Question about allergic reactions

Postby TRAGChick » Wed Jun 09, 2010 12:41 pm

Hey, all....

I have a question about how a person's system reacts to allergic reactions....from what I've read in the past, we have a few people here in the Medical Profession....I, myself, am not....

Anyway, I have a question regarding how the body fights off an allergic reaction....I am VERY allergic to Poison Ivy - here's what I've written about how I react:
I wrote:In 2003, I was helping Mark move some trees that he and a bunch of guys cut down from our property....I had the logs balanced on my right shoulder, along the top of my arm bicep, and held onto the end of them with my right hand.

About 24 hours later, I felt all-of-a-sudden EXHAUSTED, chilled, and dizzy......I went to sleep early that night, thinking that I was tired from all the work.

Yeah, right

I woke up with POISON EFFING IVY on about 90% of my body

On top of that, I also have a "pins and needles" feeling on my arms and legs.....I fell asleep at 4:30 today and felt the pin/needle thing.

 Is this a "normal" reaction?

The pins and needles sensation is because your immune system is in overdrive at the moment. It's making you hypersensitive to everything. Your nerves are reacting to the influx of histamines in your body. Definitely get yourself to a doctor. I get the same type of reaction whenever I accidently touch something (don't know what it is) that comes over our fence from the neighbor's yard.

Damn Nora, I meant to say Steroids, not Antibiotics! I had to take a huge round of pills, AND use a steroid cream. It really sucked! I got it from shaving my dog. He runs through our woods all the time. Sorry... didn't mean to tell you personal stuff.

Yep - sounds like you had Prednisone.... that shit is awesome... will stop all that in about 18 hours. First 6 hours it reduces by about half. I don't know, to this day, what I reacted to, but it was BAD, worse than poison ivy or any of those. Red, itchy, swelling - a couple of weeks worth, would not go away. Calamine didn't work, I can't take benadryl, so that was not an option, hydrocortisone, nope did nothing. Every other product on the shelf, nope... useless.

But 20 mg of Pred, 3x on the first day - only 2 doses and it was almost all gone, but you have to finish the course.

Take it from he queen of allergic reactions, Nora.... Go to your doc or the closest urgent care clinic and demand Pred.
