Creepy noises in our woods last night

Postby Peartree12249 » Sat Jun 05, 2010 1:45 pm

Has this ever happened to you? You wake up in the middle of the night by some animal outside your window making horrible noises? That's what happened to me last night. About 3:00 am my husband & I were awakened by this god-awful screaming sound. We live out in the country so in the summer at night sound travels far and echoes throughout the neighborhood. It was very eerie. My dog was freaking out, and the noise went on for a good 15 min. only to start up again about an hour later after we'd finally gotten back to sleep.

We know it wasn't cats mating I've heard that enough to recognize the sound, my husband thought it was a coyote, but I've never heard a coyote scream like that & it wasn't a screech owl although those sound pretty creepy as well. The mystery deepened this morning when my husband found just the feet & a few feathers of a chicken or young turkey lying in our driveway.

Tonight at dusk it started up again and so I hit the internet and finally figured out what it was. Thank God for Google. LOL

Wow, I bet that was fun. I had one of those run across the road on my way to work, early one morning. And I live right in the middle of the DFW metroplex. We live along a small creek, in an apartment, and you wouldn't believe the animals we've seen.

Yeah - my drunk and very loud neighbor every Friday night  .

Actually, I've never heard one of those, don't know that we have them around here. But we have all kinds of other animals wandering in the woods behind us - bears, deer, moose, coyotes - but the permanent residents are these guys:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weuPspFabL0

They never shut up (but they are pretty cool). When my spaniel was a puppy, one of them flew over the fence and she was chasing it all around the yard. She really could have been hurt if the thing decided to start pecking at her, but I think he was just confused. My husband was actually able to pick him up and put him back over the fence so I think he was kind of in shock, didn't fight him at all. I noticed a bunch of other pheasant vids on YouTube where people have named the pheasant Phil - that's exactly what we call 'ours'

Anyway, the best part is when you see the babies scooting around back there each summer, or walking down the street in a line.

It is pretty amazing how many wild animals there are in urban areas. I lived in the city most of my life, and I'd see deer running down our street, and big fat raccoons squeezing into the storm drains. They even caught a black bear about a mile from my old home. People saw it looking into the window of an office building. Here's one of my favorite the coyote that likes Quiznos.

I had one of those too. We called him our white trash neighbor, never fixed up the house, drunken people passed out on the lawn, big dog on a short leash in the backyard that was just dirt with a few weeds. The guy had no teeth by the time he was 40! Lovely people! :D :D :x

I love pheasants. They're beautiful birds. We have lots of geese, wild turkeys and sandhill cranes around where I live.

Those sand cranes have an awkward dance - kind of reminds me of Arnel's moves......

It probably was a coyote. We had them go through our back yard once when I lived at home with my folks. I got up terrified and told Daddy I thought it was a woman being strangled to death. He explained it was a pack of coyotes.

When I lived in Scottsdale - I was on the edge of the city, with reservation land to the immediate east and mountains to the northeast - but I definitely wasn't close enough to the mountains where this should have happened, but it did....

I lived in an apartment complex with over 100 units, four in each building - so about 25+ buildings... not exactly a small complex and was right along the highway and near a big shopping center... the night I was moving out of it, I go out onto the porch, and wandering on through the parking lot like they own the place were two very large javalina.

Currently, though I live in a big city, I live near several miles worth of wooded areas... so we get a lot of possums and raccoons - if I drive 5 minutes to the west, there are deer all over the place. I'm about a mile east of the woods, large residential area, so the deer aren't really going to wander in this far. But the damn ass raccoons do. And last week there was possum chillin' out maxin' relaxin' Fresh Prince style under my car.

True - Ok, well I thought creepy was all-encompassing in this context. LOL... I didn't know we were talking about different forms of creepy. I see Evie being more "wildly inappropriate" than creepy... ok, maybe a *little* creepy. But if he was being creepy in a predatory way, he'd be PMing and wouldn't be doing it openly... :lol .... well, unless he was just THAT dumb.  Maybe he just needs to learn a little respect. :?:
