Jon Bon Jovi and his band have become the first act to perform live on the roof of the O2 Arena in London

The musicians were helped by trained mountaineers to reach the top of the roof, which stands as high as Nelson's Column at 58 metres above the ground Photo: GETTY

The rock group kicked off their 12-date residency at the Greenwich venue with the rooftop performance, which was beamed live onto Peninsula Square's High Definition Screen for fans in front of the Arena.

The musicians were helped by trained mountaineers to reach the top of the roof, which stands as high as Nelson's Column at 58 metres above the ground.

Bon Jovi opened the O2 in 2007 and the band have now returned for their first residency at the venue. They will be supported on Tuesday night by The Side, an unsigned band from the Highlands who won a competition to appear on stage with the US rock group.

The frontman disclosed before the rooftop show on Monday that he dislikes being away from home because he misses his family.

"It's horrible when you are away touring, it's terrible - you are away from everyone and it can be for long periods, but so are travelling salesmen and soldiers," he told the Daily Mirror.

Bon Jovi has been married to his high-school sweetheart Dorothea for 20 years, and they have four children together.

Jon: "Hey guys, let's get high and go play on a roof!"

Richie: "I'll bring the beer."

They gotta flaunt it don't they?

They're just trying to be different. These guys are on Facebook every day, talking about the show they did last night or the show they have tonight. They are one of the most interactive bands out there right now. That's why they can put out a decade worth of mediocre albums but continue to garner the crowds and publicity. They revel in it.

I think it's cool. Heck I would do it too if I was in their shoes. Why grow up when you can be a rock star? At least they have a good excuse.

A rock and roll cover of Carole King's Up On The Roof would have been appropriate.

I completely agree with you here, "Don." WTF is "Don?" I am not gong to refer to you as "Don." To me, you are classic Gunbot and nothing else. It's as bad as an idea as releasing rerecords!

As for BJ, have you seen them recently, say in the last 5 years? I have and I can swear they mime the shit out of the catalog. Your take Gunbot?

I still think they are solid guys though, and good on them for interacting with the fanbase.

While theyre trying to come up with "cool" things to do , they have lost focus on the MAIN thing, THE MUSIC.
They keep making shitty songs and albums and like Dean said, lipping through their old stuff,,, They should fill out applications for the same nursing home as Leppard and Journey....

YUP
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
