes, one rare Birkin), or sleeps around like these characters, but Manhattan is like another planet to me! And did anyone else find the movie had a lot of obvious product placement? Susanne Somers's latest book is going to jump off the shelves again. Where can I find a Thighmaster?

^^+1  Im glad you all reviewed it so low because i too had terrible expectations, and it ended up not feeling that bad for me. Sure it was corny in places, not realistic, and a strange setting, but still entertained me enough not to hate it. I don't really look for realism anyway though in movies. Life is real enough. though it may have helped and could be thanks to a friends husband providing a couple of drinks and a ride to and from the theater. So maybe that suggestion helped!
