Fuck no! Worlds would collide!!! I'm actually very hesitant about adding the MR folks with all of my other friends, because I'm probably just asking for trouble. I'm trying it out I guess to see how it works out. I'm scared...

Out of 110 people on my FB now, I only have 4 folks on there from here.. but fortunately they have proven they are at least semi-sane over time.

It's because for every 300 sign-ups, there are usually only 1-2 legit ones. If registration were to be turned back to open, there would be more spam posts than real posts, and that's saying something with you guys!

I know you're joking but maybe people are hesitant to join because this place is like a club/family and it's hard to just jump in. I've been here for a long time and I don't feel like I fit in :p

That, and maybe the forum is hard to find? A lot of people heard about MR and joined because of the whole Journey thing but now that BackTalk is gone and Journey's not doing much, maybe this site doesn't get as much mention on other Journey forums/sites.

What are you talking about Sarah? Of course you fit in here! As far as newbies go, if they can't handle this forum in it's current state... they really need to get out a box of crayons. This board used to be extremely hostile, but it's become much more laid back. I hope we get some new personalities in here, so if you're out there lurking... Jump in! There's nothing to be afraid of except Stevew2 on a weekend night...

:?

Seems like the only infusion of new blood we get around here lately is from the fall-out of other recently imploded forums like "Perryville" and whatever that thing was they had going on over at the GQ website following the the interviews with Perry and Schon.

So, until the next implosion...

I think Sarah hit the nail on the head with both the reasons she came up with. A couple of years ago there was a lot of controversy on this site and that attracted a lot of new traffic coming to see what the fuss was about. Since then things have calmed down to the extent that this forum doesn’t hit the radar outside of the pretty tight community here.

However, I also think the problem is that it IS a pretty tight community here. I check in this forum probably three or four times a week, but it is increasingly rare for me to see a thread that inspires me to jump in and get involved. I scan through the topics and maybe read in detail about 1 in 20 of them. The vast majority of threads seem to comprise a lot of in jokes and banter that newbies might feel intimidated by. Even the few serious threads usually degenerate into the same stream of one line quips and jokes. That isn’t a criticism as it’s what keeps the forum active, but it does make it difficult for newbies to dip their toe in the water.

This may be a bit of a leap in thinking, but it seems to me that the niche that internet forums used to fill (online social banter) has now been filled to a large extent by Facebook etc. As a result, all forums have suffered a hit in terms of new posters. If someone is reaching out for somewhere to ‘chat’ online and sees here exactly the same kind of activity that they can get on Facebook then they’ll probably stick to Facebook.

Where forums have a big advantage over social network sites is in their potential to explore topics in much greater depth, but as I said, most such discussions here get hijacked by jokes and lose focus on the original thread topic.

I’m really not trying to get you all to change. I’m just explaining why I don’t think you’ll get many new posters in here.

do you have to manually approve every sign-up? i'm guessing that some newbies may see a topic they want to respond to, but if they have to wait to be approved, they may not remember or bother to come back.

My posts say otherwise, but since the entire group of the 'Rant!' board has long since disappeared, I've since started posting here. You can count me as a newbie of sorts, at least for this board.

I agree with this. It's the same jokes over and over and over and over and over. Nothing wrong with joking around and all, I mean naturally we all do it, and we get carried away, but some dead horses do get beaten out damn fast. And I think newbies probably just don't care about that stuff when they're looking for something they can participate in.

And the other thing about threads degenerating is true too and we all know it, and have all had hands in it. Sometimes you actually do want to have an actual discussion, and you're lucky if you get 4 real replies before a friga joke, a gay sex joke or some inside joke that few people even get pops up and takes over. I'm not criticizing either, cuz, well, we all know I've done it too (well, maybe not the gay sex jokes... )

Hell, even THIS topic is repetative. We've had this one out more than a few times that I recall. So I guess the cycle continues... LOL... Viva La Friga!
